English-only has its Latino supporters, too
Eddie Garcia’s mother rushed him to a New England hospital when he was 3. An Italian immigrant, she spoke no English, and his Cuban-Chilean father didn’t either.
The lack of communication was traumatizing — until a hospital worker stepped forward to translate. When the family left, Garcia’s mother made a vow.
“She said that would never happen to us again,” Garcia said. “We started to learn English right after that. … No one should depend on a translator. You have to look out for your own interests.”
A lot of mother’s and grandmother’s made a decision to learn the language of the land, mine included. Sadly, those coming to our country these days are expecting US to adapt to THEM, and provide translators, which increases the cost of everything. Learn English. If I move to your country, I would be expected to learn the language to be able to function. This whole argument about whether or not we should insist on English Only is down right absurd. Not knowing the language keeps immigrants from advancing. And if you are illegal? Take your ass home!
Oahu loses power on Obama vacation
Gov. Linda Lingle said Hawaiian Electric Co. was taking an emergency generator to the compound on the east side of the island where Obama has been staying. Lingle said she had asked the utility to notify her when it had been delivered.
Did the electric company deliver generators to the rest of the folks who lost power? Odds are, no. Don’t the Obamas know what flashlights and candles are for? Jeeeez. They call this news?
‘Israeli ministers war criminals’
Arab-Israeli leaders slammed the Israeli assault on Gaza Saturday, referring to it as a “war crime.” Knesset Member Jamal Zahalka, who participated in a rally in Nazareth, called for a general strike by Israel’s Arab community in protest of the operation in Gaza.
“Following this offensive, the world should punish Israel and impose a siege on it, because if the Gaza blockade is the result of the firing, then Israel fired in one day what the Palestinians have fired in five years,” he said.
You’ll have to excuse me while I pick my chin up off the floor. How many Israelis have died? How many have been injured? The Palis lob bombs into schools, blow themselves up in the middle of a crowded Pizza parlour, and it’s Israel that is the bad guy? No no no! If you keep slapping a lion, no matter how tame (civilized), that lion is going to turn around and bite your head off eventually!
