Catholic Institutions Sue to Stop Obamacare’s Religious Liberty Violation

Three years ago, the University of Notre Dame invited President Barack Obama to deliver a commencement address and conferred on him an honorary law degree. But on Monday, the university joined 42 other Catholic institutions in suing the Obama Administration over new Obamacare regulations that force religious institutions to pay for coverage of abortion-inducing drugs, contraception, and sterilization regardless of the employers’ moral or religious objections.

The mandate’s narrow exemption effectively applies only to churches and other houses of worship; religiously affiliated hospitals, colleges, charities and other non-profits don’t qualify for a religious exemption. Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, explained the significance of the Administration’s mandate and its impact on those institutions, remarking that, “For the first time in this country’s history, the government’s new definition of religious institutions suggests that some of the very institutions that put our faith into practice–schools, hospitals, and social service organizations–are not ‘religious enough.’”

In total, 12 lawsuits were filed this week challenging the Administration’s anti-conscience mandate, and the wide range of organizations joining the legal challenge underscores the enormous opposition to the mandate. Heritage’s Sarah Torre explains that the lawsuits span from the Catholic dioceses of Washington, D.C., and Joilet, Illinois, to Catholic Charities of Jackson, Mississippi, and the Michigan Catholic Conference. “The range of the 43 institutions that have joined the dozen suits highlights the variety of Good Samaritan groups harmed by the mandate,” Torre writes. “These ministries serve inner-city children, the elderly, deaf, developmentally disabled, HIV/AIDS patients, and homeless–among many others. Catholic outreach, like many other religious groups in America, seeks to serve those most in need.”

These 43 plaintiffs join a number of others who had filed similar suits in recent weeks, including three evangelical higher education institutions: Colorado Christian University, Louisiana College and Geneva College. As the presidents of these schools explained in a Wall Street Journal op-ed in April:

[T]he Obama administration has passed a rule that will penalize our colleges with faith-based fines merely because we center our beliefs about the sanctity of human life on the Bible, not on the demands of federal bureaucrats. The administration’s mandate that religious employers provide coverage of abortion-inducing drugs for their faculty, staff, and students is a bridge too far in America.

This ‘conscience tax’ is a blatant violation of the freedoms of religion and speech guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and affirmed by federal laws such as the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. This mandate would be unjust even if it applied only to those who accept government funding, but it does much more than that. It applies to private, religious employers just because they exist in American society, regardless of whether they receive government funding.

Indeed, it is the Obama Administration’s attempt to broadly impose its will on any religious organization in violation of First Amendment protections that brought such a wide variety of institutions to challenge the Obamacare regulations. Notre Dame President Father John Jenkins wrote that his university’s lawsuit goes beyond a debate about contraception and is about the freedom of a religious organization to “live its mission”:

For if one Presidential Administration can override our religious purpose and use religious organizations to advance policies that undercut our values, then surely another Administration will do the same for another very different set of policies, each time invoking some concept of popular will or the public good, with the result these religious organizations become mere tools for the exercise of government power, morally subservient to the state, and not free from its infringements. If that happens, it will be the end of genuinely religious organizations in all but name.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has called the Obamacare mandate an “unprecedented” violation of religious freedom by the federal government. In addition to the lawsuits, Catholic bishops are planning a national campaign for religious freedom in the two weeks leading up to the Fourth of July holiday. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, explained the urgency behind their actions: “We have tried negotiation with the Administration and legislation with the Congress–and we’ll keep at it–but there’s still no fix. Time is running out, and our valuable ministries and fundamental rights hang in the balance, so we have to resort to the courts now.”

So yet again, Obamacare’s overreach will come before the courts, this time because its centrally driven health care policy is conflicting with conscience and poses a direct threat to the nation’s religious institutions. Regardless of the outcome, there is one thing Congress can do to stop the federal government’s vast overreach into American life — repeal Obamacare now, and then replace it with market-based reforms that respect religious liberty.

Although some NATO Summit protesters said there was nothing more incriminating than home brewing equipment in the Bridgeport apartment where they were staying, three of them have now been charged with possessing explosives to commit terrorist acts.

I guess it’s no secret I don’t much care for folks who make their ‘living’ going around the world, protesting whatever comes down the pike, but seriously?  Now, I suppose if these folks used bottles for their home brewed beer, someone might be able to misconstrue the purpose, but then again…

Ok, here’s your very basic beer brewing set up, bare bones type stuff.  They do get more elaborate, and expensive, but this is an example.

If all they were doing was making home brewed beer, then police over reacted. IF, on the other hand, as anarchists types are wont to do, they were preparing to create chaos, cause mayhem, and destroy anything in their path, then throw ‘em under the jail. I’m pretty fed up with those who have NO respect for other peoples property. If they made an effort to earn anything on their own, they just MIGHT understand.

