Gay-marriage ruling splits faith leaders

Nowhere is the opinion divide on gay marriage sharper than in the nation’s religious communities. And last week’s same-sex marriage ruling will do little to bring agreement on the definition of marriage, a social and religious touchstone that has torn apart families, congregations and entire dioceses.

I guess those being “torn apart” aren’t basing their sermons on the Book that gave them the job in the first place.

Bush Presses Arab Leaders on Reform (Slimes version)

After a showy celebration of America’s close ties with Israel, President Bush presented Arab leaders with a lengthy to-do list on Sunday, telling them that if Middle East peace is to become a reality, they must expand their economies, offer equal opportunity to women and embrace democracy.

“Too often in the Middle East, politics has consisted of one leader in power and the opposition in jail,” Mr. Bush said in an address to the World Economic Forum here, adding, “The time has come for nations across the Middle East to abandon these practices, and treat their people with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

Bush Urges Mideast Leaders to Advance Democracy (Fox version)

Israel got glowing praise from U.S. President George W. Bush earlier this week, while on Sunday, the Arab world got a stern lecture on the need to spread freedoms and isolate state sponsors of terror that he said are holding the region back.

“Too often in the Middle East, politics has consisted of one leader in power and the opposition in jail,” Bush said in remarks prepared for delivery before the World Economic Forum on the Middle East. “The time has come for nations across the Middle East to abandon these practices, and treat their people with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

Interesting how that same story gets reported in two different publications. The very first paragraph speaks volumes. How ’bout I Just hold my breath till I turn blue?

Grads say lowering GPA for HOPE scholarships would be mistake

Although the lowered standards have wide support from lawmakers, the students who kept the HOPE scholarship say lowering the GPA requirement would be a mistake — even if it might benefit their former classmates.

“Oh, no, they don’t need to do that,” said Courtney Helton, who graduated this month with a degree in mass communication from Trevecca Nazarene University with a 3.7 GPA. “I don’t think it’s very difficult to get a 3.0 unless you totally disregard everything.”

Another REALLY dumb (literally) idea comes out of Nashville! Why do they think kids are graduating from high school and they can’t read, or do simple math? Lowering standards has been the bain of our education system (that and unions). Lowering expectations gets lowered standards, and less than desirable results!

‘Agreement of principles by August 2008′

Although the discouraging pace of peace talks has led many to doubt the feasibility of US President George W. Bush’s goal that a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians could be realized by 2009, Palestinian Authority officials seemed optimistic on Sunday, telling the London-based newspaper, Al-Hayat that an agreement of principles between the two sides would likely be signed by August, 2008.

Someone needs a serious dose of reality. It didn’t happen in the 70s. It didn’t happen in the 80s. I damn sure didn’t happen in th 90s. So what makes anyone think it’ll happen in the 00s? As long as Israel exists and is doing well, there won’t be any peace with people who want to destroy her.

United Nations Will Investigate America for Racism

As an African American politician is set to assume for the first time in the country’s history the leadership of a major political party, a Geneva-based United Nations human rights investigator plans to come here next week to investigate whether racism plays a role in the presidential campaign, according to a statement released yesterday.

Dallas area minister resigns in wake of sex sting arrest

The Rev. Jack Graham, pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church, said during services Saturday that the church accepted Joe Barron’s resignation, effective immediately.

Barron was charged Friday with online solicitation of a minor. Undercover officers posing as a 13-year-old girl communicated with the 52-year-old minister for about two weeks. The online conversations were sexual in nature, police said.

What the hell is the matter with these people?????

US military says soldier shot at Quran

Iraqi police found the bullet-riddled Quran with graffiti inside the cover on a small-arms range near a police station in Radwaniyah, a former insurgent stronghold west of Baghdad, U.S. military spokesman Col. Bill Buckner said.

American commanders then launched an inquiry that led to disciplinary action against the soldier, who has been removed from Iraq, Buckner said.

I realize we should have respect for other people faith, and holy books, but after what those followers of Islam have done in recent years, I can’t say I blame the soldier. Frustration can lead to stupid acts. They’d get a “Gee, sorry ’bout that” and that’s it. Maybe I’ve become a bit…ummm….jaded?
