An Ol’ Broad’s Ramblings

A New Experience

Well, today, the Mr and I went our very first wedding in Tennessee. Lemme tell ya, it was quite an adventure. A young couple from my church invited the whole church to attend, which was very nice of them. We thought we’d go, just to show support.

They didn’t hold it at our church because the bride wanted to walk down the middle aisle. We don’t have a middle aisle. She wanted to walk through the doors to head down the middle aisle. Even if we had rearranged the chairs to create a middle aisle, we don’t have a middle door. We’ve got one on either side, which goes quite well with the two aisles. They decided to hold the ceremony at the Pentecostal church. Since neither one of them are Pentecostal, I’m not sure how they swung that, but there we all were, waiting for the ceremony to begin.

A few observations:

Everyone from our church who attended where dressed like they were going to a wedding ceremony in a church. Since we are a rather small church, I knew who is and isn’t a regular attendee. Ladies were in skirts, or dresses, gentlemen were in dress pants and nice shirts.

Those who I had never seen before were wearing what looked to be work pants, blue jeans and tshirts, etc. This of course told me that they weren’t members of the church where the ceremony was being held. The lady Pentecostals around here do NOT wear pants of any sort, much less jeans. The majority have extremely long hair that they wear in rather interesting styles.

Hmmm…. well, ok, each to their own, I guess. Perhaps I’m a smidge of a snob when I say, if you are going to attend a wedding or funeral, why is it so difficult to dress appropriately?

The reception was held in the attached hall. Hint: If you want to fit a large number of people into a less than large reception hall, do not have round tables. Your average round table seats 8 people. Cramming 20+ round tables into an area that would only comfortably fit 10, 15 max, well, you have a serious sardine effect. Not to mention that many of the people who strolled in after only half of those who had been in the church were in the hall, had no where to sit. Sadly, the people who came in later where people we knew. Unfortunately, after standing at the door for a little while, they turned and left.

I thought perhaps they were just waiting outside, but alas, when we went out to chat with them, most had left, and we watched the last car pulling out of the of people we knew. Considering the temperature was about 190 degrees, I should have known better. :? We started to leave, but the grooms mother insisted we stay and eat, so we did.

Now, I’ve lived in the south the majority of my life, but there were some things on that buffet table I had never seen. I can’t tell you what it was cuz I have NO idea. One seemed to be a corn chip salad. It was actually kind of tasty, but unusual. Another was a fried something or other that I never could put my finger on. The Mr liked it. Me, not so much.

I was always under the impression that southern gentlemen always took their hats off in at least a church setting. Guess not.

All in all, it was a reasonably  nice time. The bride was beautiful, the groom handsome, and babies were burping up whatever it is that babies burp.

Lovely ceremony, and our pastor did himself proud!
