Gore kicks off $300M climate change campaign

Former Vice President Al Gore is starting a three-year $300 million publicity campaign to increase public awareness of climate change through ads in outlets like Men’s Health, Real Simple, Ebony, Scientific American, Wired, “American Idol” and “The Daily Show.”

The campaign is spearheaded by Gore’s group, the Alliance for Climate Protection, which is forming partnerships with groups like the Girls Scouts, the United Steelworkers union and the Audubon Society, hoping to mobilize some 10 million activists over the next three years.

Maybe the Boracle should have read this before he committed to waste money? Just think of how much good that $300 mil could do if given to charities, instead of being wasted on something that can NOT be controlled……the climate!

Obama Endorsed by Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar

Barack Obama has gained another superdelegate. Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar endorsed her Illinois colleague Sunday night, saying in a statement that Obama “has inspired an enthusiasm and idealism that we have not seen in this country in a long time.”

It is the latest development among many that have been putting Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign on its heels. On Monday, Obama was poised to receive the endorsement of the seven Democrats on North Carolina’s congressional delegation, The Wall Street Journal reported.

I am just flabbergasted that so many ….what should be…. reasonably intelligent people, are buying into all his pretty slogans and empty promises. Ooops…my bad! These are Dhimmis we’re talking about here….never mind….thinking ability doesn’t enter into the equation. Baaaaa!

Dallas Cowboys stadium naming rights may top record deal

The Dallas Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones may have a title before they even kick off in their new stadium – the holder of the biggest naming rights deal in sports history.

The only thing that dadburn stadium should be named is something to do with the Cowboys…..not some corporation! This really chaps my hide! It SHOULD be called Landry Stadium! But then, they aren’t giving me a say, cuz I don’t have millions…or billions to buy ‘em off! Feckless weasels!

Excavation work begins at Stonehenge

The first excavation at Stonehenge in 44 years has begun today.

Archaeologists hope the historic dig will unravel the ancient mystery of the stones.

A trench is being excavated at the World Heritage site in a bid to establish the precise dating of the Double Bluestone Circle, the first stone structure that was built there thousands of years ago.

Timothy Darvill and Geoffrey Wainwright, the professors leading the first dig inside the stone circle in 44 years, believe their project could answer the “eternal questions” of when and why Stonehenge was first built.

Cool! But ya know, no matter how much digging is done at a site, there will always be questions, because we can’t get into the minds of those who lived back when. We can try, but we just can’t do it, I don’t care how well ‘educated’ you are. And that might be the problem. Can you imagine, a couple of thousand years from now, someone digging up a disco ball? Heh. Who made it, why, what was it used for? No doubt those far in the future archaeologists will attribute it to some moon worship or something. Heh.

Mashaal offers to stop civilian attacks

Hamas has offered Israel a deal to only attack military targets, the group’s Damascus-based leader Khaled Mashaal said.

In an interview with Sky News broadcast Monday, Mashaal said the offer was identical to one made to Israel 10 years ago.

“We renew our offer to Israel to let the civilians on both sides not be a part of this conflict,” he said. “We renew this offer today.”

Mashaal asserted that if the IDF refrained from killing any Palestinian civilians, Hamas would only carry out attacks against Israeli military targets

Words. And empty words at that! The bad guys USE civilians as shields, so that would mean that the IDF couldn’t target anyone!

Mashaal went on to confirm that captured IDF soldier Gilad Schalit was alive.

Good, then let him go home! He did nothing but his job as a soldier.

Widow says ‘I feel more at peace now’

Almost 20 years after his death, the Department of Veterans Affairs has recognized that an area Army veteran had a valid claim to service-related disability benefits.
(…)
Her husband, a Gibson County native, fought in Vietnam and Cambodia and had began filing paperwork with the Veterans Administration in 1987 to get benefits after he became ill. He died at age 40 on Dec. 5, 1988, after The American Legion Magazine had featured him in a story about Vietnam veterans’ filing for disability.

Grimes said her husband always believed his declining health and a rare lymphoma cancer were results of his exposure to the chemical defoliant Agent Orange during combat in the jungles of Cambodia in 1970.

“He was in infantry. They all walked in on the ground right after it was sprayed,” she said.

On his death bed, he asked his wife to continue fighting for the recognition. “He said, ‘Do not give up on this.’”

