Hanna Hits Hampton

6 September 2008, 1:37 pm. Comments Off. Filed under Weather.

A very long time friend of mine, the RO woman, lives right down the street from the James River, which is off the Chesapeake Bay, which is….oh hell, just look on a map, ok?

She was out this afternoon between downpours, and took a few pictures I thought I’d share with y’all.

This one is my favorite!

I miss crabbing.  sigh….

Now, I’m not trying to make light of this storm.  I know many have died in the Caribbean, and my prayers are with all of them.  However, listening to the news last night, you would have thought the east coast was going to be washed away.

Seriously, I hope everyone out there is ok, and they keep their power on.

If she sends anymore, I’ll be sure to post a few.

And here they are:

I Just Can’t Seem To Win

6 September 2008, 1:09 pm. 12 Comments. Filed under Critters, The Peacock War.

Since our “neighbor” wouldn’t control his excessively pooping peacocks, we decided to help him out a bit.  His goats have been another story.  He did manage to fix his fence last year, but evidently, not very well, since we’ve had a few visitations in the past couple of weeks.

Now, seriously, I wouldn’t mind them staying out in the weedy areas.  Great lawn mowers in a way.  But if we don’t run ‘em off, they tend to get into the stuff we spent money on to have planted, and they killed 3 of my magnolia trees.  Not to mention numerous other plants and flowers.  Which by the way, for which said ‘neighbor’ never did re-emburse us.

I managed to hobble out there, cane and all, and shoo ‘em off.  At least for the time being.  Did you know that canes don’t work too well on soft ground?  The off and on rain from the recent hurricanes and tropical storms did manage to water the grass quite a bit.  And that’s the ONLY time this dirt has been soft.  Just ask the Mr!  :)   The stuff is like concrete most of the time.

Oh yeah, back to the goats.  I’m thinking a big ol’ goat roast might be in order if Mr “neighbor’ doesn’t fix his fence…….again.

Old Joke, Updated

6 September 2008, 10:48 am. Comments Off. Filed under Chuckles.

Lil Suzy had a box of very small kittens that she was to give away, so she had them out on the street corner with a sign ‘FREE KITTENS’ next to them.

Suddenly a big line of big black cars drove up with a policeman on a motorcycle in front. The cars all stopped and a tall man stepped out from the biggest car. ‘Hi, little girl, what do you have there in the box?’, he asked.

‘Kittens,’ Lil Suzy says. ‘They’re so small, their eyes are not even open yet.’

‘What kind of kittens are they?’ he asked.

‘They are Democrats,’ says Lil Suzy.

The tall man smiled broadly, returned to his car and they drove away.

Sensing a great photo opportunity, the tall man, Senator Barak Obama called his campaign manager and told him about the little girl and the kittens. It was planned that they would return the next day, have all the media there and tell everyone about these great kittens.

The next day, Lil Suzy is standing out on the corner with her box of kittens with the ‘FREE KITTENS’ sign and the big motorcade of black cars pulled up again. This time with all the vans and trucks from ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN. Everyone had their cameras ready and then, Senator Obama got out of his limo and walked up to Lil Suzy.

‘Now don’t be frightened,’ he said, ‘I just want you to tell all these nice news people just what kind of kittens you’re giving away today.’

‘Yes, sir,’ Suzy said, ‘they are all REPUBLICAN kittens.’

Taken by surprise before so much of the media, Senator Obama said, ‘But honey, yesterday when I stopped, you told me that they were DEMOCRATS.’

Lil Suzy says, ‘Yes sir, I know I said that. But today, they have their eyes open.’

Thanks Sharon. :)

Digg Is Really Starting To Piss Me Off!

6 September 2008, 10:38 am. 2 Comments. Filed under Blog Stuff.

I joined up with Digg, hoping that some of my posts would get out to a wider audience.  Not for the numbers, but for information sharing, which at this time of the year, so close to the election, it’s really important that folks know exactly what’s going on, right?

Well, Digg doesn’t have a whole lot of options when it comes to news, and opinion.  So, I click on the one that is closest to the topic.  Repeatedly, it tells me that topic isn’t valid, and won’t let my “digg” go through.  If a story about a crime can’t go through as “World News”, what other options do I have?  “Business & Finance”, “Political Opinion”, Political News”, and “2008 U.S. Elections”.  Excuse me, but the previously posted story about the stupid terrorist does NOT fit into any of those categories.  Nor, does it fit into the sports, the gaming crap, technology, or any of the other categories.  No, the best category would be “World News”.

What a crock!

Capitol Building – Man Arrested Nearby With IED, Rifle, Ammunition Allegedly Found in Jeep

A man is under arrest in Washington after an improvised explosive device, a rifle and some ammunition were allegedly found in his jeep, Capitol Police said Friday.

The man stopped to ask police for directions near the Capitol building at about 11 a.m. EDT Friday, at the intersection of 2nd and Independence Avenue Southeast, according to Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider.

The officer responding noticed a rifle case on the car seat and inspected the jeep, discovering the IED, rifle and ammunition. A canine unit was enlisted to help.

Did I miss this on the nightly news? Or was this just one of those things they didn’t think newsworthy?  Oddly enough, that guy’s name wasn’t Mohammed.  Evidently, he wasn’t too bright either.  You don’t ask a cop for directions when you have that kind of stuff in your vehicle!

Man charged with cheating sick teen out of wish

Douglas Riesberg, 53, received $11,000 from the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s Chicago chapter in March for a custom go-cart for the sick boy, who is 16 and on dialysis, Arizona officials say.

