An Ol' Broad's Ramblings
Archive for 9 July 2008
Last Friday, on the Fourth of July, the great American patriot Jesse Helms passed away. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson also went to their great reward on Independence Day, so this is further proof of God.
Helms is now the second great American patriot I’ve always wanted to meet and never will, at least in this lifetime. The only other one is the magnificent Reagan aide Lyn Nofziger. (Wikipedia quote: “I sometimes lie awake at night trying to think of something funny that Richard Nixon said.”)
After a week of hundreds of Helms obituaries — one or two of which were not completely dishonest — I will mention just a few items that were not addressed or given sufficient attention.
We are definitely in the south. The Mr and I are watching the news and there was a clip of storm damage in Hughes, AR. Well, it’s no wonder that people around the country think folks in the south are Gumps.
Now, I have all the sympathy in the world for the poor man who lost him home, and am thankful they weren’t injured, but I honestly did NOT want to see his boobies on the news! Yep, I said boobies! The man had on overalls, biballs, whatever ya wanna call ‘em, and no shirt. Boobs hangin’ out the sides.
I’m gonna have nightmares for weeks!
A 45-year-old man charged with attacking a woman and her son last week was convicted of murder and armed robbery almost 20 years ago, authorities said Tuesday.
A POS was CONVICTED of murder, and was running around free, on the streets? Uh, I was under the impression that murderers were criminals, and were supposed to be behind bars….or dead dead dead!
Ernest Charles Stevenson appeared before Judge Blake Anderson in Jackson City Court on Tuesday morning. He was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault and aggravated robbery in the July 2 attack on Pamela Castleman and her 18-year-old son, Clayton Lee Castleman Jr.
Now, I know there are a bunch of people who don’t think the execution of such people is a deterrent. Well, lemme tell you types….if he had been sentenced to death, he sure as hell wouldn’t have been still kickin’, out free to do more harm.
According to prosecutor Ben Mayo, Stevenson was convicted of murder and armed robbery in 1989 in Chicago. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison, but was released in October.
Court records and law enforcement authorities said that on Nov. 10, 1987, Stevenson robbed 51-year-old Leroy Davis and beat Davis to death with a board outside a Chicago liquor store.
Accidentally killing someone is one thing. He wasn’t convicted for accidentally killing Mr. Davis. This blight on humanity beat the man to death with a board! WHY was he out on the streets? WHY was he not still behind bars?
Mayo told Anderson that Stevenson also had faced a rape charge earlier this year. According to the Madison County General Sessions Court Clerk’s office, a grand jury returned a “no bill” on the indictment for that case.
Anderson said that after hearing about Stevenson’s criminal history, he set Stevenson’s bond at $500,000 because “he is a threat to public safety.”
Gee, ya think? And they didn’t know this prior to letting the garbage spill out? I’m at the point if some bureaucrat decides to let such….beings….back on the street, and he/she commits another crime against another person, then the bureaucrat should pay the SAME price as the thug.
….from Stop the ACLU
OK, I am wondering here if the hanging of a black Southerner by the KKK in the American south would be reported by the Chicago Tribune in the same kind of vague language of “cultural” murder as a recent Muslim murder in Georgia was treated? More likely, of course, the story would be immediately pegged to the racist, white motives that actually led to the murder. In essence that is how the Chicago Tribune mishandled their reporting of another so-called Islamic “honor killing” that occurred in Georgia this week.
Unless Obama does a last minute flip-flop (again), he is set to break the hearts of his far left support base:
The Senate is finally expected to wrap up the bill updating the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act today, which includes the controversial provision of retroactive immunity for telecom companies facing lawsuit. While the bill splits Democrats, it’s expected to pass with united Republican support.
Obama will be back for today’s vote and has said he’ll support final passage.
Amanda Simon explains the disappointment at the ACLU Blog.
After the amendments were effectively killed – along with any possible hope of court review of the president’s illegal and unconstitutional domestic spying program (can’t say that enough) – the votes for final passage were counted.
