cheap materiel and unskilled labor may have also contributed

That is quite possible, but I’m wondering what San Fransisco would look like if they didn’t have all those ‘earthquake proof’ building with a 7.0.  I mean, it’s not like this is something that happens all that frequently.  Earthquakes, yeah, but big ones?  Extremely sad.

Being in the construction industry, we have had our discussions about the tragedy in Haiti and their non-earthquake proof buildings.  The simple fact of the matter is that Haiti doesn’t have gravel.  Their concrete is mixed with sand because it is abundant.  Just thought I’d pass that along in case you have a gravel pit in your backyard.

Kathy, doesn’t it also have something to do with the way the buildings are put together?  Don’t they use some sort of interlocking way of connecting the blocks, so they’ll sway, but not collapse?  I really gotta pay more attention when I watch TLC, Discovery, etc.  :?

Probably.  I’m sure there is no one cause.  Merely offering some explanation.

Maybe in my little area of tax.  :-)   Construction, NO!  Just repeating what the VP’s were telling us at lunch yesterday.  I thought it was interesting because it totally makes sense.

I heard something about topsoil and how it’s all gone because of the over production of sugar cane. I’ll ask my Dad when he comes in the weekend, he’s with the Corps of Engineers right now.

Hmm…  I’m not real sure how the erosion of over production can affect the situation.  Let me know what your dad says, K?