TWENTY YEARS?? TWENTY FREAKIN’ YEARS?? Way to go VA, you’ve done yourself proud! (insert MASSIVE disgusted sarcasm here)

Political scientist calls pro-life senator’s endorsement of Obama a betrayal of faith

“This Casey endorsement of Obama is really a total betrayal. I know this sounds harsh, but this is a total betrayal of his and his father’s pro-life Catholic convictions,” he criticizes. “Barack Obama might be a kind and gentle guy, a good speaker, seems like a nice person, affable. But on abortion, he is an extremist. Amazingly enough, he’s actually to the left of Hillary Clinton on abortion.”

Kengor notes that Casey Sr. has a history of disagreement with Bill and Hillary Clinton, much of which stems from the abortion issue. “It was back at the 1992 Democratic Convention, which was the Clinton convention that Bob Casey, Sr. – then the Democratic governor of Pennsylvania – was barred from addressing…,” he reiterates. “[H]e wanted to give voice to the pro-life cause, and that created some very bad blood between Casey and the Clintons.”

It’s a lot more than just the abortion issue that’s a betrayal of Christian faith!

Isaiah 53:5-6

5  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

6  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Father of U.S. Soldier Missing in Iraq Since 2004 Says His Remains Were Found

1_61_040907_mattmaupin.jpg

The father of a soldier listed as missing-captured in Iraq since 2004 says the military has informed him that his son’s remains were found in Iraq.

Keith Maupin says an Army general told him Sunday that DNA was used to identify the remains of his son, Sgt. Keith Matthew Maupin, who went by “Matt.”

Matt Maupin was a 20-year-old private first class when he was captured April 9, 2004, after his fuel convoy was ambushed west of Baghdad.

Arab television network Al-Jazeera aired a videotape a week later showing Maupin sitting on the floor surrounded by five masked men holding automatic rifles.

That June, Al-Jazeera aired another tape purporting to show a U.S. soldier being shot. But the dark and grainy tape showed only the back of the victim’s head and not the actual shooting.

Update:  The Patriot Guards WILL be there to welcome home Sgt. Maupin!  (H/T: Rustmeister’s Alehouse)

Memphis advances to Final Four with 85 - 67 win over Texas

It’s nice to win 102 games in three years.

But victory No. 103 for the Memphis Tigers was the best. . .so far.

The Tigers, 37-1, roared to third Final Four appearance ever and first since 1985, leading Texas beginning to end in a dominating 85-67 NCAA South Regional championship game victory.

After losing in regional finals to Ohio State last year and UCLA in 2006, the Tigers’ smothering defense hooked ’the Horns early, quieting the pro-Texas crowd that made up a large portion of the Reliant Stadium crowd of 32,798.

The Tigers will play West champion UCLA on Saturday in one of two Final Four semifinals games in San Antonio’s Alamodome.

Way to go Memphis!  March on!

Study: Cell Phones Could Be More Dangerous Than Cigarettes

According to the U.K.’s Independent newspaper, the study, headed by Dr. Vini Khurana, shows that there is a growing body of evidence that using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer.

Khurana — one of the world’s top neurosurgeons — based his assessment on the fact that three billion people now use the phones worldwide. That is three times higher than people who smoke. Smoking kills some five million globally each year.

He warned that people should avoid using handsets whenever possible and called on the phone industry to make them safer. France and Germany have already warned against the use of mobile phones, especially by children, it is reported.

The study is said to be the most damning indictment of cell phone use. According to the Independent, cancers take at least 10 years to develop, which has influenced earlier cancer studies showing relative safety when using cell phones.

Now, all you arrogant, self righteous SOBs, yakking on your cellphones, talking loud in the stores, in restaurants, etc., disturbing my well being……LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE!

At approximately 8 p.m. last night, I turned on every single light in the house, including all lamps, and even the outdoor lights.  I hope that helped the folks in Sydney find their way!

I did go around and turn them off at 9.

Morning Coffee 03/30/08 - Afternoon Edition

Muqtada Sadr orders followers to end fighting

Radical Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada Sadr ordered his followers today to end six days of fighting, which has killed more than 300 people and threaten to reverse recent security gains across Iraq.

In a statement issued by Sadr’s headquarters in the Shiite holy city of Najaf, the cleric disavowed any armed members who attack government institutions and party offices.

“Based on the responsibility imposed by Islamic law and to save precious Iraqi blood . . . we have decided the following: to end the armed manifestation in Basra and all over the governorates,” Sadr said.

In return, the cleric demanded that the government stop what he described as random raids and release all prisoners who have not been proved guilty of offenses.

