Date Night!

9 August 2008, 9:12 pm. Comments Off. Filed under Just Cuz.

The Mr and I did something tonight we haven’t done in……well, let’s just say a LONG time. We went out on a “date”. You know, the dinner and a show type of date.

We had dinner at the only restaurant in the area that comes close to be upscale. In other words, they serve alcohol. Since I don’t drink, it doesn’t matter to me, one way or the other. The food was fairly good, and the prices were appropriately high. They served ‘beer bread’! Ain’t that a hoot. Any Wisconsonite knows what that is.

We sat outside on the patio, so we could watch the pick ‘em up trucks go by on Main St. and smoke. When we had both lit up, I over heard a woman say, in her most snooty tone, “I thought restaurants in Tennessee were all smoke free!” To which I piped up saying, “They are, expect for outside!” Heh. Shy, I ain’t! I don’t think she’s a regular resident of the state. Oddly enough, there are a lot of people who have summer houses here. Why, I’m not really sure. If you’re going to winter in Florida, wouldn’t you have a summer house in someplace way up nor’t?

The Mr had seen a poster in one of the stores advertising a blue grass band, with a couple of others types for tonight. Why the heck not? There was a $5 admission fee. I thought we could probably swing that. :)

Well, we finished our dinner, walked across the street to the other side of the courthouse. The place the bands were playing obviously use to be the local movie house. Not a theater, a movie house. Yeah. It was that old. And smelled it too. Once we got use to it, it wasn’t so bad. It was clean, just really old.

The show was suppose to start at 7:30. Seems one of the bands was having major equipment problems, and were doing some serious sound check stuff. My ears started bleeding! Not really, but they should have. The kid kept saying, turn up this, turn up that. My suggestion would have been turn down your flippin’ mic, and MAYBE you could hear something. Jeeeez!

Lucky for us, they were the second act, after the bluegrass band.

I kept seeing these really young girls running to the back of the stage, and of course, my first thought….groupies. Nope. Turned out THEY were the bluegrass band. Called Turkey Creek Bluegrass Reunion. They played a song or two, and I was really impressed by the lead young lady. She was quite talented! So was the bass player. They both have unbelievable voices. Then, she introduced everyone, and gave their ages. She was all of 18. The mandolin player was…….TWELVE! At that moment, I realized………I’m OLD! The bass player with the mega voice is 15. The other girl was also 15. Didn’t hear much from her. I watched her hands, and I don’t think she was actually playing her guitar.

After they were finished, we decided sitting through a rock band who is already deaf, and is determined to make everyone in that small place deaf too, it would be in OUR best interest to come home.

It was a really nice evening. I think we’re going to have to do that a little more often.

Don’t Think He’s Dangerous?

Think again!

Obama Supports Global Tax From United Nations
Christine O’Donnell

For an entire week, Americans watched as Senator Barack Obama took his act on the road, courting the European elitists and cowtowing to an endless array of foreign politicians. At this point it may be easy to take Obama’s “celebri-plomacy” lightly. Yet, his trip highlights a dangerous threat to America’s national sovereignty in the form of his globalist policies that will diminish America’s role in the world and outsource decisions of vital national interest to the United Nations.

His Global Poverty Act, currently under consideration in Congress, is just one such policy. Despite its seemingly innocuous title, the Global Poverty Act would force America to adopt the U.N.’s “Millennium Development Goals” as official U.S. policy. This means outsourcing to the United Nations all important decisions concerning the use of U.S. foreign aid dollars. Not only that, but the fee for allowing the U.N. to play the “middle man” in our global war on poverty would be a tax of .7 percent of the U.S. Gross National Product. That’s right. Barack Obama and his liberal allies such as Senator Biden have signed on to a bill that would allow the U.N. to tax America (and Americans) an estimated $845 billion over the next 13 years. Obama’s plan represents perhaps the greatest affront to our national sovereignty since the War of 1812.

The Global Poverty Act dismisses the American ideals of a free-market economy and responsible government for a global bureaucracy that has already lost tens of millions in development funds to corruption. The measure demands virtually no accountability or reform from the impoverished and often oppressive nations who are the recipients of our charitable largess. Furthermore, the United Nations Development Program has become the favorite “rich uncle” of terrorist states and rogue regimes, accidentally funneling millions to North Korea’s illicit weapons programs and violating 95 U.S. export laws in the process.

Labor Day Back On The Calendar At Tyson

9 August 2008, 10:46 am. 4 Comments. Filed under 1st Amendment, Religion of Pieces.

Tyson plant adds Muslim holiday, keeps Labor Day

Union workers and officials at a Tyson Foods plant in Tennessee said Friday they have agreed to reinstate Labor Day as a paid holiday, and the plant will also observe the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr this year.

Tyson had previously agreed to drop Labor Day and substitute the Muslim holiday as part of a new 5-year contract to accommodate Muslim workers at the plant in Shelbyville, which is about 50 miles south of Nashville. The decision sparked widespread criticism, from local politicians to talk radio to the Internet.

