Gates to ‘nag’ allies on Afghanistan

Gates has made no secret of his frustration with allies reluctant to send more troops and equipment to Afghanistan. Testifying at the Senate Wednesday, before his trip to the meeting in Vilnius, Gates warned that the issue threatens to break the nearly 60-year-old alliance apart.

“I worry a great deal about the alliance evolving into a two-tiered alliance in which you have some allies willing to fight and die to protect people’s security and others who are not,” Gates said.

They all whine when we do something, they all whine when we don’t. How ’bout they step up once in a while, eh?

Born-again Christians’ political loyalties shifting from GOP

“If the born-again constituency had not been as Republican in their voting as they were [in 2000 and 2004], he would not have won either election,” the pollster observes.

But Barna’s latest research on the issue has uncovered what he calls an “incredible shift.”

“If the election, nationally, were to be held today, what we would find is that 40 percent of born-again Christians who are likely to vote in November would choose the Democratic nominee for president, whoever that happens to be,” says Barna. “Only 29 percent say that they would side with the Republican nominee, whoever that happens to be.”

I see two reasons for this shift: First, the shift in the churches to preach the lefties agenda. Second, the lack of a REAL conservative as the GOP ‘frontrunner’. I might just be doing a write in, pending the outcome of the nominee. If there is no difference between the Democrat and the Republican candidates, seriously, what difference does it make who ya vote for?

Senate’s Stimulus Measure Blocked

Over two years, the Senate package would cost about $204 billion, about $40 billion more than the House bill’s two-year cost.

“Where’s that money coming from?” asked Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.). “Nobody can deny that we’re going to go to the markets, we’re going to borrow the money and there’s going to be very little payback. . . . Is there another way we can stimulate our economy without stealing from our kids?”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) called the package “a Christmas tree of legislative goodies that might not even get signed” by the president.

Handing out a LOT of money that doesn’t actually belong to them is NOT a ‘stimulus package’! They push the nation deeper in debt, and say, “if you don’t give granny an extra $2 a month, it’s your fault she’ll be tossed out in the street”! Feckless weasels, one and all! Wanna stimulate the economy? Make the tax cuts permanent and get the hell outta the way!

‘Anyone who violates our borders will get his legs broken’

Egypt’s foreign minister said that no further violations of its borders would be tolerated in the wake of a 12-day breach on its frontier with Gaza and said anyone daring to cross would have their legs broken, the state news agency reported.

Can we get this guy on OUR borders?

Councilman drafts resolution to seek refunds for towed voters

“We were perfectly legal,” said Dan Paris, owner of the towing outfit. “They parked in front of signs that clearly stated ‘private property, no parking.’ We’ve patrolled that lot every day for the past two years. This is not random.”

But it does seem suspicious, said Lynn Redmon, president of the nearby Norwood Homeowners Association. There was plenty of spillover parking in the vacant lot during a recent Knox County candidates’ forum at the Knoxville Expo Center adjacent to the former grocery store.

“Easily 150 cars or more in the Kroger lot that night,” Redmon said. “And no one was towed.”

I wonder if the cars that were towed had bumper stickers supporting their candidate?

Officer killed in LA standoff

A man barricaded himself in a house after telling police he had killed three relatives, then exchanged gunfire with a SWAT team, police said Thursday. One officer was killed and another wounded.

The standoff began at 9 p.m. Wednesday and continued into Thursday morning. The home where the man was holed up was surrounded by more than 200 officers.

Prayers with the families.

Democrats gird for next round; McCain asks calm

Democrats settled in for a long-haul delegate hunt after Super Tuesday while Republican John McCain approached a challenge that could be almost as daunting — appealing to hard-right conservatives who continue to reject his candidacy.

McFeingold has a real long record of whose side he is on…..it ain’t ours!

Murder charges for Kenya police

A Kenyan policeman is to be charged with murder after being filmed shooting at two men who were later found dead during election protests, police say.

The shooting in the western city of Kisumu shocked the country and led to an official enquiry.

Do they really believe this is the first to be shot by the police? It might be the first caught on tape, but I’m fairly certain it’s not the first time it’s happened.

Clerics Urge Afghan Government to Support Death Sentence Against Young Journalist

Sayed Parwez Kaambakhsh, 23, was sentenced to death on Jan. 22 by a three-judge panel in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif for handing out a report he printed off the Internet to fellow journalism students at Balkh University.

The article questioned why men can have four wives but women cannot have multiple husbands.

Yeah, I’d like to know the answer to that m’self. What’s good for the goose, is good for the gander! Guess it’s not prudent to ask logical questions in a Muslim country, eh?