The votes were cast and so was the dye. Final count: 69 to 28.
I can only say it’s been emotional. This isn’t the last you’ll be hearing from the ACLU on this subject — in fact, far from it. Keep an eye on this space for our continued and tireless work protecting the Fourth Amendment (and all the other ones, too, come to think of it).
Don’t ya just love it when the lefties, communists, etc…..wait…I’m repeating myself…. have “issues”.
When a judge decided during pretrial motions that documents describing confidential Scientology beliefs should be put in a file open to the public, 1,500 Scientologists swamped the court clerk’s office to keep anyone else from requesting them. The next day, the judge resealed those records. But an L.A. Times reporter managed to get past the crush of Scientologists and copy the file. Newspapers around the country had a field day with what the Times reported: the documents showed that high-level Scientologists are taught that each human contains the souls of alien creatures banished to Earth 75 million years ago by a galactic overlord named Xenu.
Thanks to David Hallstrom for sharing this!
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama lamented legislative pushes to make English the official language of the United States and said Americans should instead focus on making sure their children learn Spanish at a recent campaign stop.
“I don’t understand when people are going around worrying about, we need to have English only. They want to pass a law, we just, we want English only,” Obama told supporters in Powder Springs, Georgia on Tuesday. “Now, I agree that immigrants should learn English, I agree with this. But understand this, instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English, they’ll learn English, you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish.”
Excuse me? The likelihood of my “child” going to live in a foreign land, especially a SPANISH speaking one, are slim to NONE! May I ask why, pray tell, why she should have to learn Spanish?
At a Democratic primary debate Obama said he voted against it because “This is the kind of question that is designed precisely to divide us,” he said. He also called the issue a “distraction” a word he commonly uses to describe controversial issues. Obama remarked, “When we get distracted by those kinds of questions, I think we do a disservice to the American people.”
No, you ignorant feckless weasel, a common language would UNITE us. What you, and your lackeys want, is that great division.
Honestly, I don’t give a flying flip what you speak at home. However, when you are living here, out working in the real world, you damn sure better be able to speak the language of the land. In this case, that would be ENGLISH!
I’ve had relatives who didn’t speak English, I didn’t expect them to. They didn’t come here to live, just visit. (Skill in charades comes in real handy.) I lived in Thailand for a bit. I learned to speak a smidge of Thai. If I had lived there any longer, I would be expected to be almost fluent. That’s what people do.
We have people coming into this country from south of the border, some legally, a good chunk – illegally, who NEVER bother to learn the language. I remember reading a news story about a woman who had lived here a large portion of her life, finally becoming a citizen. Peachy. The problem? SHE NEVER BOTHERED TO LEARN TO SPEAK ENGLISH!
When the Mr and I use to travel to Mexico on vacation, we both knew enough Spanish to get by, shopping being the main activity. Since our intension is to NEVER return to that country until boundaries can be set, I don’t think this will be an issue in the future.
B. Hussein, and his ilk, will eventually divide this country so much, that one day, Spanish may become our official language. This must be stopped! NOW!
I came across this last night at The Thirst for Freedom, and would like to get some of your thoughts on the subject.
Did the Chinese military cause the largest blackout in the history of North America?
That is the assertion of Tim Bennett, the former president of the Cyber Security Industry Alliance, who says U.S. intelligence officials confirmed to him the People’s Liberation Army gained access to a network that controlled electric power systems serving the northeastern U.S. in 2003.
Some 50 million people were affected by the 9,300-square-mile blackout that hit parts of New York, Canada, Michigan and Ohio.
The official explanation for the power outage was that overgrown trees came into contact with strained high-voltage lines in Ohio. But the story of this possible skirmish in the “electromagnetic spectrum” is widely whispered about in defense and intelligence circles. It is referred to by some as the first battle of World War III – a conflict to be fought asymmetrically in cyberspace and with weapons that might seem like science fiction.