I wrote about this here, here, and here. Yeah, I’d say there was quite a bit of ‘widespread criticism’! Labor Day is a federal holiday.

The Springdale, Ark.-based company said it requested reinstating Labor Day after complaints from plant workers and the public.

Personally, I see Labor Day as nothing more than one of those ‘Monday holidays’ when I don’t get mail. I’m not a fan of unions, and never have been. However, labor is what built this country, and those who have contributed to its success should be honored.

Union members voted Thursday to reinstate Labor Day as one of the plant’s paid holidays and keep Eid al-Fitr as an additional paid holiday for this year only. For the remainder of the contract, workers will have Labor Day and a personal holiday, which can be used to observe Eid al-Fitr or another day the employee’s supervisor approves.

Union officials have said at least a couple hundred of the 1,200 plant workers are Muslim.

How nice of them to ‘re-instate’ a FEDERAL HOLIDAY! Y’know, if this company wants to give their workers an extra paid holiday, that’s their business. Do ALL of the employees get the day off, with pay, or is it just the Muslims? According to previous reports, it was 700 plant workers. Now, it’s just a couple of hundred? Hmmm…..

Muslim civil rights advocates criticized Tyson Foods, and a union official said the company’s response was disingenuous.

“This wasn’t something imposed. It seems that this backtracking would be the result of the backlash from anti-Muslim hate (Web) sites and Islamophobes on the Internet,” said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for Washington D.C.-based Council on American-Islamic Relations.

DAMN STRAIGHT! I’d really like to know why they believe the company was backtracking? Because they re-instated a FEDERAL holiday? How is that backtracking? I guess they believe that their MUSLIMS holidays should take precedence over the federal one? Yes, let’s cancel all federal holidays in favor of a murderous religion. I don’t bloody well think so! I’m not forcing you to celebrate Christmas, which is also a federal law. If you get the day off, with pay, shut up!

Stuart Appelbaum, president of the union headquartered in New York, said he was surprised by the reaction to the holiday change.

Seriously? He was surprised by people’s reaction? I don’t suppose 9/11 has anything to do with the reaction, right? What planet does this yahoo live on anyway!?

“I would have thought that people would have been more sensitive and sympathetic to the concern to the members of our community, who want to celebrate their religious faith,” he said. “It’s a little disingenuous to say that they (Tyson) were responding to employee concerns. The proposal came from workers themselves.”

What’s the body count again thanks to the ‘sensitivity’ of Muslims?

Requests for workplace accommodations of Muslim religious obligations have become common around the country, say Muslim advocates.

In 2005, 30 workers walked off the job at a Dell Inc. plant in Nashville after alleging the company refused to let them pray at sunset.

Do Christians get to pray in the workplace? No, they don’t. All that “separation” stuff is ANTI Christian. When businesses start allowing Christians to have a room to pray in, I’ll start being a tad more ‘sensitive’.

Last year, dozens of Somali meatpacking workers at a Nebraska plant quit their jobs because they were not given enough time off for Muslim prayers, though they eventually returned to work at the Swift & Co. plant.

You are there to work. All this kowtowing to a specific religion, Islam, is what is putting the American people off. I’m pretty sure there are PLENTY of citizens who would love to have the jobs. Why not hire them?

Olympic tourist killed in Beijing knife attack

A knife-wielding Chinese man attacked two relatives of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men’s volleyball team at a tourist site in Beijing, killing one and injuring the other on the first day of the Olympics on Saturday, team officials and state media said.

The man then committed suicide by throwing himself from the second storey of the site, the 13th century Drum Tower just eight kilometres from the main Olympics site.

Many prayers go out to the family and friends. Is this the Chinese version of the suicide bomber? What possible purpose could the POS have for attacking, then committing suicide? I just don’t understand people anymore.

Russian troops raid Georgian town; scores dead

Russia sent hundreds of tanks and troops into the separatist province of South Ossetia and bombed Georgian towns Saturday in a major escalation of the conflict that has left scores of civilians dead and wounded.

Georgia, a staunch U.S. ally, launched a major offensive Friday to retake control of breakaway South Ossetia. Russia, which has close ties to the province and posts peacekeepers there, responded by sending in armed convoys and military combat aircraft.

Looks like we might be losing one of the few ‘staunch’ allies we have left. I’m thinking more and more that when Bush looked into Putin’s eyes, he didn’t see his soul, he saw an empty pit. I think he needs some stronger glasses.

Mbeki heads to Zimbabwe for talks

South African President Thabo Mbeki is due in Harare for talks with his Zimbabwean counterpart Robert Mugabe and the opposition’s Morgan Tsvangirai.

Mr Mbeki has been mediating between the two sides which have been holding talks in South Africa for more than a week.

Despite a news blackout imposed on the discussions, reports suggest a power-sharing deal may be close.

