A judge in the latest ACLU-generated Ten Commandments display case has suggested that the targeted high school cull out four commandments that refer to God in order to avoid a full-blown lawsuit. As reported by the Associated Press, the ACLU of Virginia has filed a complaint against the Narrows, Virginia, high school on behalf of an unnamed student who claimed the display, which is part of a larger exhibit of historically significant documents, makes him feel like an outsider because he is an atheist.

When I first heard about this last week, I thought it was a joke.  Due to issues beyond my control, I didn’t get around to ‘investigating’ further.  But here it is…in black and white.  Exactly WHICH of the Ten Commandments would this judge suggest be removed?  (Torah – 20:1-13)  In the NKJV, there are 5 that don’t mention the Name, so which one would the judge leave in?  Or maybe he hasn’t read them in a while?

The ACLU is arguing that the display violates the First Amendment’s supposed separation clause, while the Giles County School Board, represented by the conservative legal advocacy group Liberty Counsel, insists that the Ten Commandments represent a crucial part of America’s historic foundation, and should be included with the other documents and illustrations in the display.

Actually, the ACLU is wrong, as usual, when it comes to the 1st Amendment.  They really need to do better in depth study on the subject.  Unfortunately, there are a WHOLE lot of officials that are totally clueless, and just take the word of organization like the ACLU and that bunch out of Wisconsin, Freedom from Religion.  I find it beyond rational that a minority can dictate to the majority, and the courts let them.  In the meantime, the country has gone down the tubes!  Perhaps if we return the Laws back into prominence in our classrooms, courts, and all public areas, the message would sink in?  Just a thought.

“Filing this lawsuit has not been easy, and I would not have done it if I were not genuinely disturbed by the Ten Commandments in the school,” the student in the case, referred to as “Doe 1,” said in a court document filed April 30. “I have had to go against school officials who have influence over my life and future.”

I’d like to know who hired this…kid (?)…to push their agenda.  And seriously, if this kid has such an issue with some basic, common sense Laws, then perhaps he/she has issues with ALL laws, rules, and regulations?  I don’t mean to sound, well, old fashioned might be the term, but perhaps the parents of this student have gone out of their way to spoil the little darlin’, giving in to him/her, whatever their empty heart desired?  It’s apparent to me there is an empty place inside this kid, but I’m sure there will those who would argue that point.  Argue away….won’t change my mind.

The school board is asking U.S. District Judge Michael Urbanski in Roanoke to rule that the Ten Commandments can stay, explaining that a private citizen had paid to put up the exhibit of historic documents and illustrations. The board insisted that the exhibit isn’t intended to be an endorsement of Judeo-Christian faith, but is an effort to show students some of the documents that were important to America’s founding.

Now, there’s an understatement! Where do these faith haters think we got our original laws? Perhaps they fell out of those rainbow farting unicorns?  I’m guessing Nature’s Law is as alien to the ACLU and Freedom from Religion bunch as integrity is foreign to a Dem politician.    Ok, a private citizen paid for the display, hoping to aid in helping students actually LEARN the history of this country.  And the problem is?  Oh, that’s right….those bozos don’t WANT kids to learn the truth.

The Giles County School District has a lengthy record of contention over Ten Commandments displays. “The county’s two high schools and three elementary/middle schools had posted the Ten Commandments for more than a decade,” reported the AP. “The Freedom From Religion Foundation, the ACLU’s co-counsel in the lawsuit, objected to the displays in 2010 and requested their removal. School officials replaced them with the Declaration of Independence.”

Another issue…do the citizens of the community not pay property taxes which, in turn, pay for the schools?  Shouldn’t the citizens who actually have a say in whether or not the display stays or not?  What right does the ACLU and FFR have that they can come into a community and tell these taxpayers what they can have in the schools THEY pay for, huh?  I’d really like to know!

At a hearing on the case Urbanski, who hoped to resolve the issue without a costly and lengthy trial, explained the reasoning behind his suggestion of cutting out some of the commandments. “If indeed this issue is not about God,” Urbanski wondered, “why wouldn’t it make sense for Giles County to say, ‘Let’s go back and just post the bottom six?’ But if it’s really about God, then they wouldn’t be willing to do that.”

