The public television show “Bill Moyers Journal” explored Friday night if hate language played a role in the shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville on Sunday, July 27.
See the video of the show on the PBS web site.
Ugly and evil comes in all shapes and sizes.
The segment suggests that conservative radio “shock talkers” amp up outrage, often suggesting violent action. Moyers, noting that several radio talk show hosts declined to come on the show, said he didn’t think any of the talk show hosts mentioned would have wanted the shooting to happen, but the media does provide “the fodder” for good and evil.
Who, exactly, are “shock talkers” that are conservative? I’ve heard of “shock jocks”, like Howard Stern, but the only “shock talkers” that come to mind are definitely NOT conservative. Moonbat extraordinaire, Rhandi Rhodes, falls into that category. Come to think of it, why wasn’t she arrested for advocating for the death of the POTUS? And of course, there’s Michael Savage, who says some seriously outrageous things.
On the show’s blog, the question is asked: “Has American political discourse become so toxic as to be counterproductive? Do you expect it to get better, stay the same, or become worse?”
Looking at some of the comments on the site, there seems to be a common thread. “Bring back the “Fairness Doctine”, that has NOTHING to do with fairness whatsoever.
The idea that conservatives had anything to do with this man shooting anyone in that church is stretching reality beyond comprehension. I don’t often listen to the radio anymore, but when I do, I have NEVER heard anything that would push me to harm another living being. No one I know who listens to talk radio would either.
I will repeat what I said when it happened. This is a tragedy. The ONLY person to blame for the crime is the one who committed the crime. Bill Moyers lost any credibility a LONG time ago.
Blaming conservative talk radio for the action of this mentally disturbed animal is like blaming flies for garbage.

I finally got a hold of my friend in Houston. Amazingly, her biggest complaint, her ice has melted. Being the hard headed type, she was talking about heading out to hunt down a few bags. Heh. I worry about that woman. Ok, she’s fairly old, but if she doesn’t have power, what on earth would make her think that the C store down the road would have power. sigh…
I also spoke to my niece, who lives next to my sister, her mom. Her house got hit by a tree, but it was way too nasty right now to check the extent of the damage, if there is any. They also are without power, but since they live out in the boonies, they have generators….just in case. I guess this is one of those ‘in case’ moments. They are located about 130 miles from Galveston, so this is one seriously nasty storm.
Talked to Ick also a little while ago. He’s at work, in Dallas, and the wind is cracking one of his store’s windows. Granted, a rock had already gotten it started, but it’s being spidered even more. They were working to get it boarded up before it blows in on ‘em.
Mexican police said on Friday they have found the bodies of 24 men who were bound and shot to death execution-style outside the capital.
The bodies found Friday represent one of the largest single mass executions in Mexico in recent memory.
Police and soldiers were at the scene of the crime in a rural area just west of Mexico City, which has been marked by gangland slayings and land disputes between farming communities.
The killings are “without doubt” linked to organized crime, said Alberto Bazbaz, the attorney general of Mexico State, which borders Mexico City.
Gee, y’think? How long before cops start finding such executions on this side of the border?
Vince Young “mentioned suicide several times” during a meeting with a psychologist Monday before Titans Coach Jeff Fisher called Metro police to search for his missing quarterback, according to a police report obtained Friday.
The supplement report gives more indications of Young’s emotional state after a difficult season opener Sunday at LP Field — he threw two interceptions, was booed and suffered a knee injury — as well as Monday night’s incidents.
The kid had a tough opener. He talked to his shrink, and now it’s national news? Now he’s going to have to deal with the vultures, aka ‘press’, dogging his every move. Way to go pissants! On the other hand, if he’s going to be in the public arena, he needs to grow a pair.
Russia announced Friday it was renovating a Syrian port for use by the Russian fleet in what signals an effort for a better foothold in the Mediterranean amid the rift with the United States over Georgia.