The Moscow newspaper Zavtra reported only a week ago that Russia has developed “special powerful electromagnetic impulse generators that may be used in design of new type radars and as a basis of electromagnetic weapons that will render enemy electronics inoperable.”
I’ll be the first to admit, when it comes to this kind of technology, I’m MORE than dumb as a box of rocks. You plug it in, flip the switch, and it’s suppose to work. If the bulb burns out, you change it, flip the switch….all better.
What is being discussed here is way beyond my comprehension. Yes, I understand a bit about EMP, but only what I’ve read. How it’s done, I’m clueless.
The roughly 1,200 mile range of Iran’s Shahab-3 rocket has been known for several years, but the test firing — and pointed statements from Tehran about the country’s “capability in hitting its enemies” — added to a tense climate.
Iran “only furthers the isolation of the Iranian people from the international community when it engages in this sort of activity,” White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said at the meeting of the Group of Eight industrialized nations. He said Iran’s missiles violate existing United Nations resolutions, and “They should . . . refrain from further missile tests if they truly seek to gain the trust of the world.”
Y’all might want to start stocking up on necessary items, just in case. If they want to live by 12th century rules, we might want to grant their wish, before the rattling saber hits the ground.
City police said Courtni Lee Nichols of Palmyra left her baby in her car, parked at a restaurant while she went next door to the Yes Deer Lounge.
Police were called late Tuesday afternoon about an unresponsive child.
Sergeant Cheryl Anderson said the baby was taken to Gateway Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police have charged Nichols, who is 24, with first-degree murder.
Her punishment? The bitch should be left in a hot car until SHE bakes like a freakin’ Christmas turkey!
Many more obese children, including some as young as eight, should receive cholesterol-lowering drugs, say leading US doctors.
Children in the UK with a rare gene fault can get statins, but the American Academy of Pediatrics is going further.
It wants to see the drugs used in thousands more children with high cholesterol levels, despite little information about long-term safety.
A UK specialist said he did not support widespread statin use for children.
Thank you “fun police”. Not only can our children not play like kids anymore, y’all have turned them into fat lazy slobs on drugs. In your concern that someone “MIGHT get hurt”, you pretty much slapped a death sentence on them. Way to go asswipes!
Defense attorneys grilled the agent who headed an immigration raid of a Houston rag exporting business, challenging the bias and quality of information provided by undocumented plant workers, including three who earned more than $13,200 as informants.
”Wow,” remarked attorney Matt Alford , who represents ex-employee Cirila Barron. ”I might get out of the law business and get into the informant business.”
Alford made the remarks after Special Agent Calvin Bradford, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, testified how one undocumented informant who worked at Action Rags USA for three days was paid $1,200 for information. Another, who worked for three months, earned $10,000, and a third was paid $2,000.
First thought: Someone actually exports rags? Second thought: Why the hell are ILLEGAL ALIENS being paid such princely sums? $1200 for “working” 3 days?
“We are dealing with a sovereign government,” Mr. Scheunemann said. “If that sovereign government asks us to leave, we will leave. And if that sovereign government wants to continue to work cooperatively with us until they are able to provide their own security, we will stay. What we will not do is set an arbitrary timeline to withdraw irregardless of conditions on the ground or agreement with the sovereign Iraqi government.”
The Obama campaign earlier in the day criticized Senator McCain for declining to accept a timetable for withdrawal. A senior foreign policy adviser to the campaign, Susan Rice, said in a statement: “It’s time for John McCain to explain why he refuses to ask Iraq’s leaders to take responsibility for their own future, and why he has completely changed his own stated position that he would leave Iraq when the Iraqis ask us to. The American people need a strategy for succeeding in Iraq, not just a strategy for staying, and John McCain’s stubborn refusal to adjust to events on the ground just shows that he has no plan to end this war.”
It’s one thing to accept a “time line” set by the government of Iraq. It’s a completely different thing to push a “time line” of leftist anti American PINKos.
“Our assistance may change in organization and size over the coming months or years, but some form of partnership and assistance, consistent with strategic objectives, is still necessary,” he wrote. “The Iraqis know this; we should remember it too.”