This entire country, at it’s founding, was ‘about God’, and the liberties HE provided for us!  And I repeat the question….just which six would he ‘allow’ the school to post?  ALL of them are vital to the nation.  Just because a large number of people have forgotten, doesn’t mean that God has forgotten.  In man’s arrogance, he’s forgotten just WHO is really in charge!

Sending banks envelopes of white power, even though found to be non-toxic, really isn’t the mark of a ‘peaceful’ organization, is it.  Included with their little gift:

The CFR’s “task force” has announced that the failure of tax-funded K-12 education is the #1 threat to America’s position in the world.

The United States’ failure to educate its students leaves them unprepared to compete and threatens the country’s ability to thrive in a global economy and maintain its leadership role, finds a new Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)–sponsored Independent Task Force report on U.S. Education Reform and National Security.

“Educational failure puts the United States’ future economic prosperity, global position, and physical safety at risk,” warns the Task Force, chaired by Joel I. Klein, former head of New York City public schools, and Condoleezza Rice, former U.S. secretary of state. The country “will not be able to keep pace—much less lead—globally unless it moves to fix the problems it has allowed to fester for too long,” argues the Task Force.

The report notes that while the United States invests more in K-12 public education than many other developed countries, its students are ill prepared to compete with their global peers. According to the results of the 2009 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), an international assessment that measures the performance of 15-year-olds in reading, mathematics, and science every three years, U.S. students rank fourteenth in reading, twenty-fifth in math, and seventeenth in science compared to students in other industrialized countries.

This sounds bad. It is bad. The problem is, all this has been known for years. Nothing changes except cost per student, which rises. Reform after reform is proposed. A few are begun. The performance of the students falls. The cost per student rises.

I’m going to HAVE to slip in a “WE TOLD YOU SO!” here.  What those on the right have known for years, has been confirmed over and over.  This report is just one more confirmation!  The cost of education continues to skyrocket, yet the quality continues to plummet.  There is no one answer, but there is a BIG one at the forefront!

Here are some data on student performance.

• More than 25 percent of students fail to graduate from high school in four years; for African-American and Hispanic students, this number is approaching 40 percent.
• In civics, only a quarter of U.S. students are proficient or better on the National Assessment of Educational Progress.
• Although the United States is a nation of immigrants, roughly eight in ten Americans speak only English and a decreasing number of schools are teaching foreign languages.
• A recent report by ACT, the not-for-profit testing organization, found that only 22 percent of U.S. high school students met “college ready” standards in all of their core subjects; these figures are even lower for African-American and Hispanic students.
• The College Board reported that even among college-bound seniors, only 43 percent met college-ready standards, meaning that more college students need to take remedial courses.

These are national over all averages. Of course, there are some schools, school districts, that exceed expectations, but those are becoming fewer and farther between. Do you ever ask yourself why? I did, many years ago, and after some majoy reading, investigating on my own, I figured it out. Those school districts that are at the bottom, and usually wholly ‘owned’ by the unions. Yet, in those same districts, taxes keep rising due to the cost of ‘education’. It’s not the education of the student that is so expensive these days….it’s the cost of putting a union hack teacher in the classroom. You aren’t paying for books, desks, needed supplies for your kids. No, you are paying for fat benefit packages, the type of package that will continue to pay the so called ‘teacher’ until the day he, or she, dies.

Yes, I realize this is not the only reason our kids are failing. Once upon a time, our schools were the best in the world, our kids were educated. Not all them were of the high IQ type, but they could at least read, write, and do math, and that’s pretty much what was needed to make their way in the world. If you can’t read or write, you are not going very far, are you! And if you can’t manage to balance your checkbook, you find yourself in a world of financial hurt. (Kind of like what Congress has done to the whole country.)

While the report identifies the problem, which we already knew, it, sadly, has no solutions.

There is a solution: stop all tax funding of education. But the CFR is not going to propose that. Ever. The Establishment wants control over education. Taxation is its tool.

I went to public schools for most my education needs. Granted, there were a couple of years of private schools, but we won’t go into that. First grade was in a private, religious, setting. I did quite well as a matter of fact, but then, I was able to read before I even started kindergarten at the age of 4. Why? Because my parents cared enough about my ability to learn to take the time to teach me. I did the same thing with Brat, and with Jr. Jr was doing math at 3 or 4. Intelligent, but no common sense sometimes.

