Whirlpool will expand plant in Cleveland, not build in Mexico

Whirlpool Corp. plans a $120 million project in Cleveland, Tenn., that will include a 400,000-square-foot distribution center, the Wall Street Journal reported today.

The new plant is the centerpiece of a $300 million upgrade of domestic manufacturing facilities as the company shifts away from low-cost overseas locales in favor of domestic operations, the newspaper reported.

Whirlpool will add 130 staff to an existing work force of 1,500. It had considered sites in Mexico and elsewhere in the United States before deciding to replace Cleveland’s century-old factory where it assembles built-in cooking ranges and ovens, the newspaper said.

Unfortunately, Cleveland is on the other end of the state.  We could sure use some jobs in West Tennessee.