First off, if he was so worried about Iraqi blood being spilled, why did he start this in the first place. Second, demanding that prisoners be released who, evidently, haven’t even been tried yet, is not such a good idea. My thought….they are just addicted to violence.

Obama says Clinton should keep running

Sen. Barack Obama refused yesterday to go along with other Democrats who are calling for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to step away from the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

“My attitude is Senator Clinton can run as long as she wants,” Mr. Obama said.

I agree! Besides, like I said yesterday, it’s just way too much fun watching the battle!

More than 1,000 Tiger fans show their support at pre-game rally in Houston

To the strains of songs such as “Walking in Memphis” and “Eye of the Tiger,” more than 1,000 University of Memphis fans crowded into a pregame pep rally today to hear confident predictions of a win over Texas in this afternoon’s South regional final of the NCAA men’s basketball tourney.

“I guarantee you the team doesn’t care where we’re playing. They don’t care how many (Texas) fans there are,” said U of M athletic director R.C. Johnson. “We’re going to go out there and get ‘em.”

There are already too many in Houston! :) Anyway, I wish them luck!

Bibi: Concessions will strengthen Hamas

There is no appropriate substitute for Israeli control in the West Bank which do not put Israel in danger, Opposition Leader Binyamin Netanyahu said Sunday.

After meeting with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Netanyahu said “No one, not even Abu Mazen [Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas] can do our work in the West Bank. If the IDF leaves - Hamas and Iran will go in.”

Netanyahu added that the Likud party will not agree to any agreement with the Palestinians which will include the division of Jerusalem.

Agreed! Tell me again why they voted him out of office? Israel needs a strong guy like this, instead of the wimp they’ve got right now as P.M.

Cities pay huge salaries despite fiscal crises

A city nurse earned $350,000. A fire department battalion chief pulled in more than twice as much as the mayor. And a municipal park ranger took home $188,000 in overtime on top of his $71,000 salary.

Such generous payouts were criticized for hastening the fiscal downfall of the city of Vallejo, which narrowly averted bankruptcy this month. But the nurse, firefighter and ranger aren’t from Vallejo - they’re among hundreds of top earners working for the cities of San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland.

Dayyum! Talk about feeding off the public trough! These are the types who insists that YOU don’t pay enough in taxes. Pfft! Their salaries depend on the people who pay them, and I’d say they’ve taken FULL advantage.

US embassy sacks 90 Turkish workers

The American Embassy in Ankara has fired 90 Turkish workers.

The embassy sacked 30 workers on Thursday and 60 on Friday.

That’s it? That’s all they say about it? With those two sentence, it makes it sound like the U.S. Embassy has no reason to fire the workers. There’s got to be more behind the story besides that!

Three Children Found Dead at Hotel

ABC 2 News has just learned that the bodies of three children, who appear to have been murdered, have been found at the Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor Hotel.

Shortly after 1 p.m. hotel security received a call from a man staying at the hotel claiming he was going to hurt himself.

Hotel security, along with Baltimore City Police, went up to the room. That’s when they found the three children.

Police and investigators are still trying to gather information. Right now, they say they are not sure who this man is, if he and his family are from Baltimore, or how the children died.

The father was taken to a nearby hospital for minor self-inflicted cuts.

Speculation could run rampant with so little information. The way it looks to me, the man, father or not, did harm to 3 children. I this is the case, I honestly hope the man rots in what hell he ends up in.

Dith Pran, ‘Killing Fields’ photographer, dies at 65

Dith Pran, a photojournalist for The New York Times whose gruesome ordeal in the killing fields of Cambodia was re-created in a 1984 movie that gave him an eminence he tenaciously used to press for his people’s rights, died in New Brunswick, New Jersey on Sunday. He was 65 and lived in Woodbridge, New Jersey

Rest in peace sir. You’ve earned it!

New law stiffens drunken-driving penalties

Repeat drunken drivers could face harsher penalties under a new law in Wisconsin, but advocates worry it won’t address the state’s standing as the “drinking Mecca of the nation.”

People convicted of operating a vehicle while under the influence seven, eight or nine times could face a fine of up to $25,000 and 10 years in prison, under the law signed March 18. Ten or more convictions could increase the prison sentence to 12½ years.

“That’s somebody who’s chronically violating our laws and is a danger on our roads,” said state Rep. Tony Staskunas, D-West Allis, who co-sponsored the bill.

Well, it’s about flippin’ time! Wisconsin is always full of news about a drunk driver getting busted for the 7th or 10th time!