When I was in the third grade, things started to change. They came up with ‘new math’. New math? 1+1 still equaled 2. What’s to change? Well, they did. I don’t know whose bright idea that was, but I wasn’t the only kid who had problems. Oh, the answer was still 2, I think, but getting to it was a whole different ballgame, and did NO ONE a bit of good. I suppose some moron sitting in a cubby somewhere came up with this bright idea to change basic facts into a psychological challenge? Who knows, but whoever it was, should have been horse whipped!

One important factor though, growing up (from age 6 to 19) in basically the birthplace of the colonies, I got quite a historical perspective of the country before I even got out of elementary school. There was a sign we passed every Sunday on our way to church: “Hampton – the oldest English speaking city in the country. Established 1610. Yep. I got a major dose of American history. Now, you ask a high school graduate who Patrick Henry was, and they give you the deer in the headlights look. Seriously? I had to memorize his “give me liberty, or give me death” speech in the 4th grade! I sat where he sate in the House of Burgess’ in Williamsburg. Does anyone even know who George Wythe was anymore?

I realize I was quite lucky now, even though, at the time, I didn’t know just how lucky I was to have teachers who actually expected us to LEARN! I appreciate my parents involvement in my education, which seems to be lacking in a great many parents today.

Between the lack of fact educated teachers, and the lack of parental involvement, we now have a system of indoctrination, not education.

The statistics are mind boggling! Instead of those so called ‘civil rights leaders’ whipping up folks into a frenzy over a bad situation, without knowing all the facts, they should be gathering in from of the Department of Education and DEMANDING the true education of the youth of today. Instead of shouting at the top of their lungs about ‘injustice’, why not encourage the youth to become education so such injustices will not be part of their lives? Instead of promoting hate towards their fellow man over perceived injustices, how about encouraging the youth to finish school, learn to speak English, pull up their pants, and become part of a society that admires entrepreneurship? How about encouraging personal responsibility, instead of the ‘you owe me’ and ‘blame in “the Man”‘ mindset? Why not teach our young people that families make your life better, instead seeing how many babies you can have so you get more government assistance? And this applies to youth of ALL colors!

We prayed every morning.  We said the “Pledge of Allegiance”. We had the 10 Commandments posted in every classroom. We were taught right from wrong. We didn’t have kids beating the crap out of each other, and parents encouraging violence. If you cussed in school, you were sent to the principal’s office, parents were called, and likely you would either get detention, or suspension, depending on the severity of your offense. No in school suspension either. No, you were kept home, and likely got a whupping you remember to this day!

Along with the reading, writing, history, math, languages, civics and home ec, we were taught values that would sustain throughout our lives, and aid us in being self sufficient. What do they teach now? How to get the most out of the taxpayers through government programs?

Demonstrating the need for Texas’s law, a Texas-based group called True the Vote has found many instances of the very voter registration irregularities that Voter ID is designed to prevent from turning into fraudulent votes, and thus to shield our elections from some of the easiest to perpetrate forms of corruption. They found particular problems in the Houston-area district of Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee who, as usual, cried “racist!”

I know it’s not funny, but I can only chuckle when I hear Shelia Jackson Lee spouting her ‘racist’ line.  Doesn’t matter what it is about, that’s her battle cry, and too many follow along blindly.  What is racist is the obvious fraud that has been perpetrated on the American people, of all colors, by the Democrat Party.  This isn’t new.  Since the days of Reconstruction, the Democrats have been targeting white AND black Americans.  Their history is steeped in racism and violence.

Don’t believe me?  Go to the National Black Republican Association website, read for yourself.  Educate yourself on the REAL history, and who it has been, closing in on 2 centuries, that has fought any progress for black Americans.  Talk to people like Alfonzo Rachel, Stacy Swimp, and Lloyd Marcus.  Learn from Thomas Sowell, Frantz Kebreau, Kevin Jackson, Starr Parker and many more.  Listen to Representatives Allen West and Tim Scott.

