An Ol’ Broad’s Ramblings
It’s Friday Afternoon, Must Be Bad News
Obama team makes it official: Budget deficit hits record. By a lot.
The Obama administration has released new deficit numbers, and they are not pretty.
The deficit for Fiscal Year 2009, which ended Sept. 30, came in at a record $1.42 trillion, more than triple the record set just last year.
In addition, future deficits are currently projected to total $9.1 trillion in the coming decade.
I can hear it now….it’s all Bush’s fault! Um…. Bush hasn’t been in office for nearly 10 months now. When is everything going to stop being his fault?
Republicans cited record deficits as another reason to oppose Obama’s health care plan and other big projects. “No more spending money we don’t have,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
Rep. John Spratt, D-S.C., countered that, “today’s figures are a result of the policies of the Bush Administration, along with the cost of actions needed to address the recession and prevent even deeper economic problems.”
A year ago, as the financial crisis hit and the Bush administration prepared massive bailout plans, the deficit was $455 billion.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Bush seriously screwed up with the first bailout BS. It sure didn’t help the economic situation. No, all it did was open the door to more of the same. Bush should have let those companies he was supposedly trying to aid fall flat on their over bloated faces.
“This year’s deficit is lower than we had projected earlier this year, in part because we are managing to repair the financial system at a lower cost to taxpayers,” said a statement from Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. “But future deficits are too high, and the President is committed to working with Congress to bring them down to a sustainable level as the economy recovers.”
Lower? Gee, how comforting. If the POTUS was serious about working with Congress, he’d be working with ALL members of Congress and not just the ones kissing his….. ring. The Democrats may have a majority, for now, but they aren’t the only elected officials in D.C. Shutting out the other party doesn’t make him, or the Dem “leadership”, look very mature, or wise. It actually makes them appear like petulant children.
One thing to remember: They are spending the money. YOU are paying the bills. Just think of it this way…someone stole all your credit cards, has access to your checkbook, and has gone on a massive spending spree. They’re having a high ol’ time, and you are living in a cardboard box, paying for it.

As a liberal, I must say that it wasn’t like Republicans were listening to any of us for the first 6 years of Bush and the last 2 of Clinton.
While I agree with some of your points about the bailouts I just want to make sure that you realize that your quote above, applies to republicans as well.
By calling people who act with out listening or even considering the opposition “petulant children,” you have called the republicans petulant children as well.
Maybe in the future we can have debates without trying to vilify people who are on the same side, after all, we all just want to make our country better.
Maybe when republicans stop calling liberal names, maybe people would listen to them more. In real life though, it is probably the other way around.
I have no problem calling out the Republicans when they behave like spoiled children. However, I do not remember, nor could I find any reference to the Democrats being shut out of the political process during the 8 years of which you speak. If you have a link or something, I’d be more than happy to check it out.
I’m not sure what you consider ‘making our country better’. Better than what? The foundations of this nation were pretty dadburn good to start with, I see no reason to go down the road to socialism. I rather like the U.S. Constitution, and would appreciate those in D.C. to stop using it as toilet paper.
As for that Republicans and name calling? Are you freakin’ serious?????? And by the way, I’m not a Republican. I tend to call weasels, weasels, no matter what side of the political spectrum. These days, the biggest weasels are on the LEFT side.
To answer your question about being shut out. The stem cell debate and timetable for an exit strategy from Iraq would be another. I would also say the Patriot act is another, but Democrats went along with that one.
On socialism, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but we have been socialist since 1948. Before then we were a starving dying country.
By the definition of socialism; if you sit down at a table with people and all of you order a single pizza to share, and then you split the bill, you are a socialist.
The government has subsidized even our food. They currently subsidize health care. This means that our current insurance companies make a profit because the socialism, I mean taxes subsidize them. We already pay for socialized medicine because they give them tax payer dollars, then they still charge us and refuse treatment, even though we already give them our money.
Capitalism only works with socialism and neither work by themselves. Just look at Mexico, that a pretty darn capitalist place, and it sucks ass. There are many examples like Mexico and they are all third world countries.
Here is a challenge. Show me an example of a solely Capitalist country that has any economic power in the world, and a standing army, and educated citizens.
Even if we were hunter gatherer tribes, we would still be socialist because we would share in the kill.
If you have a country that is Capitalist but has no forms of socialism, then you have a country that is ruled and own by corporations and that is defined as Fascism, you know, Hitler.
Sorry to rant all over your blog, but I am sick of hearing the boogy-man word “socialism” being pushed, when people are confusing it with Communism, and they are very different things.
By the way, You might want to get a better comment system. It is driving me crazy that I can’t fix my grammar errors.
I happen to like my comment system, but because someone from the left says it’s not good enough for them, I should change it, right? Pfft!
In answer to your question: this country, BEFORE the left started the erosion of the Constitution. And to a degree, many years since. We have ups and down, but we have never been a failure, till now.
Your examples of socialism (pizza) don’t ring true. No one is forcing you to eat pizza. You choose to share the cost. Key word: CHOOSE.
Please don’t politicize my comment system comment. That comment is coming from a fellow blogger. It has nothing to do with politics. I was just giving you friendly feedback. I made that suggestion, because I thought it would encourage more people to comment if they can fix mistakes. It was the same reason I gave you a digg.
At this point we should just agree to disagree. I mean we can’t even agree about how our country was dying pre-1948. I mean you just said that the great depression, was good time. So on that note, I bid you farewell and look froward to your next blog post.
Yes, I checked out your blog. ’nuff said. And I wasn’t being political in my response. You are left, and I right.
What prolonged the Depression? And no, I don’t think it was a good time, although, if you heard the stories my dad had to tell, they had a great time. They didn’t know they were poor, and they worked hard, but that’s neither here nor there.
Government intervention made a bad time, a WHOLE lot worse. Hoover screwed up, and Roosevelt took it to the goal line. Pretty much kind of the current situation. Bush screwed up, and Obama is going out of his way to turn us into USSA.