Russian President Dmitry…
Syria was Moscow’s strongest Middle East ally during the Cold War. The alliance largely waned after the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union, though Russia has continued some weapons sales to Damascus. Syrian President Bashar Assad has increasingly reached out to Russia recently, including seeking weapons and offering broader military cooperation.
There is little doubt left that Russia is making a BIG move in the area. I’m not so sure it’s going to be another ‘Cold War’. Odds are, it’s going to get pretty hot.
As artery-clogging trans fat becomes officially forbidden in Boston restaurants today, state health authorities are saying they do not believe they have the authority to extend the ban unilaterally across Massachusetts.
Instead, a spokesman for the state’s public health commissioner said a review of the agency’s powers suggested that only the Legislature can impose a statewide prohibition on trans fat, long a staple of french fries, doughnuts, and other food sold in restaurants and corner stores.
A top lawmaker last month asked the Department of Public Health to review its options after legislation to ban trans fat across the state languished in the Senate despite winning approval in the House of Representatives.
I wasn’t aware that when people elected folks to office, they were also giving over control of their entire lives! Contrary to what some seem to think, we are still capabel of making our own decisions.
As the sun rose this morning on the scene of a train crash that killed at least 18 people, rescue workers used heavy machinery to untangle the twisted remains of a Metrolink passenger train in the hopes of finding more survivors.
“They are pulling things apart very carefully because, if there is a miracle, they don’t want to undo it,” said Lt. John Romero of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Prayers with the families. Also, prayers with the rescue workers, that their hands will gently bring out survivors, and the physicians, in their work to heal the injured.
Gas prices, lines at the pumps and tempers increased Friday afternoon as word-of-mouth reports sent worried people rushing to fill up at gas stations from Millington to DeSoto County.
Police directed traffic at a Kroger in Hernando, while Bartlett police officers were sent to the Exxon on Stage at Bartlett Boulevard to quell rising tempers of those jockeying for position in line.
Only 19% of the refineries were in slow down, or shut down mode. It was also announced that there was plenty of gas to weather the storm, and the countries needs. So, could someone please explain to me why people went into panic mode? Why was there an entire town I Arkansas that had hiked the price up to $4.85 in a matter of hours? Get a grip!
The six no-bid deals were for work to increase Iraqi oil production from existing oil fields by half a million barrels a day – the same amount by which OPEC countries agreed to reduce output.
After its cancellation of the deals, Iraq reduced by 200,000 barrels per day its goal of producing 2.9 million barrels per day by the end of the year.
The deals would have been the first major oil contracts with the central government since the toppling of Saddam Hussein in 2003, though the Kurdistan region has separately signed more than 20 contracts.
Do ya ever get the feeling that Iraq is going to screw us over? (sarcasm)
Five explosions rocked busy market places in New Delhi on Saturday evening, killing twenty people and injuring many others.
The blasts at Ghaffar market in Karol Bagh, at Connaught Place and Greater Kailash took place in a quick succession, police said.
People have gone insane!
From the NY Slimes:
These are the only two places I’ve found, so far, that are Houston area specific:
If you come across any others, please let me know, and I will add them.
Massive Hurricane Ike weakened to a Category 1 storm Saturday morning after ravaging southeast Texas and battering the coast with driving rain and ferocious wind gusts as residents who decided too late they should have heeded calls to evacuate made futile calls for rescue.
Though it would be daybreak before the storm’s toll was clear, already, the damage was extensive. Thousands of homes and government buildings had flooded, roads were washed out, 2.9 million people lost power and several fires burned unabated as crews could not reach them. But the biggest fear was that tens of thousands of people had defied orders to flee and would need to be rescued from submerged homes and neighborhoods.
Well, I’ve only had one check in so far. Ick’s dad seems to have weathered the storm out in Missouri City, but is without power. I’ve tried to contact my friend in the SW part of Houston, house and cell…..”all circuits are busy”. sigh… No answer at my sister’s.

Mark 4:3-9, 14-20
3 Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:
4 And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.
5 And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:
6 But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.
8 And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.
9 And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
14 The sower soweth the word.
15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.
16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;
17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.
18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,
19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
20 And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.