Ya just gotta love those Dems who equate voter ID with ‘bringing back Jim Crow‘.  (My goodness, that’s one extremely ignorant woman!  Y’all should be embarrassed!)  Well, they should know better, since it was the DEMOCRATS who enacted those laws.  But even they are willfully ignorant of their own history.  Or perhaps they choose to keep their followers blindly in the dark?  Apparently, it’s another one of those important tidbits that is being left out of our public school system.  Why would the Democrats, and their ‘strong armed unions’ want our kids to learn the REAL history of the country?

One of the points in history that is being overlooked took place after WWII, when the veterans were coming home, trying to make their way, and fit back in to their home towns.  Last week, I posted a video by Wild Bill who touched on the subject of McMinn County Tennessee.  Yesterday, Doc sent me a video from a ‘made for tv’ movie covering the subject as well.

There had been long-standing concern in McMinn County about political corruption and possible election fraud.^[1] At citizen request, the U.S. Department of Justice had investigated allegations of electoral fraud in 1940, 1942, and 1944, but had not taken action.^[1][2] The wealthy Cantrell family (supporters of the Democrats’ New Deal policies in the 1932 Presidential elections) essentially ruled the county. Paul Cantrell was elected sheriff in the 1936, 1938, and 1940 elections, then was elected to the state senate in 1942 and 1944, while his former deputy, Pat Mansfield, was elected sheriff.^[1][2] A state law enacted in 1941 had reduced local political opposition by reducing the number of voting precincts from 23 to 12 and reducing the number of justices of the peace from fourteen to seven (including four “Cantrell men”).^[1] The sheriff and his deputies operated a fee system under which they received a cut of the money for every person they booked, incarcerated, and released; the more arrests, the more money they made.^[1] Often, buses passing through the county were pulled over and the passengers were randomly ticketed for drunkenness, whether guilty or not.^[1]

In the August 1946 election, Paul Cantrell was once again a candidate for sheriff, while Pat Mansfield sought the state senate seat.^[1] After World War II ended, some 3,000 military veterans (constituting about 10 percent of the county population) had returned to McMinn County. Some of the returning veterans resolved to challenge Cantrell’s political control by fielding their own nonpartisan candidates and working for a fraud-free election.

The purpose of Voter ID is to prevent fraud.  The purpose of the Justice Department of Eric Holder and Barack Obama is to insure it.  You need ID to do business with your bank, and buy alcohol, and rent movies, buy a vehicle, etc.  In Mexico, you need a Voter ID.

Just to be clear, the nations comprising this supposed champion of human rights include dictatorial and oppressive regimes like China, Cuba, and Russia. (source)

When you stop and think about it, do you honestly believe the people of Minnesota are really so stupid as to elect a very bad comedienne to the Senate?  If they are, then perhaps they shouldn’t vote?  Just sayin’.

It is my opinion that the Democrats fear they cannot win on their record, so they must resort to fraud.  When the truth comes out about their records, it really is a very ugly picture that is painted.  We NEED proof that voters are not breaking the law.  We need to know our vote counts.  We don’t trust the government, and for good reason.  I’d really hate to see something like the incident in McMinn County happen again!  Maybe that’s exactly what those who oppose legal voting are hoping will happen?

On the heels of the National Defense Authorization Act’s indefinite detention provision and Attorney General Eric Holder’s unfortunate “the U.S. government has the right to kill you” speech and while the word “terrorist” is used ever more loosely, left-wing activists groups are ramping up their campaigns against those who believe in smaller government.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (also known more accurately as the Southern Preposterous Lie Center here at Personal Liberty Digest™), long known and called out for its shameless exploitation of race for profit, has released its latest report profiling hate in America: “The ‘Patriot’ Movement Explodes.” The word “patriot” as defined over the course of about 3,000 words by the author, however, varies a bit from Webster’s definition and the likely definition of most people who feel patriotic: “One who loves and loyally or zealously supports one’s own country.”

If there is any hate filled, racist organization, that would be SPLC!  But yet, according to their definition, I’m a terrorist, and likely, so are you!

Following the alarmist introduction, the author tells his readers that the so-called “Patriot movement” is again on the uptick, growing from 149 groups in 2008 to 512 in 2009, and again in 2010 to 824, and then, last year, jumping to 1,274. The title of the report and the groups contained under the author’s definition of “patriot” likely alarm the everyday conservative who may spend time on weekends organizing for like-minded political candidates, lecturing friends about the value of our Founders’ vision laid forth in the Constitution of the United States, decrying the continual expansion of an ever-stifling Federal bureaucracy or waving signs on the local courthouse steps with Tea Party peers.

