Senate advances bill to regulate tobacco

The Senate took a step Tuesday toward giving the government some controls over the tobacco industry, bolstering the chances that a long-sought goal of anti-smoking advocates will finally be realized.

The 84-11 Senate vote to consider the bill came a month after the House overwhelmingly passed a similar measure giving the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Ok, can we back up here just a minute? Let’s see, the taxes from tobacco sales are supposedly “ear marked” for health care for “the chiiiiiilruns”, right? Didn’t we just have an extra buck per pack added for just that reason? And now, the Senate, who can’t even balance a freakin’ checkbook want to get into the tobacco business? Let’s see, banks, cars, your health care, and now tobacco. And they have screwed up every single thing they touch. Is this really such a good idea?

There are 4 versions of Bill Number H.R.1256 for the 111th Congress

1 . Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (Introduced in House)[H.R.1256.IH]
2 . Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (Reported in House)[H.R.1256.RH]
3 . To protect the public health by providing the Food and Drug Administration with certain authority to regulate tobacco products, to amend title 5, United States Code, to make certain… (Engrossed as Agreed to or Passed by House)[H.R.1256.EH]
4 . To protect the public health by providing the Food and Drug Administration with certain authority to regulate tobacco products, to amend title 5, United States Code, to make certain… (Placed on Calendar in Senate)[H.R.1256.PCS]

Who is going to pay for the health care once the gubmint gets their hands on another private business?  Does ANYONE in Washington, D.C. have an ounce of common sense?  Do any of them have a clue how to create, rather than destroy?

Under the measure, the FDA could restrict tobacco marketing, specifically to young people; order changes to the ingredients in tobacco products; and require more prominent health warnings. It would ban remaining tobacco-brand sponsorships of sports and entertainment events and restrict vending machines to adult-only facilities. It would bar the use of “reduced harm” descriptions such as “light,” “mild” or “low.”

For one thing, we already have LAWS that prevents the sell of any tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18.  There are already health warnings on every single pack.  Ban sponsorship?  More invasion of privacy.  That is NONE of their freakin’ business.

It would impose a fee on cigarette manufacturers to pay for FDA regulation.

Said fee would be passed along to those adults who purchase their product. Do they really believe that the companies will take those fees out of their profits? Pfft!  Companies are in business to make profits.  If they don’t make profits, they don’t stay in business.

The FDA would not have the authority to ban cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Well, isn’t that nice. They forgot to include the word “YET”.

Opponents from tobacco-growing states have expressed concerns about job losses in their states and contended that the FDA has a poor track record in guaranteeing food safety and shouldn’t be given responsibility to oversee tobacco products. Among the amendments that could be offered in the Senate are proposals to instead assign tobacco regulation to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hey….job losses. Well now, that’s something the government is REAL good at insuring, aren’t they. Screwing up business to the tune of about a half million jobs lost a month. Yep, they can do that.

This isn’t about tobacco.  This isn’t about smokers.  This is about relinquishing more control to the federal government they have NO right to have, under any circumstance.  No where in the U.S. Constitution does it state that the governing body are allowed to take over a privately owned business, but that sure hasn’t stopped them, has it.

Obama Justice Department Decision Will Allow Non-Citizens to Register to Vote in Georgia

Atlanta – “The decision by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to deny preclearance of Georgia’s already implemented citizenship verification process shows a shocking disregard for the integrity of our elections. With this decision, DOJ has now barred Georgia from continuing the citizenship verification program that DOJ lawyers helped to craft. DOJ’s decision also nullifies the orders of two federal courts directing Georgia to implement the procedure for the 2008 general election. The decision comes seven months after Georgia requested an expedited review of the preclearance submission.

DOJ has thrown open the door for activist organizations such as ACORN to register non-citizens to vote in Georgia’s elections, and the state has no ability to verify an applicant’s citizenship status or whether the individual even exists. DOJ completely disregarded Georgia’s obvious and direct interest in preventing non-citizens from voting, instead siding with the ACLU and MALDEF. Clearly, politics took priority over common sense and good public policy.

“This process is critical to protecting the integrity of our elections. We have evidence that non-citizens have voted in past Georgia elections and that more than 2,100 individuals have attempted to register, yet still have questions regarding their citizenship. Further, the Inspector General’s office is investigating more than 30 cases of non-citizens casting ballots in Georgia elections, including the case of a Henry County non-citizen who registered to vote and cast ballots in 2004 and 2006.

“It is important to underscore that not a single person has come forward to say he or she could not vote because of the verification process. Further, while DOJ argues that the process is somehow discriminatory, the historic voter turnout among Hispanic and African-American voters in the 2008 general elections clearly says otherwise.

