Gun-permit records may be closed

Tennessee lawmakers are ready again to try to muzzle state records that list who has a permit to carry a concealed handgun, and this time they are considering making it a crime to publish information about gun ownership.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Eddie Bass, D-Prospect, would make information on gun permit holders confidential and exempt from the state’s open records law. The bill is scheduled for a hearing today by the House Criminal Practice Subcommittee.

For 12 years, similar legislation has failed to make it to a floor vote, but this year’s version has a new twist and a better chance of passage now that Democrats who previously blocked the bill, including former Speaker Jimmy Naifeh, no longer control the House.

I’m not sure if they were trying to be amusing by using the word “muzzle” or not. Whatever. This is GOOD news, as far as I’m concerned. Would you want all of YOUR information put out there on a news website? Well, I wouldn’t. I’m really hoping that they can get this bill passed. It’s one thing to be on a government ‘open records’ site, it’s a whole other ballgame when a so called newspaper does it.

UAW boss backs Ford contract concessions

Ford has used up $21 billion of its cash reserves last year, Gettelfinger said in the letter.

“The company cannot continue to sustain this level of losses and stay in business,” he wrote.

Ford mortgaged all its assets to borrow roughly $25 billion and has been able to avoid taking government loans, unlike its U.S. competitors, Chrysler LLC and General Motors Corp.,

With U.S. auto sales running at an annual rate as low as 9 million to 10 million units, down from 16 million or 17 million in past years, “no auto company, including the transplants, can continue operations without significant modifications,” he wrote.

I’m wondering if this particular union guy has more sense then many of the others? If the company goes under because they can’t pay the outrageous packages, then the workers will not have ANY package at all, as in NO JOB! It’s sad that there are so many these days who can’t get past that gimme mentality.

‘Day of Reckoning’

President Obama offered a grim portrait of America’s plight in an address to a joint session of Congress last night, but he promised to lead an economic renewal that would lift the country out of its current crisis without bankrupting its future.

Striking an optimistic tone that has been absent from his speeches in recent weeks, the president said his stimulus plan, bank bailout proposal, housing programs and health-care overhaul would work in concert to turn around the nation’s struggling economy. And while he bluntly described a country beset by historic economic challenges and continued threats abroad, he said the solution lies in directly confronting — not ignoring — those problems.

For a guy so full of supposed “hope and change”, he’s ALWAYS painting a grim picture. Jeeez. He’s not giving folks encouragement, or hope, or much of anything but a bill no one can pay. Hint for B. Hussein: When you don’t have a hammer, don’t try to drive the nail. You can’t fix a leak with a rubber band. There’s more, but you get the picture. Seriously, would you call a plumber who broke all your pipes, to come and fix it? Uh….no. So, why does the gubmint think they have the solutions to the problems they created?

MSNBC anchors introduce Jindal with exclamation of ‘Oh God’

“Chris [Matthews], stand by, Rachel [Maddow], stand by, we’re getting that cue from Baton Rouge where Governor Jindal of Louisiana is set to deliver the Republican response to President Obama. It is entitled ‘Americans Can Do Anything.’ Here’s Governor Jindal,” Olbermann said.

As the picture showed Jindal walking toward the camera, a hushed voice-believed to be Olbermann’s or Matthews’-said, “Oh God” as others were heard laughing in the background.

Yes, with their usual lack of class, once again, the folks at PMSNBC proves their irrelevance.

Iran tests its first nuclear power plant

Iranian and Russian technicians are conducting a test run of Iran’s first nuclear power plant, officials said Wednesday, a major step toward launching full operations at the facility, which has long raised concerns in the U.S. and its allies over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

At the same time, Iran claimed another advance in its nuclear program: The number of centrifuges carrying out uranium enrichment had increased to 6,000, the country’s nuclear chief said—up from 5,000 in November.

His announcement was the latest defiance of United Nations’ demands that Tehran suspend its enrichment program because of fears it could be used to produce material for a warhead. Iran denies it seeks to build a nuclear bomb, saying its nuclear program aims only to generate electricity.

What a shame the thing doesn’t blow up on ‘em. :? Only to generate electricity? Well, I guess that’s like saying “I’m buying a shotgun, just to put over the mantle.”  Didn’t we hear from Bush, the Useless Numnuts, AND The One, that Iran must not get nuclear technology?  Didn’t we hear that, or was I hallucinating?  Well, I guess they didn’t listen, eh?

2 rockets hit western Negev

Despite Hamas’ declaration of a ceasefire following Operation Cast Lead, Palestinian gunmen have continued firing several rockets and mortar shells almost every day, making life very difficult for southern Israel’s residents.

The Israel Defense Forces has responded to these rockets by bombing Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, including weapon smuggling tunnels.

Yeah, so tell me again about this ‘cease fire’? And all you bloggers that have pro palie banners up? Do you still believe they are the ‘good guys’? Yeah…probably. A rather sad, and clueless bunch.