Granted, there are some groups, on the very FAR right, and the very FAR left, that are likely not all that concerned with the Constitution, or the rule of law.  The very FAR right most likely want to be separate from the rest of the country that may see us regular ol’ patriots as too far left.  Go figure.  Then, on the very FAR left, we see the anarchists who are attacking the police and destroying property, masquerading as “Occupiers”.

Following are some of the subgroups into which the alarmists at SPLC divide patriots:

• Anti-Gay: Patriotic Americans as defined by SPLC can be members of one of 27 militantly anti-gay groups that are involved in “efforts to ban or repeal marriage equality and what seemed to be an intensification of anti-gay propaganda in certain quarters.”
• Anti-Muslim: The author contends that people who consider themselves to be American patriots may be involved in one of the 30 groups that exist throughout the Nation that vilify and commit hate crimes against Muslims.
• Black Separatists: Black Americans who consider themselves patriots, have an unfavorable view of President Barack Obama or who believe the Constitution is an important document are likely members of the small portion of African-Americans belonging to the greater sovereign citizens movement, according to SPLC.
• Christian Identity: Patriots who are also Christians may believe that Jewish people are direct descendants of Satan and people of color are “soulless mud people” in SPLC’s view.
• Ku Klux Klan: The SPLC believes that the growing Patriot movement also coincides with a growing number of Ku Klux Klan members in the country.
• Neo-Confederates: Centered on the Alabama League of the South, a group founded in 1994 with the alleged goal to organize a second Southern secession, there are 32 neo-Confederate organizations that SPLC says American patriots may belong to.
• Racist Skinhead Groups: SPLC believes that American patriots could belong to any number of racist skinhead organizations — groups that have been defined over the past several decades as being fond of punk rock, anarchy and racism.
• White Nationalist Groups: In SPLC’s view, patriotic Americans may be white nationalists, similar to those who protested school integration and racial equality during the Civil Rights era.

Well, I’m not sure about any rabid ‘anti-gay’ groups, but I do know that there are some of us out here who do take God as his word. You know, that whole man and woman becoming one, and the abomination issue. Most of us don’t hate homosexuals. Hate is for those who want to expend the energy, and wear themselves out by using destructive actions. I don’t know anyone who does that. I do know many who love the ‘sinner’, and would like to help in any way possible to get back on the path that God intended. But hate? Nope. No hate.

Anti-muslim?  Well, yes and no.  When there are people who want to destroy our Republic form of government, and replace it with a theocracy based on one of the most hate fill ‘religious cults’ I’ve ever seen, then…yeah….you could call me anti-muslim.  Not to mention that little fact….we either submit, or we die.  I have a BIG problem with that ideology.  I would also mention, this is the bunch who murders their children for the sake of ‘honor’, hangs homosexuals, stones women for being raped, and an amazing array of other tidbits that, evidently, the SPLC hasn’t bothered to notice.  As for ‘hate crimes’ against muslims?  Seriously?  Compare the ‘hate crimes’ (2009) against Jews (71.9%) vs ‘hate crime’ against muslims (8.4%), and tell me again just who is being targeted because of their religion?  From the statistics for subsequent years, the numbers have risen significantly….but not against muslims.

I think I know a few ‘black-separatists’.  They would be the Americans with dark skin, and no hyphens, who are none to fond of Barack Hussein Obama and his socialist policies.   Now, I’m fairly sure those ‘black-separatists’ that I know don’t have anything to do with the ‘sovereign citizens movement’.   In case you aren’t familiar with this ‘movement’, Wikipedia describes it:

Self-described sovereign citizens take the position that they are answerable only to common law and are not subject to any statutes or proceedings at the federal, state or municipal levels, or that they do not recognize U.S. currency and that they are “free of any legal constraints”.

They especially reject most forms of taxation as illegitimate. Participants in the movement argue this concept in opposition to “federal citizens”, who, they say, have unknowingly forfeited their rights by accepting some aspect of federal law.