You don’t share power with a murderous thug, unless you have a death wish! Oh, he won’t do it himself…..he has LOTS of buds who would be more than happy to stage and ‘accident’.

Authorities: Retreaded tire blew on bus that crashed

Federal authorities imposed the restrictions on both companies because Angel Tours had too many citations for critical violations, and Iguala had not provided necessary insurance information, said Kristin Schrader, a safety administration spokeswoman.

In the past 30 months, Angel Tours collected 12 vehicle violations forcing authorities to revoke the carrier’s permission to travel across state lines in June, the same month de la Torre created a new bus company — Iguala — and located it in Angel Tours’ offices.

I had no idea they still made retreads. Those things are dangerous, especially on HOT Texas roads. Experience is a great teacher! Just because you change the name of the company, does not make the company any more safety minded. Thi is one of the few times I’d advocate for a gubmint bureaucracy. There needs to be some sort of agency who is in charge of these types of businesses.

John Edwards Admits to Affair, Denies He’s Father of Lover’s Child

Former presidential hopeful John Edwards admitted to an affair Friday with his former videographer, Rielle Hunter, though he firmly denied tabloid reports that he is the father of her child.

Edwards released a statement late in the day saying he made a “serious error in judgment,” after telling ABC News’ Nightline in an interview scheduled to be broadcast Friday night that he repeatedly lied about the affair during his failed presidential campaign.

Time to do some swabs! Y’know, I don’t care that he lied to the American people. He’s a politician and lawyer, they both lie for a living. He lied to his family! He has betrayed the truth of his wife. THAT is a bigger deal to me.

Diplomats say Syria turned away IAEA

Syria has blocked a new visit by International Atomic Energy Agency experts seeking to follow up on intelligence that Damascus built a secret nuclear program built with the help of North Korea, diplomats told The Associated Press on Saturday.

The diplomats also said Washington was circulating a note among members of the IAEA board opposing a Syrian push for a seat on the 35-nation board. The board normally works by consensus and a seat held by Damascus could thus hamper any investigation into its alleged nuclear activities.

Syria fears a massive atomic agency investigation similar to the probe Iran has been subjected to more than five years.

East Tennessee constable wins by 1 vote, her own

All it takes is one vote to win. Just ask a Tennessee woman who was elected constable by voting for herself.

Angela Tuttle, 32, said her father encouraged her to run as a write-in candidate because no one else was vying for one of the positions in Hancock County, which is in northeastern Tennessee.

Tuttle said her husband initially didn’t even realize she was running.

“I finally told him about a month before the election,” she told The Associated Press on Friday. Her husband didn’t think she would win, but now he “just grins at her,” she said.

Hancock County election officials said 131 voters of the 674 registered in the 3rd District voted Thursday. Tuttle’s vote was the only one cast in the constable race. She will be sworn in Dec. 1.

Proof your one vote IS important!

Phelps sets Olympic record

Michael Phelps got off to a quick start in his quest for eight gold medals, breaking his own Olympic record for the 400-meter individual medley in the preliminaries. Phelps covered the distance in 4:07.82, while his mark from the 2004 Athens Olympics was 4:08.26.

Congrats. Still not watching ‘em.

Caddo looks outside U.S. to fill teaching posts

Dozens of vacancies in key subject areas have forced the Caddo public school district to look outside the country to fill teacher positions.

Forty-two teachers from the Philippines will fill key positions in math, science, special education and English — critical shortage areas for which school districts throughout the U.S. have trouble finding qualified people.

‘scuse me! What is wrong with this picture?

State yields to sect on driver’s license

West Virginia on Friday started keeping driver’s license photos out of a computer database for members of a small religious group who believe digital storage is a “mark of the beast” that evokes biblical prophecy.

State Division of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Joseph Cicchirillo said the group of about 50 or 60 Christians, who are not affiliated with a particular church, contacted the agency two or three years ago to object to their pictures “being on a database that can be exchanged throughout the world or hacked into.”

Hmmm…. I’m not sure their interpretation is on the ‘mark’. Hey, can I get my picture removed? It’s horrible!

Breaking: Bernie Mac Dead

9 August 2008, 8:43 am. 4 Comments. Filed under General News, Life.

Comedian and Actor Bernie Mac Dies at Age 50

A publicist says Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor and comedian Bernie Mack has died at age 50.

Publicist Danica Smith says Bernie Mac died early Saturday at a hospital in the Chicago area of complications due to pneumonia.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body’s organs, but he had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently had been hospitalized and treated for pneumonia.

Mac had starring roles in “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Bad Santa,” “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” and “Transformers.”

The comedian drew critical and popular acclaim with his Fox television series “The Bernie Mac Show,” which aired more than 100 episodes from 2001 to 2006.

I really liked his stuff. Great facial expression! Rest in peace sir. Prayers to the family.

Verse of the Day

Titus 3:3-7

3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,

5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
