Influx of evacuees straining Memphis; city isn’t prepared for Ike, TEMA says

Last week, the state helped more than 6,300 people in 33 shelters during the Hurricane Gustav evacuation — about 3,000 government-assisted evacuees in the Memphis area.

Continued threats of Ike — which is expected to hit somewhere between the Florida Panhandle and the Texas coast by this weekend — have left officials evaluating preparedness for a new influx of evacuees.

“Basically, we need to reset, re-staff and resupply,” Heidt said.

Local emergency officials say that, regardless, they’ll be preparing for evacuees, given the area’s proximity to areas in Ike’s projected path.

Like every other surrounding state, there are just so many hotel rooms, and so many people to do the volunteering. I’ve no doubt that TN will be prepared, but it’s going to strain recourse, and some nerves, that’s for sure.

Vitamin ‘can prevent memory loss’

A vitamin found in meat, fish and milk may help stave off memory loss in old age, a study has suggested.

Older people with lower than average vitamin B12 levels were more than six times more likely to experience brain shrinkage, researchers concluded.

Quick! Gimme some! I’m hearing rattling from the shrinkage!

Pelosi to meet archbishop for talks on communion

San Francisco Archbishop George H. Niederauer requested the meeting after receiving letters and e-mails from “many Catholics” expressing dismay over Pelosi’s remarks that the question of when life begins remained controversial within the church. He said many of those writing questioned whether Pelosi should be able to receive communion.

Pelosi made the remarks in an Aug. 24 interview with “Meet the Press” host Tom Brokaw. In response to Brokaw’s question, “When does life begin?” Pelosi answered, “We don’t know. The point is that it shouldn’t have an impact on the woman’s right to choose.” She went on to say, “I don’t think anyone can tell you when life begins — when human life begins.”

Honestly, for someone so clueless, I’m really surprised the Dhimmis haven’t stripped her of her Speaker position. But then again, a good chunk of them are fairly clueless as well, so I guess it’s their ‘normal’.

Furor Erupts at United Nations At Seminar on Terror Victims

A one-day seminar organized by the United Nations to highlight the plight of victims of terrorism is coming under heavy criticism from Arab diplomats and reporters who say the process of selecting the participants is flawed.

The inclusion of the father of an Israeli girl who was killed in a 2001 suicide bombing in Jerusalem among the 18 victims of terrorism in today’s seminar set off a volley of questions yesterday from U.N. reporters, who accused a top aide to Secretary-General Ban, Robert Orr, of bias against Muslims and of ignoring the victims of “state terrorism.”

In one of the most pointed criticisms of the seminar, Arab diplomats wondered aloud how the organizers could have chosen a list of terror victims when the United Nations has not yet managed to settle on a definition of terrorism. The failure of the U.N. General Assembly to decide on a comprehensive definition, however, is widely seen as a result of Arab countries’ insistence that Israeli civilians who die in attacks be defined as casualties of a just war against a “foreign occupation,” not as victims of terrorism.

Are they flippin’ kidding? They need a definition of ‘terror’? Here, let me help them out a bit:

ter-ror Pronunciation: \?ter-?r, ?te-r?r\
Function: noun Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French terrour, from Latin terror, from terr?re to frighten; akin to Greek trein to be afraid, flee, tremein to tremble — more at tremble Date: 14th century

1: a state of intense fear2 a: one that inspires fear : scourge b: a frightening aspect
c: a cause of anxiety : worry d: an appalling person or thing; especially : brat3:  reign of terror 4: violent or destructive acts (as bombing) committed by groups in order to intimidate a population or government into granting their demands synonyms see fear

Now, what is it exactly that is unclear to the Arab states?  Seems pretty bloomin’ clear to me.  And since we see the results quite frequently on the evening news, mostly in Muslim countries, I don’t know why they have such difficulty figuring it out.

LA County puts taco truck battle on front burner

Southern California’s taco truck war continued to sizzle as county officials asked a judge to reinstate a law he threw out last month that had forced truck operators to move every hour or face the threat of jail.

County officials say the trucks, many of which have become the equivalent of neighborhood restaurants, are a nuisance, parking at the same spot every day and bringing in noise and traffic. Operators respond that they meet the same health standards as restaurants and are being unfairly targeted because of organized political pressure from restaurateurs.

