WASHINGTON – It didn’t take long forto shoot herself in the foot or for Republicans to make her a target of their opposition to Obama administration policy.
At the heart of the GOP criticism is a recent intelligence analysis from Napolitano’s agency saying veterans returning from Iraq or could be susceptible to right-wing recruiters or commit lone acts of violence.
When conservative bloggers began writing about the report, Napolitano defended the assessment while acknowledging that some of it should have been rewritten. She went on a number of television news shows to apologize and explain her support for and admiration of veterans.
This was not enough for several Republicans who took to the House floor this week to criticize Napolitano, confirmed to her Cabinet position less than 100 days ago.
“Has this homeland security secretary gone absolutely stark raving mad?” said Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn. “She needs to come before Congress. She needs to answer a few questions.”
On Thursday, Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Texas, told Fox News that Napolitano must not understand “the disruption that she has caused” in some parts of the country. “I think the appropriate thing for her to do would be to step down,” he said.
A day earlier, Rep. John Carter, R-Texas, said, “Janet Napolitano should resign or be fired.”
Obama administration aides dismissed the criticism as a “typical Washington game” and “political theater.”
Despite the furor among some Republicans, party leaders did not bring it up in a meeting with President Barack Obama and top White House aides on Thursday. Although had indicated earlier it likely would be discussed, his spokesman, Kevin Smith, said the topic was not broached.
White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said the right-wing extremist report originated in the Bush administration and Napolitano was working to keep the nation safe from terrorists.
“She doesn’t have time for these games — and neither does the president,” Shapiro said.
The veterans issue wasn’t the only flap. Earlier this week, Napolitano drew criticism for flubbing an explanation of federal law prohibiting people without proper documents from crossing U.S. borders into the country.
In an interview with CNN, Napolitano, whose career has included stints as a U.S. attorney and attorney general and governor of Arizona, said: “Crossing the border is not a crime per se. It is civil.”
While crossing the border illegally is a crime, most illegal immigrants caught in the United States face only civil penalties and deportation.
Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., characterized Napolitano’s statements as one of the most “baffling” he has ever heard from a senior government official.
“It is breathtaking that a Cabinet secretary, bestowed by the public with the responsibility to protect our nation’s borders, could be ignorant of the indisputable fact that it is a violation of the criminal code to enter our country illegally,” Sessions said.
Napolitano spokesman Sean Smith said: “She may be new to Washington, but she has been around politics for a long time, and she knows political theater when she sees it.”
Smith said Napolitano spent 16 years enforcing the law on the Southwest border. “Americans can rest assured that she understands what the law is along the border,” he said.
She also has drawn criticism for claiming in an interview that the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists entered the U.S. across the Canadian border. The 9/11 Commission found that none came through Canada. But others have, such as the would-be millennium bomber Ahmed Ressam.
Discussing security along the U.S. border on Canada’s CBC News on Monday, Napolitano said, “To the extent that terrorists have come into our country or suspected or known terrorists have entered our country across a border, it’s been across the Canadian border. There are real issues there.”
When asked whether she was talking about the 9/11 terrorists, Napolitano said: “Not just those, but others as well.”
Smith on Thursday said Napolitano acknowledged she misspoke and had been thinking of the millennium bomber.

I originally posted this over at Silent E Speaks this morning. I usually keep the local stuff over there, but this so bothered me I wanted as many people as possible to know about it. It is about the most aggregious lack of human decency I’ve seen in quite some time….
When I first heard about this story, I thought there was some mix-up in paperwork, but sadly, that is not the case.
Danielle Eckert’s son Colin Byars was murdered in February. Now the property manager at his old apartment is demanding rent for March and April….saying Colin didn’t give 30 days notice that he would be leaving.
Danielle can’t believe it.
“I said, ‘How is he supposed to send a 30 days notice, when he didn’t even know he was going to get killed?’ ” said Danielle.
The letter from CCRT Properties is addressed to the estate of Colin Byars, and his roommate Robert Macedo. Property manager Debbie Marko wants two months rent, late fees, and an extra $660.00 for early termination of the lease — a grand total of $2060.00.
But Macedo says the lease actually clears them of any fees: “It was in writing that if Colin should leave, I would have to leave as well.”
But CCRT Properties is insisting on the money and told Danielle they’ve already contacted their corporate attorney.
The company had no comment.
It’s all left Colin Byars family frustrated. “The money is not as big a deal,” said Danielle. “It’s the principal.”
Unbelievable!! It’s bad enough that they’re trying to collect the rent, but early termination fee for not giving a 30 day notice?? Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot. (Sorry for stealing that Chad, but it’s so appropriate) I don’t know of many murder victims who, thirty days prior to their murder, are aware of the fact that they will be assuming room temperature.
Aside from the fact that this is positively amoral, legally, there may not be much that the company can do. Sure, they can try to sue his estate, but as a young school teacher, I doubt he has much of an estate. In addition, in many cases once a party to a contract dies, the contract becomes null and void.
