Senate Votes for Cloture on Hamilton; Sessions Loses on Filibuster
The Senate just voted 70 – 29 for cloture, meaning the nomination of David Hamilton to the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit will receive an up-or-down vote. The vote for cloture was a victory for the Obama administration and Senate Democrats who sought to push the nomination forward, and a loss for Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, who tried to block cloture and keep a vote from coming to the Senate floor.
The official roll call hasn’t been posted yet, but according to People for the American Way, which has been following the Hamilton nomination closely and pushing for a vote, the following ten Republican Senators voted with all Democrats to support cloture: Lamar Alexander (Tenn.), Saxby Chambliss (Ga.), John Cornyn (Texas), Orrin Hatch (Utah), Richard Lugar (Ind.), John Thune (S.D.), Judd Gregg (N.H.), Olympia Snowe (Maine), Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska).
I’m not real sure what to think of this. I know there are a great many people in Tennessee who are REAL unhappy with Alexander. I seriously doubt this will make him more popular with the folks. Hamilton has no business being a judge, period, much less on a Court of Appeals.
When I see people like Thune and Cornyn voting with the likes of Snowe and Collins, I question their motives.

kate, john thune is one of my fb “friends” just left him a message asking how he could vote for this guy. thanks for keeping us informed. dede
We sent him money, thinking he was more conservative.
The vote was for cloture, which will lead to the actual vote. Sessions did his best to shut down the guy, and should have been backed by every single Republican.
Don’t ask my mom about Alexander unless you want an earful! I grew up in TN and USED to think he was a conservative. I said something about him to my mom recently and she unloaded about him! I’m a proud Sessions supporter and voter and just glad that we’ve been able to keep him in there to fight for us.
Thune did this???
Wow…okay, it really is time to throw every last one of them out.
I’m inclined to agree cg.