There was also accusations of mistreatment, and ‘violation of civil rights’ by the police. Called me shocked! There always seem to be such accusations coming from the left, the anarchists, and generally anyone who has an issue about anything.  Isn’t it odd that they never mind violating someone else’s REAL rights, but when it comes to themselves, EVERYTHING is a “right”, and they are always being violated.  Did the guy actually WALK all the way from Philadelphia to Chicago just to stand around with some stupid sign, and shout vulgarities?  I have my doubts about that walking business. 

A judge in the latest ACLU-generated Ten Commandments display case has suggested that the targeted high school cull out four commandments that refer to God in order to avoid a full-blown lawsuit. As reported by the Associated Press, the ACLU of Virginia has filed a complaint against the Narrows, Virginia, high school on behalf of an unnamed student who claimed the display, which is part of a larger exhibit of historically significant documents, makes him feel like an outsider because he is an atheist.

When I first heard about this last week, I thought it was a joke.  Due to issues beyond my control, I didn’t get around to ‘investigating’ further.  But here it is…in black and white.  Exactly WHICH of the Ten Commandments would this judge suggest be removed?  (Torah – 20:1-13)  In the NKJV, there are 5 that don’t mention the Name, so which one would the judge leave in?  Or maybe he hasn’t read them in a while?

The ACLU is arguing that the display violates the First Amendment’s supposed separation clause, while the Giles County School Board, represented by the conservative legal advocacy group Liberty Counsel, insists that the Ten Commandments represent a crucial part of America’s historic foundation, and should be included with the other documents and illustrations in the display.

Actually, the ACLU is wrong, as usual, when it comes to the 1st Amendment.  They really need to do better in depth study on the subject.  Unfortunately, there are a WHOLE lot of officials that are totally clueless, and just take the word of organization like the ACLU and that bunch out of Wisconsin, Freedom from Religion.  I find it beyond rational that a minority can dictate to the majority, and the courts let them.  In the meantime, the country has gone down the tubes!  Perhaps if we return the Laws back into prominence in our classrooms, courts, and all public areas, the message would sink in?  Just a thought.

“Filing this lawsuit has not been easy, and I would not have done it if I were not genuinely disturbed by the Ten Commandments in the school,” the student in the case, referred to as “Doe 1,” said in a court document filed April 30. “I have had to go against school officials who have influence over my life and future.”

I’d like to know who hired this…kid (?)…to push their agenda.  And seriously, if this kid has such an issue with some basic, common sense Laws, then perhaps he/she has issues with ALL laws, rules, and regulations?  I don’t mean to sound, well, old fashioned might be the term, but perhaps the parents of this student have gone out of their way to spoil the little darlin’, giving in to him/her, whatever their empty heart desired?  It’s apparent to me there is an empty place inside this kid, but I’m sure there will those who would argue that point.  Argue away….won’t change my mind.

The school board is asking U.S. District Judge Michael Urbanski in Roanoke to rule that the Ten Commandments can stay, explaining that a private citizen had paid to put up the exhibit of historic documents and illustrations. The board insisted that the exhibit isn’t intended to be an endorsement of Judeo-Christian faith, but is an effort to show students some of the documents that were important to America’s founding.

Now, there’s an understatement! Where do these faith haters think we got our original laws? Perhaps they fell out of those rainbow farting unicorns?  I’m guessing Nature’s Law is as alien to the ACLU and Freedom from Religion bunch as integrity is foreign to a Dem politician.    Ok, a private citizen paid for the display, hoping to aid in helping students actually LEARN the history of this country.  And the problem is?  Oh, that’s right….those bozos don’t WANT kids to learn the truth.

The Giles County School District has a lengthy record of contention over Ten Commandments displays. “The county’s two high schools and three elementary/middle schools had posted the Ten Commandments for more than a decade,” reported the AP. “The Freedom From Religion Foundation, the ACLU’s co-counsel in the lawsuit, objected to the displays in 2010 and requested their removal. School officials replaced them with the Declaration of Independence.”

Another issue…do the citizens of the community not pay property taxes which, in turn, pay for the schools?  Shouldn’t the citizens who actually have a say in whether or not the display stays or not?  What right does the ACLU and FFR have that they can come into a community and tell these taxpayers what they can have in the schools THEY pay for, huh?  I’d really like to know!

At a hearing on the case Urbanski, who hoped to resolve the issue without a costly and lengthy trial, explained the reasoning behind his suggestion of cutting out some of the commandments. “If indeed this issue is not about God,” Urbanski wondered, “why wouldn’t it make sense for Giles County to say, ‘Let’s go back and just post the bottom six?’ But if it’s really about God, then they wouldn’t be willing to do that.”

