An Ol' Broad's Ramblings

Playing Tourist on Day 8

This morning we flew back to Tel Aviv to be picked up by Avi, our guide.  Now, I’ve had some issues with my first name getting through security, but this was by far, the most interesting.  The guy was unbelievably polite!  Honestly, TSA could learn a LOT from Israeli security folks!

We got to Tel Aviv around 11 and immediately started our trek north.  First stop, Caesarea!  The Mr and I both noticed this sign before heading into the park:

Well, why not!  Vegetarians need love too, I suppose.  :-D

Some Roman statues were awaiting us.

Judging by the size of this foot, the actual statue must have been huge.  The detail is amazing, down to the veins and a pretty good pedicure!  I could use such services about now.

The theater and some stuff behind the theater we didn’t get to check out.  :?

Pontius Pilate’s “palace”, according to the stone that was found.  Looks like they’ve been doing some renovations on some it it.  What’cha think?  Heh.

But I do think the swimming pool could use some serious work.

The hippodrome, for horse racing and such, and sitting on really uncomfortable looking seats.

Off in the distance is a Crusader fortress.

Then a quick stop at a nearby Roman aqueduct, that goes on, according to Avi, for five miles.  We didn’t walk the distance, so I’m just going to take his word for it.

A quick (relatively speaking) drive to Haifa, a few pictures, and some much needed lunch.  The Baha’ai (?) gardens were gorgeous, best seen from above.

That’s Lebanon way off in the distance.

Haifa is a pretty impressive modern city.

After some pretty tasty late lunch, we started on the last leg of our drive.  What was suppose to take only about an hour, ended up taking about 2 ½.  The traffic was ridiculous, and believe me, as good a driver as Avi is during the day, he scared the bejabbers out of me after the sun went down.  Major up and down, on two lane roads, switching back and forth….my nerves were pretty well frayed by the time we arrived.  But we are settling in our room at the kibbutz right off the Sea of Galilee.
