An Ol' Broad's Ramblings

Harry Reid – Clueless

Let’s take a look see at just how accurate Runnin’ Reid’s statement actually is, shall we? History is a funny thing, don’cha know.

Soon after the war ended, it was a Republican-controlled Congress that rammed through the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution that, among other things, abolished slavery, guaranteed equal protection and due process and addressed blacks’ right to vote.

In the late 19th century, Democrat governors and Democrat-controlled state legislatures in the South couldn’t pass Jim Crow laws fast enough. Those Democrats created a nearly century-long, legal racial caste system that relegated blacks to the lowest educational, political, economic and social strata. I have family members who grew up under Jim Crow. To hear them tell it, it weren’t no joke. (source)

How about that Civil Rights Act of 1964?

The bill came before the full Senate for debate on March 30, 1964 and the “Southern Bloc” of southern Senators led by Richard Russell (D-GA) launched a filibuster to prevent its passage. Said Russell: “We will resist to the bitter end any measure or any movement which would have a tendency to bring about social equality and intermingling and amalgamation of the races in our (Southern) states.”  (source)

At one time there was such a thing as “Southern Democrats”:

Southern Democrats are members of the U.S. Democratic Party who reside in the American South. In the early 1800s, they were the definitive pro-slavery wing of the party, opposed to both the anti-slavery Republicans (GOP) and the more liberal Northern Democrats. After losing control of their party and territory in the American Civil War, and during the Republican-led Reconstruction that followed, Southern Democrats regrouped into various vigilante organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan and the White League.  (source)

So, you see Mr Reid, it would be much wiser for you to check your history before you open your mouth, and project your own prejudices on others!
