Morgan Freeman In Accident
Actor Morgan Freeman suffers broken arm, other injuries in Mississippi car wreck
Memphis-born actor Morgan Freeman was injured in a serious car accident in Mississippi shortly before midnight Sunday night and airlifted to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.
The actor, 71, was in serious condition this morning at The Med, said hospital spokeswoman Kathy Stringer.
Bill Luckett, a business partner of Freeman’s in the Ground Zero Blues Club chain, said Freeman suffered a broken arm and some other injuries. Luckett, who was with Freeman at the hospital today, said the actor needed surgery but would be OK.
He said Freeman doesn’t remember much about the wreck, but he was on his way home when his car went off the road and flipped.
The accident occurred in rural Tallahatchie County, about 90 miles south of Memphis.
Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ben Williams told the Associated Press that Freeman was driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima belonging to Demaris Meyer of Memphis when the car left a rural highway and flipped several times.
“There’s no indication that either alcohol or drugs were involved,” Williams said. He said both Freeman and Meyer were wearing seat belts. The woman’s condition was not immediately available.
Clay McFerrin, editor of the Sun Sentinel in Charleston, told the AP he arrived at the accident scene on Mississippi Highway 32 soon after it happened about four miles west of Charleston, not far from where Freeman owns a home with his wife.
McFerrin said it appeared that Freeman’s car went airborne as it left the highway and landed in a ditch.
“They had to use the jaws of life to extract him from the vehicle,” McFerrin said. “He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point.”