Whoa! WHOA! FREAKIN’ WHOA! I can NOT be reading this right! The justice dept is basically saying it’s just peachy for NON citizens to vote in our elections? I must be mistaken. Could anything with the word ‘justice’ in it’s name be so blatantly ignorant of the law?  I won’t even get into the fact that the ACLU is constantly undermining the law, and with this action, you are being told you, as a legal citizen of the United States of America, obeying the law, mean NOTHING!

Amendment XV

Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Citizens!  Not visitors, not sneaky little bastards who broke the law get in the country…..C-I-T-I-Z-E-N-S!  We no longer prohibit people from voting, unlike some of the old Southern Democrats did prior to the Voting Rights Acts.  Yes, please notice it was the DEMOCRATS that prevented legal aged people of color, from voting.  Now, those same types of Democrats not only claim the black vote, they also want possible illegals to vote for them too?

In 1975, the special provisions of the Voting Rights Act were extended for another seven years, and were broadened to address voting discrimination against members of “language minority groups.” (source)

Language minority groups?  You mean people who don’t have a working knowledge of the language in which the majority of this country runs?  I have issues with this.  If you don’t understand the language, how can you make a reasoned, well thought out decision for whom to vote?

The federal government, once again, is stepping in where it has no business stepping.  The state of Georgia has been doing exactly what ever other state SHOULD be doing….verifying the legal status of its voters.  This is not difficult to understand.  If we are a land of laws, then shouldn’t we obey those laws?  This includes making sure that people who vote in our elections, are LEGALLY eligible to vote!

CNN’s Wingnut of the Week

This week the House is set to debate the “Federal Employees Paid Parental Leave Act of 2009” which would provide 4 weeks of PAID leave to federal government workers. At a time when public sector employees are already seeing their wages rise while private sector workers deal with the recession, bill sponsor Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) has the audacity to claim that the bill is revenue neutral. That claim inspired CNN to dub her the “Wingnut of the Week.” Watch:

I don’t even know what to say about this, other than…..HAS THE WHOLE FREAKIN’ WORLD GONE MAD???????  Do they really believe we are so stupid?  Well, yeah…they do, and odds are, we must be, because it is us that keep sending morons like this back to office, with our votes.  I’m honestly starting to wonder if we are actually voting at all, or just putting little marks on pieces of paper that automatically get sent through the shredder?

Close the Golden Door!
By: J. D. Longstreet

The Obama Administration has been excellent at keeping a crisis of some kind ongoing in the US while they continue to get their crash socialist programs through the Congress and made into law before the American people figure out what hit us. It’s called “mis-direction.” Magicians use it all the time. The reason Magicians and politicians use it – because it works!

When The Obama people run out of crises and the smoke clears a little and the American people begin to get a look through the low hanging mist, there are going to be a lot of jaws dropping and dragging the floor. In fact, it has already begun.

It is sometimes known as “Buyer’s Remorse.” You know, its that sinking feeling you get after you get home from a shopping trip with something you felt at the time the salesman was pitching it to you that you absolutely must have. Now that you are home with that item, which is now ALL YOURS, you realize, you really didn’t need it at all! In fact, you don’t even want the “cussed thing”, but. – Now you OWN IT! That is Buyer’s Remorse.

That is what a lot of Obama supporters are feeling these days. It is certainly not because we conservatives didn’t warn them, we did, loud and clear and long, we warned them. Too late, they discovered we actually DID know what we were talking about. But, as I said, it is too late.

Read the rest here!

While reading J.D.’s post, I had this image of a young kindergarten teacher, with four and five year olds running wild, yelling, throwing stuff, totoally out of control, her being overwhelmed with little hooligans, all the while, more and more are pouring through the door.  While the U.S. is not a kindergarten class, and we are not the poor teacher, we have still become overwhelmed with the invasion, of both legal, and illegal, immigrants.  We need to close the door!  Just as that poor teacher could go off the deep end if control is not restored, odds are, so could we.  There is no reason for use not to have control of our borders.  Absolutely NO reason we can’t say who comes in, and who doesn’t get access to our crayons (health care, social programs, etc.).

Yes, this is a rather simplistic way to express the frustration many of us are feeling, but if you’ve ever dealt with a large number of children, by yourself, you’ll understand.  While those who keep pouring through the door are not children, but adults, at least chronilogically, the result has become the same.  Chaos.  We have to be the grown up who says NO.  No more.  We need a break.  We need to assimilate those who are here legally into OUR culture, and send those who snuck in the back door, breaking our laws, packing.  We can no longer afford to take in EVERYONE.  If the morons in D.C. can’t figure that out, then it’s past time to send THEM packing as well.