This entire country, at it’s founding, was ‘about God’, and the liberties HE provided for us!  And I repeat the question….just which six would he ‘allow’ the school to post?  ALL of them are vital to the nation.  Just because a large number of people have forgotten, doesn’t mean that God has forgotten.  In man’s arrogance, he’s forgotten just WHO is really in charge!

It was quite an effective tool for “revenge and a sophisticated technique of repression and indoctrination, which developed for several years in the North and was extended to the South following the 1975 North Vietnam takeover.”  And this is what our mentally ill ‘friend’ wants for his fellow Americans?

The media should be at the forefront, investigating REAL crimes of this administration, yet we get silence. A lunatic unionista in Wisconsin sends death threats to elected officials in Wisconsin, and what……a slap on the wrist? Did you hear the socialist controlled Obama mouthpieces report on the constant threats towards Republican lawmakers in that state? Pfft! Paleeeeeze!

We do still have a 1st Amendment….for now.  And thank God we have people like Ted Nugent who is willing to speak up and call a spade a spade!  This is the most corrupt administration of my lifetime, and that include Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton.  Having private citizens speak the truth is not a crime.  What is a crime is that the media won’t!

I rely on my faith, not my denomination for guidance, as should we all!  They tell us religion and politics don’t mix.  They are wrong.  If we are expected to make informed decisions, then we should always look to God for guidance in making those decisions.  I hear Democrat politicians making speeches in churches, and wonder just how they have managed not to be struck by lightening.    Then, I realize, if these so called churches are following the teachings of the Bible, they wouldn’t be having those Democrats walk through their doors.  But we know that there is a ‘great apostasy’ going on (1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,), and I can’t imagine anything more demonic that promoting the slaughter of babies, open homosexuality, and immorality.

When David Brock applied for tax-exempt status for Media Matters for America, he told the IRS exactly who his group would be fighting against: businesses, wealthy Americans and conservative Christians.

“Media Matters for America (MMA) believes that news reporting and analysis by the American media, with its eye on profit margin and preservation of the status quo, has become biased,” read the group’s application, obtained by The Daily Caller, “It is common for news and commentary by the press to present viewpoints that tend to overly promote corporate interests, the rights of the wealthy, and a conservative, Christian-influenced ideology.”

Ya know, I’d find such statements downright hilarious if I thought these people were actually kidding.  But sadly, they are not.  I’d like to tell you people at MMA that if Christians had control of the media, you wouldn’t be watching 90% of the garbage you see on TV these days, and that includes the flippin’ commercials!

Media Matters has made no secret of its adherence to progressive principles, but flagging Christianity as having undue influence in media is the latest revelation about the group’s treatment of religion.

I honestly don’t think they realize just how much influence the opposite of Christianity has influenced all media. And that’s quite sad. From the evening news, to the car commercials, we have seen a complete turn around in our society. From shame to anything goes, sending the message to young girls that it’s ok to be a ‘slut’, as long as you dress like one…get your sexy little girl panties and drive the boys wild. Seriously? Do you actually believe that if TRUE Christians had the sort of influence that MMA says it does, that we’d be seeing a commercial for “Three and a Half Men” with a major character stating ‘your mother and my mother are having an affair’? Would we be seeing Bones and Booth having a baby, living together, with no hint of matrimony? Would trash like Jersey Shore be renewed season after season? Seriously? Do they really believe that any true Bible believing, washed in the Blood, Christian would allow such garbage to be shown on their television, if they had so much influence in the media? How about that Seventeen Magazine? Have you seen a copy of that lately? I wouldn’t line my cat box with the garbage they print, but young girls are influenced by the pictures they see of those refugee from Auschwitz type models, and many end up starving themselves to death because they feel they are ugly. What is ugly is what the media portrays as beautiful and normal.

I won’t even get into what they pass off as ‘music’. “Bitches”? “Hos”? Violence, screeching unintelligible lyrics, that if most parents could understand, would find itself in the shredder. At least I hope it would!

Unfortunately, there are far too many churches in this country who have turned a blind eye to the negative message the media presents, all in the name of diversity, acceptance, and tolerance. I honestly wish that Christianity had as much influence in the media as this bunch of leftists would like to portray. Hollywood would produce movies without a load of four lettered words that add nothing to the dialogue, there would be an obvious lack of gratuitous sex, and boys and girls could find some role models that didn’t encourage them to destroy their lives with binge drinking and drug use, casual sex, and baby murder.

As parents, we have an obligation to teach our kids right from wrong. I, sadly, was a bad influence on my kid. Yep, I was a really bad mother. If I had had more positives in my life, than negatives…sadly, of my own choosing, perhaps I could have become a better role model for her. Thankfully, she overcame my stupidity, and has turned out much better than I had hoped.

