National election races draw state donors
The Wisconsin presidential primary is not until Feb. 19, but hundreds of people have been voting with their checkbooks.
The latest campaign finance reports show Sen. Barack Obama led the presidential pack in 2007. Obama, D-Ill., finished the year with $558,120 from Badger State contributors.
Wisconsin favorite son Tommy Thompson took second place with $498,250. Thompson, a Republican and former longtime governor, left the race in August.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., was third with $180,583 followed by Republican Sen. John McCain with $179,799. McCain of Arizona topped all GOP presidential candidates in the state.
Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, who ended his quest for the Democratic nomination Wednesday, was fifth with $164,226.
Among the candidates still in the race, Texas Republican Ron Paul placed sixth with $157, 279; former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was seventh with $143,144; and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was 11th with $45,781.
Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who dropped out of the race Wednesday, was eighth with $136,825.
As of Dec. 31, Wisconsin contributors had given candidates a total of $2.3 million — $1.3 million to Republicans and $1 million to Democrats.
A major BLUE state has given more to Republicans than it has to the Dhimmicrats? Hmmmm… I know full well there were donations to Fred, but I don’t see him mentioned.