When he testified before Congress in January, Dubik said Iraq was on track to reach some 580,000 security force members by the end of the year but that the forces still were a long-way from becoming self-sufficient. Iraqi officials estimated to him that the country probably wouldn’t be able to assume responsibility for internal security until sometime between 2009 and 2012 or defend its borders before 2018, he said.
Perhaps if the Iraqis started arresting and prosecuting their corrupt officials, things might move along a little faster. Oh, wait a minute….then they’d probably have NO governing bodies at all. Never mind.
Wayne Hyatt thought it must have been an armadillo or perhaps a raccoon he vaguely heard overnight in his Collierville yard.
On Tuesday morning, through the glass panes of a patio door, he was startled to see a white-and-brown goat with horns. Her name was Minerva.
“You know how people break in your house and steal things?” Hyatt said. “This was somebody breaking in and leaving something.”
The stealthy goat-giver planned well.
Somebody has too much time on their hands.
Both suspects confessed during their interrogations to having established contacts with Global Jihad elements throughout the Islamic world and assisting them in locating targets for potential terror attacks within Israel.
Security officials said that Taher Abu Sakhut – the primary suspect – allegedly began entering websites affiliated with al Qaida and Global Jihad and which called for Israel’s destruction in 2006 soon after becoming a religiously-observant Muslim. At the same time, he also became associated with the Islamic Movement in Rahat, the largest Bedouin town in the South.
Through these contacts, Tahar agreed to join al Qaida and transferred the group information on IDF bases, strategic installations throughout Israel and other crowded places, such as the Azrieli Towers in Tel Aviv and Ben-Gurion International Airport, that could be targets in attacks.
I could say something here about making Islam illegal, but I’ll refrain.
Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is so high style and profile that he’s prime pickings for a high-tech hoaxster, defense lawyers argue in legal papers trying to bar potentially explosive text messages from court.
The allegedly incriminating messages could be the work of a hacker typing away on a computer — perhaps even creating a titillating back-and-forth between Kilpatrick and his former aide Christine Beatty, the lawyers said.
The legal team has asserted that prosecutors cannot authenticate the text messages they’ve used to build perjury, conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges against Kilpatrick and Beatty. Without the messages, they said, the criminal case will fall apart.
That’s their defense strategy? Well, I suppose in these days of high tech, anything is possible. Personal opinion, I think he’s just that arrogant.
“There’s nothing to stop [the cut] unless the Republican senators give us one more vote, and we’d like to know where John McCain is on the issue,” said Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, a national co-chairman of fellow Illinois Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.
The stalemate has prompted doctors’ groups to launch blistering attacks against Republicans who supported the filibuster. The bill would prevent a 10.6 percent cut in payment rates for doctors who operate under Medicare, and would be paid for by cuts to private plans known as Medicare Advantage, a central point of contention.
The gubmint created a big mess, and they are going to slap the blame on one person? Gimme a flippin’ break!
“On the supply side, oil and production refining capacity need to be increased,” Bush said. “On the demand side, we agreed to take new steps to increase energy efficiency, and we agreed that fuel subsidies that artificially inflate demand should be eliminated or reduced.”
Bush made the comments one day after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) sent a letter to the president, urging him to “use your authority as President to draw down a small portion of the oil held in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in order to expand available supplies and help reduce the record prices that are helping push the economy toward recession.”
Pelosi noted that oil prices have increased from less than $30 a barrel to a record high of nearly $150 a barrel “since your administration took office.”
Republicans note that oil prices have more than doubled since Pelosi herself took over the speaker’s office, promising that “Democrats have a plan to lower gas prices…”
On the contrary, oil and gasoline prices have soared 75 percent since Democrats took control of Congress, Republican leaders say. They call it the “Pelosi premium.”
I don’t know why I’m continuously amazed by the Queen Moonbat’s ignorance and arrogance. Perhaps somewhere, in the back of my mind, I EXPECT a so called “leader” to be a little brighter?
9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.
10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
