Memphis presidential candidate withdraws

Memphis’ only presidential candidate threw in the towel this morning, but did not end his single-issue crusade to increase the number of organ donations.

“My hope for a deadlock at the Republican Convention is out the window,” David F. Diamond said in an email message. “Clearly John McCain will be the GOP nominee. Recognizing reality at this point in the 2008 presidential campaign, I am withdrawing from the race. John McCain is a good man and I will support him enthusiastically.”

Diamond, 76, a radio personality for years in Memphis, has championed the effort to get laws changed to create an incentive for people to donate vital organs at the time of their death in an effort to end the organ shortage.

In an interview, Diamond said he was never able to get on the ballot in part because he raised “not quite $200″ to support his campaign.

Now, call me ignorant, but I’ve never even heard of this guy.  As for his issue….well, if people don’t want to donate their organs, should that be THEIR choice?  I mean, seriously, if you have personal reasons for not donating what you came into the world with, why on earth should that be a political issue?