As yes. And once again we see the moonbats in Los Angeles going out of their way to squash the “American Dream”. Aren’t these the same people who insist on lowering vehicle “emissions”? Well, how can they do that if they insist these trucks crank up, spewing said emissions, every couple of hours? Aren’t they a tad hypocritical? tsk tsk I have come to the conclusion, only the ‘elites’ of California are allowed to succeed, and move up in the world.  All other must be stiffled!  Damn good reason NOT to move there, and if you are there…..LEAVE!  :)

Minister Eitan: Kidnapping Ahmadinejad is a Possibility

Pensioners Affairs Minister Rafi Eitan, who commanded the 1960 Mossad operation to capture fugitive Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in Argentina, says the kidnapping of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a distinct possibility.

Oh yeah. That would go over real well. I would think an ‘accident’ would be much better, like a car wreck, or maybe a piano falling on his head.  But ya better make sure ya get the radical mullahs too.

Russians pilfer U.S. equipment

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said Russian troops broke open two large shipping containers in the Georgian port of Poti and “pilfered” the contents. Sensitive communications and electronics equipment used by U.S. forces during a joint U.S.-Georgia military exercise prior to the Aug. 8 incursion had already been shipped out of the port, he added.

One of the containers belonged to the Marines, which also lost five Humvees to the Russians. Mr. Whitman said he did not know who owned the other container.

The Russian newspaper Izvestia reported that the captured equipment included Global Positioning System equipment used in weapons targeting, identification, friend-or-foe electronic gear and classified radio and reconnaissance equipment.

A spokesman for the Russian Embassy in Washington, Evgeny Khorisko, said he had no knowledge of such equipment being seized or containers being opened. “I only know about the Humvees,” Mr. Khorisko said.

Not only is the Bear rearing it’s ugly head again, it’s also a common thief! And admits it!  Classy there, Putin. Real classy!

HPD: Cell-phone store clerk guns down attempted robber

A clerk at a southwest Houston cell-phone store fatally shot a man who tried to rob the store, Houston police said.

The robbery occurred about 7 p.m. Monday at a T-Mobile store in the 7500 block of the Southwest Freeway, police said. The location is near Fondren.

The names of the clerk and the dead man were not available early this morning.

Nice shootin’ Tex! Maybe if there were more armed clerks, with proper training of course, there would be fewer robberies……countrywide! :)

ATV rider hits trooper’s car, faces charges

Kentucky State Police said charges are pending against an eastern Kentucky man who crashed his all-terrain vehicle into a trooper’s car.

Police said Tommy Newman of Whitesburg was airlifted to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn., after the incident on Friday. Newman was reported by the Lexington Herald-Leader as recovering from his injuries.

Trooper Ben Campbell said he spotted Newman riding on Ky. 317 and turned around to pull him over.

Campbell said Newman braked suddenly, causing the trooper to swerve into the other lane — then Newman made an abrupt turn into the side of the cruiser.

Newman had no helmet and was thrown from the ATV.

Just how stupid do you have to be to attack a cruiser with an ATV? What’cha wanna bet there was a bit of alcohol involved?

Obama’s Tax Plan Based on ‘Neighborliness’

We can afford to pay higher taxes. They can’t. That’s the gist of Sen. Barack Obama’s tax plan, which he discussed with Fox New Channel’s Bill O’Reilly in an interview that aired Monday night.

What’s this “we” nonsense? You got a mouse in your pocket? My neighbors help me out when I need it. I don’t mark over there and demand they do it. THAT is not neighborly! Nor is it neighborly when the gubmint forces you to give money you can ill afford. Money that could create jobs for those who need them, instead of punishing those who do well in their chosen field. B. Hussein, like so many others with a “D” behind their names, and even not a few “R”‘s are totally clueless as to how the REAL world works. Those “they” BO is talking about…..most of ‘em don’t pay taxes anyway!  Actually, a large chunk get back money they didn’t pay in.

Project 2996

Sadly, it’s that time of year again when we honor those who died on 9/11.  The 2996 Project is looking for some bloggers who will honor at least one of our lost.  Time is short, so please, if you want to put a little time into a project, please go here, send an email letting them know you want to participate.  You’ll be assigned a name, and it will be up to you as how much, or how little you’ll post about the person.

FYI, this is not a partisan issue.  This is an American issue.  We can all put aside our differences for one day to honor those who were murdered by the 19.  None of us, not one single person, should ever forget!

Titus 2:2-6

2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.

3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