I’ve seen a couple of folks who described themselves as such on the news out of Memphis a time or two.  Honestly, I think those who were interviewed were in serious need of some psychiatric help, but that’s just my opinion, and only covers those I personally saw on the news.  If the entire movement is different that what I saw, then, well…. not sure how to describe them.  The father and son team, Jerry and Joseph Kane, who murdered police officers after a routine traffic stop, claimed to be ‘sovereign citizens’, unanswerable to any law.  Well, I don’t know anyone like that, especially anyone I ever met through the Tea Party, Oath Keepers, or any other political organization or rally.  Most of the folks I know believe in the laws, unlike many of those in Congress and filling White House positions.  Folks I know believe the law of the land applies to EVERYONE, including elected officials, and those appointed to official posts.

Christian Identity…..sy whut?  Well, no TRUE Christian believes what is posted above from that report.  No….. TRUE Christians know that Israel is God’s Chosen People.  “Patriots who are also Christians may believe that Jewish people are direct descendants of Satan and people of color are “soulless mud people” in SPLC’s view.”  That’s about the most ridiculous thing I’ve read in  quite a while!  Obviously, the SPLC doesn’t know any TRUE Christians. 

Now, as for the KKK, the Neo-Confederates, skinheads, and white nationalist groups….don’t think I’ve ever come across any who are members of those groups.  I do know there are some in the South that are fed up with the east coast liberals who have been eroding the liberties of ALL Americans, and it’s possible that some wouldn’t mind cutting us off from the BIG gubmint types that tend to come from the north east, and the left coast.  Seriously, I wouldn’t mind it myself.  But as a whole, we’d actually like to return to the days when we were the UNITED States of America, instead of what we are now….the DIVIDED states. 

I remember the KKK from my youth, growing up in the South.  Evil people….Democrats.  Now, if you want to talk about home grown terrorists, take a real hard look at the history of the Klu Klux Klan, and exactly WHO they were/are…the terrorist wing of the Democrat Party!

“Founded in 1866 as a Tennessee social club, the Ku Klux Klan spread into nearly every Southern state, launching a ‘reign of terror‘ against Republican leaders black and white.” Page 184 of his book contains the definitive statements: “In effect, the Klan was a military force serving the interests of the Democratic party, the planter class, and all those who desired the restoration of white supremacy. It aimed to destroy the Republican party’s infrastructure, undermine the Reconstruction state, reestablish control of the black labor force, and restore racial subordination in every aspect of Southern life.”

Honestly, I think those yahoos just pull crap out of their asses and parade it as truth. We know bullsh*t when we see it, and this is a large pile!

The film could be no longer than three minutes, contain only 6 lines of narrative & be a compelling story. The winner was “Porcelain Unicorn,” from American director Keegan Wilcox.

It’s a story of the lifetimes of two people who are totally opposite, yet, very much the same – all told in less than 3 minutes.

The latest liberal tendency — to try and cast Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum as racists, or cynical race-baiters to a party stuffed full of racists — is an absolute natural for “Reverend” Al Sharpton on MSNBC. On the Sharpton show Politics Nation on Friday night, former CNN reporter Bob Franken shoved both candidates into the mud for their talk of blacks and government dependency: “I think this is very intentional. I think it is part of a hateful campaign that is being very methodically run in the hope it`s going to appeal to voters who would love to see us return to the good old days of Jim Crow.”

Really? Wouldn’t a so called journalist check facts? But then, we no longer have journalists. We have the propaganda arm of the Democrat Party sitting behind the anchor desks and typewriters now.

In 1832, the phrase “Jim Crow” was born. By 1900, every former Confederate state (including Wyoming, Missouri, Ohio, Utah, Kentucky, Kansas and Oklahoma) had enacted “Jim Crow” laws prohibiting everything from interracial marriage to racially integrated public school systems. These state laws served to place blacks back on a virtual plantation. Similar to the “Black Codes” that came before them, Jim Crow laws were numerous. However, one denominator codified their sound support in Southern states: They all resulted from Democratic legislators of the “Solid South.” (source)

Seriously, you’d think that even Al Sharpton should know the truth, but evidently, he’s just a poverty pimp tool for the Democrats, so will tow the line for the Democrat ‘massas’. Perhaps Mr Sharpton should read up on his history, and make sure that so called former “journalist” gets educated as well!

