This post from Fred at Real Debate Wisconsin (I linked it here earlier today) has got the whole country buzzing!  The list of folks speaking out against this outrage is growing!

Mom Angered to Find Obama Speech in Son’s Middle-School English Text

A Wisconsin mother is furious that her tax dollars helped buy a middle-school textbook that includes a passage from Barack Obama’s speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention — but has no mention of John McCain.

My understanding is that this is a literature textbook.  What happened to William Shakespear?  How about Robert Frost?

The textbook, published by an arm of Houghton Mifflin Company, focuses on a portion of Obama’s 1995 autobiography, “Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance,” in which Obama writes about a month-long visit by his Kenyan father when he was 10 and living in Hawaii.

The 20-page section, which kicks off with a student discussion of “What Makes You Proud?” ends with a portion of Obama’s speech, “Out of Many, One,” at the 2004 Democratic Convention in Boston, and a photo of him there, surrounded by Obama placards.

Obama was running for Senate in Illinois in 2004.

Wasn’t there anyone else running for the Senate anywhere else in the country?

“The kicker was the photo towards the end with Obama and at least eight visible Obama signs, and the one with the Web site on it,” she said. “Obviously, it was the 2004 Web site, but you can still go right to it, and I think that to me was just over the top. It didn’t need to be in there.”

The mother said any mention of Obama should have included passages from other politicians, such as McCain.

“McCain is a prisoner of war — that’s a story in itself,” she said. “Or Dick Cheney’s wife has written children’s stories. Was that in any of their books?”

Obama has done NOTHING but have a couple of books published. It’s questionable if he actually wrote them himself, or had a ghost writer.

“The Racine Unified School District is a multicultural school district with 49 percent of our student body comprising students of color,” the school said. “Identifying materials that reflect our student population is a priority.

It seems to me they are implying that the 49% are all Dhimmicrats. Isn’t that rather arrogant of them? Do they think there are no ‘people of color’ who are McCain supporters?

The mother, who says she’s an independent, contacted the blog “Real Debate Wisconsin” to tell it about the textbook, rather than approach teachers, because she said she didn’t want to jeopardize her son’s grades.

This is one of the biggest problems we’ve got today. Parents have NO control over what is taught to their children. If more parents would step forward, and take back control of our schools, I do believe we’d have a better educated population!

    I freakin’ love it!!  Again, as a parent of a 6th grader at RUSD, this made my blood boil!!  Behold the power of bloggers!!  Last count Fred had over 14,000 hits on his site.  BTW Kate, I’m now following you on twitter!  :)

    @Chris from Racine:

    Following right back atcha! LOL

    14,000? Dang! I barely do that in a month, much less a day. sigh… Well, Lord knows…this is a HUGE deal, and should be reported EVERYWHERE!

    Have ya considered homeschooling? :? There are way too many public schools that have forgotten their job.

    Kate – you’ve got my email address – how do I go about finding info about homeschooling?  I know I can’t do it; do you know if others homeschool kids that aren’t their own?
    P.S. – are you going to be at Steveeg for the debate tomorrow?

    @Chris from Racine:

    Welp, if there is a co-op type group, the parents switch off on different subjects, and you might be able get involved in such a group. I’d suggest you check out Wisconsin Homeschooling for more info. Each state has different laws. I know that in TN, you have to be connected to an accredited ‘school’, and be certified.

    I can guarantee, it’s not easy, and it can get expensive, book wise, but I believe that it is one of the best options for kids these days. I’ve met a LOT of home schooled kids, and most of them are unbelievably mature, polite, and SMART!

    @ Chris
    Homeschooling Dad here.  In PA, we have Charter Schools.  Everything is funded by our tax dollars and it all takes place online in my home.  They have teachers online, chat classrooms and we have a say in everything.  Check to see if there are any Charter Schools in WI.

    @Ol’ Broad
    How about a $$ reward for the ghost writer to come forward?

    Also, as far as the website thing; did you know that if you go to http://www.Nader2008.com (not his official site), it, well, redirects, um, try it!

    @ Ol’ Broad & Pastor John

    Thanks for the advice – I’ll look into it.  My son consistently scores well above average, and I certainly don’t want him lost in the system of RUSD.

  13. olbroad. 15 October 2008, 9:03 am

    @Chris and Pastor
    I completely forgot about the online charter schools.  They don’t have any around here, that I’m aware of, that the school board accepts.  MUCH better idea to use that type of thing sometimes.

    Pastor, I think that pissant terrorists already makes plenty of money from the taxpayers.  grrrrr..  Probably doesn’t need it.

    How do they get away with that kind of nonsense?  I’m pretty sure Nadar has a site.  Why would those weasels do that?

  14. Chris from Racine. 15 October 2008, 9:18 am

    Simple – because they can.  Unreal!