Am I a prude? Yep…reckon so….now. Through my life, I have learned many lessons, one of which dragged me kicking and screaming OUT of that world, and into one where I have found true joy. We should be so lucky that the media would present the TRUE side of Christianity, and be so influenced.

IMHO, this organization does not qualify as tax exempt, as it’s stated purpose for receiving it was based on complete lies!

Of Whom, Or What, Are They Afraid?

You know, for people who profess not to believe in a god, or even in the existence of God, some of these non-religious people sure seem to be frightened of SOMETHING.

Hardly a week goes by that we do not see evidence of their near overwhelming fear.

In America, non-religious are free to, uh, do whatever it is they do instead of worshiping a deity. Apparently, that sort of lifestyle in not, well, very fulfilling. How else to explain their seeming need to interfere with the choice of other Americans to worship the deity of their choice.

Now, I know they use the excuse of being concerned over the lack, in many situations, of separation between church and state. But, in my opinion, that is simply a “cover.”

As I see it, atheists simply USE the so-called constitutional declaration that church and state should never meet, let alone come it contact.

Let’s be clear. The US Constitution does not declare a separation of church and state. Nowhere in that esteemed document does the language come anywhere near saying that. What the constitution does state, and clearly, is that the state cannot establish a “state” religion. It also guarantees Americans the right to worship as they please without interference by the state, or anyone else.

THAT amendment is violated time and again, by the state and others, who seem to have missed it, entirely, in their reading of the constitution.

In recent decades there has been a definite up-tick in atheists demanding that religious symbols be removed from public view. They have adopted the time-honored “victimhood” ruse used so often and so successfully by minority groups in America.

But here’s the thing: The non-religious community in America is under absolutely NO THREAT from the religious community in America. Neither are they being threatened by any state of the union — and certainly not from the US government.

So what are they afraid of? Why do they so obviously feel threatened? Clearly, they present as threatened and/or afraid.

What else are we to surmise when the sight of a cross, a Star of David, a Christmas creche, a carving of the Ten Commandments, whether on state owned property or the top of a mountain, well off the beaten path, causes them to freak out?. Why does a notation on America’s paper money, proclaiming that America trusts in God, frighten them so much. Those symbols may well be emblematic of religion but they are also well known signs of civility and a reasonably well-behaved society.

In my opinion, the anti-religion folk’s reaction to all these things is rooted in guilt. It is as if they are proclaiming, if I have no god, then neither should you.

I think their self-determination that there is no God, that God does not exist, goes so against the wiring of the human mind that, deep down, they know they are disconnected from the remainder of humanity. Suddenly, they are alone — alone in the universe — and they are afraid.

When human beings live in a state of protracted fear, they tend to lash out, even when there is no threat. Innately, they know they are wrong. They know they are not in accord with the human universe and that “apartness” makes them afraid. So they lash out.

When a simple religious symbol such as a cross, or a Star of David becomes such an affront to them, their reaction is due, I believe, to deep rooted guilt — and they are truly afraid.

Therefore all these things, these symbols, must not be seen. They must be kept from public view, so that they, the non-religious, the anti-religious, cannot view them. They are all reminders of their decision to separate themselves from all of mankind, to be alone in a world, indeed, in a universe that NEEDS the existence of a Supreme Being.

To make their existence even more bitter is the knowledge that they will forever be cut off from, not just their fellow humans but, on the off chance that there is a God, they will be forever cut off from Him , as well.

They are a community set apart, by their own choosing, and they are angry, even furious that we don’t see their obvious intellectual supremacy over those of us who choose to put our faith in a being we insist is there and to whom we are, in the end, answerable. They refuse to accept “faith” as real even though their belief in no god is the very definition of faith. They are very sensitive and when challenged become very defensive because, deep down they really DO understand that they might be wrong.

They are a pitiful lot. They don’t “belong” (in the sense of being a part of) in a society of human beings who recognize man’s inability to save himself from his own tendency to create havoc and disorder. They separate themselves from a society, which has a yearning for a creator who cares for his creation and provides solace when the rigors of this life overwhelm us.

When the inevitable storms of life come, the people of faith have an anchor and a safe harbor. The non-religious, the anti-religious, and those who deny the existence of God, don’t have that. They resent the fact that they don’t — even though it is the direct result of a choice they, themselves, made.

Those who recognize no more powerful being than themselves have only their intellect to depend upon. Maybe I’m not as smart as they are — but I’m smart enough to know that I am not the most intelligent being in existence.

In my faith, we are taught to love “those who spitefully use us.” It is a difficult thing to do as we are so often spitefully used today.

Finally, to those who deny the existence of God and who resent those of us who are betting our souls that He does exist, we ask you to ponder this: What if YOU are WRONG? I mean, you were smart enough to determine that God does not exist. Surely you are smart enough to figure out what comes next — if you are wrong. Don’t you?