How long are we going to let the blatant LIES continue? But hey, don’t take my word for it!  There is plenty of evidence that it is the Democrat Party that is the party of racists!  And the history of their racism is LONG!

It wasn’t the Democrats who freed the slaves. It wasn’t the Democrats who authored bill after bill to promote civil rights. It wasn’t the Republicans who stood in the school house door. It wasn’t the Republicans who killed civil rights activists. It wasn’t the Republicans who imposed a ‘voter literacy test‘.  It was the Democrat Party that had/has (?) a terrorist arm, NOT the Republicans.

If U.S. history is a painting on a giant canvas, President Barack Obama’s speech this week in Osawatomie, Kansas, is a thick coat of whitewash layered all over it, and the failure of the last three years lies underneath. The President’s pretense is that, no, it’s not Obamanomics that has caused persistent unemployment, stunted growth and record deficits–it’s supply side economics!

Talk about audacity.

The President’s speech was a naked portrayal of his vision of America–one where inequality runs rampant, where the American dream is nearly dead, where the rich oppress the poor, where education is undervalued. As Charles Krauthammer observes this morning in The Washington Post, “That’s the kind of damning observation the opposition brings up when you’ve been in office three years.”

Indeed, what was glaringly absent from the President’s portrait was the fact that his economic policies have failed to put Americans back to work and his absolute inability to lead Washington toward combating rampant government spending. His solution, moreover, was more of the same stuff that has failed spectacularly for him: government as the great savior.

But in President Obama’s mind, it is others who offer ideas that don’t work, not him. He points to “a certain crowd in Washington” that argues for tax cuts and reduced regulations, calling it “a simple theory” that “fits well on a bumper sticker” but “has never worked.”

Correction, Mr. President. It has worked–time and time again throughout history. The trouble is, Mr. Obama has never tried it, and the Keynesian economic policies he enacted fell flat on their face, just as they have throughout history.

It started with a massive $787 billion stimulus bill that White House economists predicted would create (not merely save) 3.3 million net jobs by 2010. It was Keynesian economics at its finest, based on the premise that government spending would spark demand and put Americans back to work.

It didn’t. Some 13.3 million Americans remain out of work, the unemployment rate has hovered between 8 and 10 percent throughout Obama’s presidency, and economic growth has been stuck on slow. In fact, today America is witnessing the longest stretch of such high unemployment in the postwar era. Meanwhile, job creation has hit a record low, as Heritage’s James Sherk explains:

Fewer existing businesses are expanding, while fewer entrepreneurs are starting new businesses. In the first quarter of 2011, the number of workers hired in new business establishments fell to just 660,000, 27 percent fewer than when the recession began. This is the lowest number of workers hired at new businesses that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has ever recorded–lower even than the worst points of the recession.

Yet despite these numbers — and the fact that President Obama had near-free rein to enact the Keynesian economic policies he saw fit — the President is now demagoguing the one economic policy he hasn’t tried — supply-side economics — while calling for more government spending all as America’s debt is deepening. He would do better to study history and get a grasp of how cutting taxes and freeing the market has worked when employed by both Democrats and Republicans.

Lowering tax rates, thereby allowing people to keep and invest more of the money that is rightfully theirs, has proven good for the economy time and time again. In the 1920s, 1960s, and 1980s, tax rate reductions resulted in faster growth, rising incomes, and more job creation. And despite the President’s claim that cutting taxes only helps the rich, when tax rates were lowered in those decades, higher-income Americans paid an even greater share of the tax burden because they had fewer reasons to hide, shelter, and under-report income. But if taxes are increased — as President Obama continues to threaten — the price of working, saving, investing, and taking risks goes up, too.

History bears this out. Daniel Mitchell writes that in the 1920s, under Presidents Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge, the top tax rate was reduced from 73 percent to 25 percent. The result? The economy expanded, growing by 59 percent between 1921 and 1929, with annual economic growth averaging more than 6 percent. Under President Kennedy, the top rate dropped from 91 percent in 1963 to 70 percent by 1965. The result? Between 1961 and 1968, the economy expanded by more than 42 percent, with average annual growth of more than 5 percent. Under President Reagan, the top tax rate fell from 70 percent in 1980 to 28 percent by 1988, leading to incredible economic expansion and average growth of nearly 4 percent. Finally, in the six quarters following the 2003 tax cuts, the GDP’s growth rate shot up to 4.1 percent from 1.7 percent before.