All that aside, what the hell is wrong with people? I understand that we are in a bad economy, but did this company not realize the horrendous publicity it would receive? I would be quite surprised if they didn’t reverse themselves, but the damage is done. Good grief!
You just can’t make this stuff up.
Is DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano really this ignorant?
Typical Washington Games? Political Theater?? Seriously? She said what she said, and in the process, made an absolute fool of herself. Oh. Wait. I forgot – it’s Bush’s fault. Puleez. When, oh when, will they stop that already??
With all the missteps this administration has made so far, we are becoming the laughingstock of the world. One hand doesn’t know what the other is doing, and the head of the Department of Homeland Security is absolutely clueless. I don’t know about you, but that certainly doesn’t make ME feel very secure.
Dissenting views need not apply…
Washington, DC – UK’s Lord Christopher Monckton, a former science advisor to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, claimed House Democrats have refused to allow him to appear alongside former Vice President Al Gore at a high profile global warming hearing on Friday April 24, 2009 at 10am in Washington. Monckton told Climate Depot that the Democrats rescinded his scheduled joint appearance at the House Energy and Commerce hearing on Friday. Monckton said he was informed that he would not be allowed to testify alongside Gore when his plane landed from England Thursday afternoon.
“The House Democrats don’t want Gore humiliated, so they slammed the door of the Capitol in my face,” Monckton told Climate Depot in an exclusive interview. “They are cowards.”
According to Monckton, Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas), Ranking Member on the Energy & Commerce Committee, had invited him to go head to head with Gore and testify at the hearing on Capitol Hill Friday. But Monckton now says that when his airplane from London landed in the U.S. on Thursday, he was informed that the former Vice-President had “chickened out” and there would be no joint appearance. Gore is scheduled to testify on Friday to the Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment’s fourth day of hearings on the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. The hearing will be held in 2123 Rayburn House Office Building.
According to Monckton, House Democrats told the Republican committee staff earlier this week that they would be putting forward an unnamed ‘celebrity’ as their star witness Friday at a multi-panel climate hearing examining the House global warming bill. The “celebrity” witness turned out to be Gore. Monckton said the GOP replied they would respond to the Democrats’ “celebrity” with an unnamed “celebrity” of their own. But Monckton claims that when the Democrats were told who the GOP witness would be, they refused to allow him to testify alongside Gore.
[ Update: 1:55 PM EST: A GOP House source told Climate Depot that the Democrats on the Committee said “absolutely not” to allowing Monckton to appear during today’s Gore hearing. The GOP committee “pushed at multiple levels” to bring Monckton in to testify but the Democrats “refused,” according to the GOP source. Former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich was called in to testify after Monckton was rejected by the committee Democrats, according to the Congressional source.]
Yup – that’s fair and balanced all right. Why in the WORLD does anyone still drink the global warming kool-aid?? It is patently obvious that they want what they want and they want it now. Facts? Bah – we don’t need no stinkin’ facts!! Heaven forbid anyone dispute the King of Global Warming/Climate Change/Whatever they’re going to call it next. Good grief!!
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she was never told during a congressional briefing in 2002 that waterboarding or other “enhanced” interrogation techniques were being used on terrorism suspects.
But in a story published in the Washington Post in December 2007, two officials were quoted saying that the California Democrat and three other lawmakers had received an hour-long secret briefing on the interrogation tactics, including waterboarding, and that they raised no objections at the time.
The clash of accounts has stirred Republican claims that Democrats have selective and politically motivated amnesia when it comes to who knew what, and when, about the Bush-era interrogation programs.
“I saw a partial list of the number of members of the House and Senate, Democrats and Republicans, who were briefed on these interrogation methods, and not a word was raised at the time, not one word,” House Minority Leader John Boehner said Thursday.
It’s no secret around here….I do not like SanFranNan. I honestly believe that woman is evil.
Time and time again, there has been proof that Pelosi has “mis-spoke”. Let’s call it what it is…..LIE! Either she is the most incompetent person on the planet, next to her bud Barack, of course, or she diliberately forgets there is a little thing called the internet, video, archives and such, that people can search out, and discover the truth.
In September 2002, four members of Congress met in secret for a first look at a unique CIA program designed to wring vital information from reticent terrorism suspects in U.S. custody. For more than an hour, the bipartisan group, which included current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was given a virtual tour of the CIA’s overseas detention sites and the harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk.
Let’s face it. All politicians play their stupid game, ‘cover it up’, with their constituents. However, I see the Dhimmicrats taking it to a whole new level, at the bottom of the sewer. Are the people in California’s 11th Congressional district so utterly oblivious, or do they actually believe this……woman…..has the best interest of their district, and the country, at heart? Either way, she MUST go. And soon! She’s an embarrassment to women the world over!
