An Ol' Broad's Ramblings

Playing Tourist On Day 9

As has become the norm, we were up bright and early, rarin’ to go!  After a decent breakfast at the ‘guest house’ of the kibbutz, we’re off.  (Warning: I took a lot of pictures today…be happy I’m not posting ‘em all!  heh)

First stop, the Church of the Beatitudes.

Then, it was on to Capharnaum, also known as the home of Peter.

Peter’s house.

“White Synagogue”.

And what would a trip to Israel be without a trip to Golan Heights?  Well, yeah, we were a bit hesitant, but hey, if Avi says it’s ok, then it must be ok.  It was pretty hazy this morning, so the pictures up there on the top of that hill aren’t all that great, but I’m sure you can get a general idea.  It was high up!  You can still see some of the damage from the war with Syria, who still seems to think that area belongs to them.

Here we have the Useless Numnuts base in “no man’s land”.  The white smudge.

Syria over there in the distance.

Some interesting art work at the spot.  Might be made from old tank parts.

On the drive down the big hill, and north, we made a stop at a fruit stand on the side of the road and bought some amazingly tasty apples.  I had to pass on the goat cheese in olive oil.  How would we get it home?  From this spot, you could see the Fortress of Nimrod, which guarded the road to Damascus, the same road that Paul took on his travels.  I didn’t see any sign of a road, but I’m pretty sure they didn’t have a lot of paving at the time.

We crossed the road to have a bite of lunch.  This was our chef, who made us all a tasty meal of very large, thin, flat bread, goat cheese, zata and olive oil.  It’s very messy, which is why you leave it in the little bag while eating it, but soooooo very GOOOOOD!

The white smudge you see there is the village where my grandparents were born, in Lebanon.  I couldn’t even begin to spell the name, so I’m not going to try.

Unfortunately, our stop at Caesarea Philippi was way too brief.  I’ve yet to figure out why Avi is in such a major rush at the sights we find interesting, yet is all too willing to spend extra time at spots that really don’t do much for us.  Sigh…  Oh well.  He’s still a good guy.

Avi reading from Matthew 16 to the Mr.

I did however convince him I wanted to spent a few more minutes at the Mount of the Beatitudes.  I was able to get a few minutes by myself to pray in the chapel.

Honestly, I’m not sure what the difference it between the Church and the Mount, but they were two different places.

The Mr and Avi decided they were both still hungry, so we stopped in a good sized town so the Mr could get an Israeli hamburger.  I decided to pass, but couldn’t resist snagging a bite of his.  Dang!  That was pretty good.  McDonald’s….eat yer heart out!

Then it was back to the kibbutz and a walk down to the Sea of Galilee, just in time for the sun to make it‘s way behind the hills behind us.

Yes, it was a LONG day.  My feet look like watermelons.