But the President doesn’t have to take The Heritage Foundation’s word for it. He can heed the words of President Kennedy in his 1962 speech to the Economic Club of New York:

Our true choice is not between tax reduction, on the one hand, and the avoidance of large federal deficits on the other. It is increasingly clear that no matter what party is in power, so long as our national security needs keep rising, an economy hampered by restrictive tax rates will never produce enough revenues to balance our budget just as it will never produce enough jobs or enough profits.

Unfortunately, President Obama does not appear open to advice, nor does he seem cognizant of history–be it that of 10, 20, 40, or 90 years ago, or even his experience of the last three years. Instead, he is damning the torpedoes and continuing to pursue a liberal, progressive agenda that has proven to be a failure. As they have for the past three years, Americans will pay the price.

On this day 70 years ago, President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed a joint session of Congress and requested a declaration of war against Japan following the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor the day before. Roosevelt’s words carried forth across the nation via radio, and the consequences of the actions America would take would be felt around the world–and across history. The lessons America learned in those fateful days should be remembered even today.

Roosevelt noted that the day of Japan’s attack would be “a date which will live in infamy,” and he also pledged the following:

I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces — with the unbounding determination of our people — we will gain the inevitable triumph — so help us God.

Just as Roosevelt proclaimed that “hostilities exist” 70 years ago, those words are true today. The United States faces threats at home and abroad–as we were reminded on September 11 and with every man and woman in military who makes the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms. The hostilities we face today are different from those we may face tomorrow, and there is no telling what challenges may lie around the corner. For that reason, our military must stand ready, prepared, and adequately equipped and funded to meet all threats, foreign and domestic.

Unfortunately, the U.S. military’s ability to effectively carry out its mission is in jeopardy. Today, there are those who would like America to return to an era of disengagement while also slashing military spending to dangerous levels. Under the Budget Control Act (BCA), the military budget will be cut by almost $1 trillion over the next 10 years. Those cuts come on top of successive rounds of deep cuts in defense dollars and capabilities that Congress and the Obama Administration have already implemented. In a new paper, Heritage’s Mackenzie Eaglen writes that those cuts will undermine U.S. power and influence around the world and reduce the ability of the military to meet future threats:

The military is a vital tool of U.S. foreign policy. Slashing defense spending without any reduction in U.S. foreign policy commitments around the world is not only dangerous, but also more costly in the long run than maintaining stable defense budgets. A review of roles and missions will not change U.S. foreign policy; only the President can do that. Starving the military as part of a deficit reduction plan may cost taxpayers more in the future if it makes the country less safe and increases the risk of another terrorist attack or the likelihood of U.S. forces being drawn into yet another overseas mission.

The only responsible way to fund defense is to identify the nation’s vital national interests, ask what is required to defend the nation and those interests, determine what military capabilities are required to do so, and then build a defense budget to match the foreign and defense policies of the United States.

Eaglen recommends that Congress tackle debt reduction responsibly with American security interests in mind. That means stopping the current rounds of defense cuts, budgeting responsibly for America’s foreign policy needs and objectives, and repealing the debt ceiling deal “trigger.” Other actions she recommends include stabilizing the military’s modernization accounts, aggressively promoting foreign military sales and increasing cutting-edge defense exports to friends and allies, and forcing the Department of Defense to innovate even as budgets fall.

Some would have Americans believe that defense budget cuts required under the BCA would reduce only the rate of increase in the overall defense budget. While precise defense budget projections under the BCA are not possible, it is a certainty that the overall defense budget will decline under its terms. And those are reductions the military can ill afford. Since President Obama took office, more than 50 major weapons programs at a value of more than $300 billion were cut or delayed. On top of this, the Administration told the military to cut almost $600 billion more over the next 15 years. That was even before the BCA took effect.

This is no way to fund a military or to fulfill the Constitution’s prescription that the primary role of the federal government is “to provide for the common defence.” That duty is just as important now as it was 70 years ago when America faced one of its greatest challenges. Just as they did then, Congress and the President should ensure that the federal government carries out its responsibilities today and fully funds our military.