Hearst wants ‘significant’ cuts at Chronicle

The Hearst Corp. on Tuesday announced an effort to reverse the deepening operating losses of its San Francisco Chronicle by seeking near-term cost savings that would include “significant” cuts to both union and nonunion staff.

In a statement, Hearst said that if the savings cannot be accomplished “quickly,” the company will seek a buyer, and if none comes forward, it will close The Chronicle. The Chronicle lost more than $50 million in 2008 and is on a pace to lose more than that this year, Hearst said.

Aw man! They can’t shut down the SF Chronicle. What would I read for comic relief?? Dang.

    RE the gun proposal:

I think it would be a good idea for all people. Gun lovers, like yourself, would get free advertising for the bad guys to leave you alone.

It would also give warning to those of us that prefer a different route of self-protection to avoid these places as well.

And as for your info on the website, mine has been for years, without my permission, just because of my job. I’m not happy about it either, but what is good for the goose…

  2. olbroad. 26 February 2009, 8:02 am

Did the newspaper put up your info? Or, is it through a government website? Do you work for the government, or are you a private citizen, working for a private company? There are differences y’know.

If you (general, not you specifically) are working for “We, The People”, then according to open gubmiint type things, then yeah, odds are, you’re info is going to be out there.

Concealed carry permit holders, for the most part, are just private citizens. For a paper like the Appeal to put the info out there….. Well, have you ever been to Memphis? Considering the violence there, I’m really surprised there aren’t MORE folks who carry….LEGALLY. Heaven knows, there are enough carrying ILLEGALLY. Think Chicago style violence with a Southern accent.

Since you aren’t typically of the criminal mind, why would you worry about who was carrying what? :?

  3. capper. 26 February 2009, 11:02 pm

Both actually. I do work for the government (don’t you read my site? ;) )

As for the CCW folks, well, let’s just say I don’t have as much faith as you do in their ability and/or self-control. Like, I’ve always said, it is better to know where the potential problems are, then finding out the hard way.

  4. olbroad. 27 February 2009, 7:34 am

Yes, goofball, I do read your site. :P

Obviously, you are buying to a bit of propaganda. SHOCKER! Yes, there are a VERY few with permits that go off the deep end, but the vast majority are law abiding citizens, likely to save your hind end if you come up against someone meaning to do you harm. If you aren’t out to cause trouble, then you have nothing to worry about. The bad guys are likely to steer clear of folks they KNOW are possibly armed, and target those they know are not. Wouldn’t it be better if they assumed EVERYONE was armed. :)

  5. capper. 27 February 2009, 7:40 am

Actually, I don’t read the propaganda. I just read the news, and can’t make it a day without seeing one of your law abiding citizens stop being just that and someone gets hurt and/or killed.

And I am just as afraid of some would-be Dirty Harry or Charles Bronson shooting me in the hinder, even if they were trying to save it.

I’d rather have the troubles in front of me where I can deal with it, and not have to worry about some nut job with a hero complex.

  6. olbroad. 27 February 2009, 7:53 am

LMAO You really must broaden your horizons. How many people do you know that carry? Well, you being in WI and all, I’d say not a whole lot, eh? And what do you think the “news” is these days?

Hon, it IS propaganda. Journalism is dead. It’s all opinion. “I don’t like guns, so I’m going to slant this story to support my view.” Pfft.

  7. capper. 27 February 2009, 11:06 pm

Don’t insult my intelligence. I most definitely can read between the lines and pick out the factual statements, from either the right or the left.

And you do know that I do have a farmer’s armament, right? It’s just I know them to be tools. I don’t get any more excited about them than I do my hammer or sander.

(My riding mower, well, that’s just different. :) )

  8. olbroad. 27 February 2009, 11:13 pm

Unfortunately capper, there is no ‘between the lines’ in today’s main stream media. They flat out skewer. And I do not insult your intelligence. I just see you as a smart, misguided, fellow that lives in an extremely liberal state, and state of mind. :)

Hey…that riding lawn mower can do some serious damage….especially if ya put a yahoo like me on one. Now THAT is frightening!

  9. capper. 27 February 2009, 11:21 pm

Especially this one, which I fondly call “the Lameauni”.

It is as tough as nails, I tell you: http://folkbum.blogspot.com/2008/03/two-steps-forward-one-step-back.html

Well, son of a biscuit eater! Ever consider escaping Taxconsin? Nature is going to win….every single time! And it looks like it won with you….100- nuthin’! Just glad you were IN the garage. And glad the Mrs was ok too.

  11. capper. 1 March 2009, 12:18 am

I couldn’t leave. I was in Florida in December once. I couldn’t wrap my poor pea brain around wicker reindeer and Christmas palm trees, while wearing shorts. I need the seasons.

The bright side is that it lowered the taxes by $200.

  12. olbroad. 1 March 2009, 9:49 am

You do realize there are quite a few states between Florida and Taxconsin that actually do have all four seasons, right? Heh.

We moved here, our property taxes were cut 3/4. Now THAT is some serious saving. :) More house, more land….more money. I like that idea.