But the go-cart never was delivered, and the money never returned, said Yavapai County sheriff’s spokesman Dwight D’Evelyn.

Read the whole story. THIS one will seriously get your blood boiling! I do not understand how some people have no conscious whatsoever! Cheating a kid?????

Hampton opens storm shelter at Bethel High

“Although there has been no evacuation ordered, Hampton citizens in low-lying flood areas and those in trailers are able to come to this shelter” at 1067 Big Bethel Road, the city said in a statement.

People should wear comfortable clothing, bring enough beverages and non-perashable food to last at least three days, sleeping materials such as a sleeping bag, blankets, and pillows. They should also bring flash lights with extra batteries; books, games, and cards for entertainment; toiletries; and medications for three days. All items should be labeled.

No weapons, alcohol or drugs are allowed on the premises.

Y’know, when I went to this high school, waaaaay back when it was brand new, I don’t think anyone would have even considered necessary to tell folks such items were not allowed. The last time I was in that area a couple of years ago, it had definitely become, well, a bit run down. I guess times do change, don’t they.

Fannie, Freddie takeover possible

Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. called in top executives of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac late Friday to hammer out details of a rescue plan for the troubled mortgage giants that could go so far as a full government takeover, according to people familiar with the effort.

Paulson, together with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, was expected to meet through the weekend with Fannie Mae Chief Executive Daniel Mudd, Freddie Mac CEO Richard Syron and federal regulators to unveil a plan by the time Asian financial markets open Monday morning.

NO!  And not just no, but HELL NO!  No bailouts!  Isn’t our deficit big enough without taking on the whole freakin’ countries mortgage payments?  This is ridiculous!  All the D.C. politicians who have been so closely connected to Mac & Mae should be run out of office, and a PRIVATE institution should take them over.  NOT the freakin’ useless feckless gumbint!

Pressure Grows on EU to Abandon Biofuels

With food prices skyrocketing and faith in biofuels plummeting, many are demanding that the European Union back away from its commitment to eco-fuel. Even the EU’s own scientists are skeptical.

Good heavens! Does this mean common sense is making a come back? Anyone who believes that putting food in your gas tank is a good idea should receive a lobotomy! People are starving because of this kind of crap!

First generation biofuels “don’t hold as much potential environmental benefits as people thought when they embarked on these policies,” Stefan Tangermann, Director of the Trade and Agricultural Directorate for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), told SPIEGEL ONLINE. “We must come to the conclusion that maybe it is time to revisit our commitment to biofuels.”

Lousy gas mileage, more emissions. Yeah, I’d say it was a REAL good time to rethink that ‘commitment’. Asshats!

No interest paid on Rangel’s villa

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rep. Charles B. Rangel paid no mortgage interest on a beach resort property for more than 10 years, a lawyer for the powerful Democrat said Friday.

The New York congressman’s lawyer, Lanny Davis, said that Mr. Rangel got his no-interest deal for the villa in the Dominican Republic because he was an original buyer in the resort development, and in the early days after Mr. Rangel’s 1987 purchase the rental income it generated failed to meet expectations.

Don’t you ever wonder where our so called representatives get all this extra money to buy stuff, like villas in the Dominican Republic? Hmmm…???

45-nation group approves landmark US-India nuclear deal

Nations that supply nuclear material and technology overcame fierce obstacles Saturday and approved a landmark US plan to engage in atomic trade with India – a deal that reverses more than three decades of American policy.
(…)
“Today we have reached a landmark decision to allow for civilian nuclear trade with India,” John Rood, acting US undersecretary of state for arms control issues, told reporters.

Austria, one of the holdouts along with Ireland and New Zealand, said it lifted its objections after India pledged on Friday not to touch off a new nuclear arms race or share sensitive nuclear technology with other countries.

I wonder how many such promises have been made in the past, by other countries, and broken? I’d say it all depends on who is in power in India on whether or not this promise is kept.

‘Hundreds’ killed by Haiti storm

Almost 500 bodies have been found in the port city of Gonaives, Haiti, after floodwaters caused by recent storms receded, according to reports.

Police commissioner Ernst Dorfeuille said 495 bodies had been found and the toll could get higher.

A ship carrying 33 tons of UN aid arrived in Haiti on Friday to help an estimated 600,000 people struggling in the wake of tropical storm Hanna.

Prayers with all those affected.

McCain, Obama tied in TV audiences

Three times in two weeks, political speeches were watched by more people than the “American Idol” finale, the Academy Awards and the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics this year.

“It clearly suggests that a great number of Americans think that who will be the next president is important and worthy of their time,” said Tom Rosenstiel, a former political reporter and director of the Project for Excellence in journalism.

Perhaps it means that people are snapping out of their somnambulism?  Then again, a large chunk of those viewers have already drunk the kool aid.  sigh….

Bhutto widower elected Pakistani president

Pro-Zardari lawmakers, some in tears, shouted “Long live Bhutto!” as the vote tallies came in. The couple’s two jubilant but tearful daughters, one carrying a portrait of their late mother, smiled and hugged friends in the gallery of the National Assembly.

But Saturday also brought a brutal reminder of the threats to the nuclear-armed nation’s stability as a suicide car bomber killed at least 17 people and wounded dozens near the northwestern city of Peshawar.

The blast destroyed a police checkpoint and collapsed several nearby shops. Civilians dug frantically with their hands for possible survivors.

With the increase in violence in Pakistan, is this guy sure he wants to be president? I hope he has some trustworthy body guards and a good bullet proof vest!

Verse of the Day

Mark 11:22-26

22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
