Tennessee Legislature opens session with surprise vote
A Republican took over as Speaker of the House of Representatives today, but not the one anybody expected.
On opening day of the 106th General Assembly, Democrats outmaneuvered Republicans to seat Kent Williams, a Republican who is apparently sympathetic to Democrats and was immediately branded by the GOP as a liar who betrayed his party and his constituents.
Williams, R-Carter County, voted for himself in the surprise speaker election and got all 49 Democratic votes, edging him over Jason Mumpower, R-Bristol.
He is the first Republican speaker in 40 years, but it was a stunning upset for the GOP, who booed loudly.
Mumpower was widely expected to garner all 50 Republican votes and take over the Republican Speaker post from Jimmy Naifeh, D-Covington, who has held the post since 1991. He had gotten pledges from all 50 Republicans shortly after the Nov. 4 election that they would vote for a Republican speaker.
Wait a minute! You mean to tell me a politician fudged on his word? STOP THE PRESSES! 
I hate to say this, but the voters have been screwed over for more years I care to count. Why should now be any different? I’ll be perfectly honest, I had never even heard of this guy before this evening, but the impression I got was that he was not real well liked.
But the pledge did not specify who that Republican should be. According to a text of the pledge, the House Republican Caucus members committed only to “vote for a Republican for Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives” as well as a Republican Speaker Pro Tempore.
Williams apparently sided with Democrats who knew that Naifeh could not pull in the one Republican vote he needed to keep his post.
Ok, here’s my question. If this guy is a RINO, why didn’t he just vote for the Dem Naifeh? Well, it seems to me, it’s not about the state, or representing the people of the state. It appears his vote for himself was all about, well…..him!
During the proceedings, Republicans nominated Mumpower and called for an end to the nominations. Gary Odom, D-Nashville, challenged the motions and made the surprise nomination of Williams. Then, all 49 Democrats voted for Williams — and so did he, to the dismay of the rest of the GOP. Naifeh called the vote official, and Williams took his oath.
He was elected by the folks over there in Carter County as a Republican. When he voted with the Dhimmis, even if it was for himself, he betrayed his constituents. I’ll grant you, I’m still learning about Tennessee politics, but there’s right, and there’s wrong. And IMHO, what this weasel did was just plain wrong. It’s not about party loyalty in my book. The Republicans won the majority, but the Dems are still in control. With their puppet, Williams, at the head.
Ya know these people are pure scum and there is not much that can be done about it at this juncture, these people seem intent on running the country into the ground so we’re all out here penniless and therefore helpless and at their mercy. Doesn’t look good right now any way we slice this up.
I’m seriously starting to wonder if all the standing in line to vote makes a bit of difference any more.
Looking at where we stand today with this pathetic crap we’re looking at today in government across the country I’d say not anymore. We couldn’t do any worse than this if we tried.
Oh, I dunno. I have a bad feeling it IS going to get a whole lot worse.
Thats what keeps us out here trying to stop I guess, lets pray it works somehow little by little, gotta be better than doin nothing/ :>)
Well, as long as we’re allowed to speak our minds, I guess we have to. What are the odds that at some point in the not too distant future, you and I will be charged with a “hate crime”?

No, BO is definitely not working for us. He’s working for the ‘one world’ idea, as you can tell by the cabinet choices he’s made! I’ll keep plodding on until I just can’t see the point anymore, or I have nothing to say.
