What Is The TRUTH??

- A Saudi national originally identified as a “person of interest” in the Boston Marathon bombing was set to be deported under section 212 3B — “Security and related grounds” — “Terrorist activities” after the bombing
- As the story gained traction, TheBlaze’s Chief Content Officer Joel Cheatwood received word that the government may not deport the Saudi national, originally identified as Abdul Rahman Ali Alharbi
- Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano refused to answer questions on the subject when confronted by Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) on Capitol Hill.
- An ICE official said a separate Saudi national is in custody, but is “in no way” connected to the bombings.
- A congressional source, however, says that the file on Alharbi was created, that he was “linked” in some way to the Boston bombings (though it is unclear how), and that documents showing all this have been sent to Congress.

- Fox News’ Todd Starnes reports that Alharbi was allegedly flagged on a terrorist watch list and granted a student visa without being properly vetted

- Sources say the Saudi’s student visa specifically allows him to go to school in Findlay, Ohio, though he appears to have an apartment in Boston, Massachusetts
- Sources tell us this will most likely now be kicked from the DHS to the DOJ and labeled an ongoing investigation that can no longer be discussed.
Government Wasting OUR Money
For two years, the Democrats knew it was coming. Obama knew it was coming. How did they prepare? By spending MORE money. Instead of using common sense, and cutting back, this administration, and it’s lackeys, went on a spending spree with OUR money. Do you think it was necessary for a bunch of government employees to go on a wine tasting tour, claiming it was a conference? No, I don’t think so either. But apparently, someone in a position of power thought it was important, so spent an outrageous sum for this little outing. Yes, our employees spent $340 MILLION dollars to eat, drink, and be merry on a variety of “conferences”.
The Obamas, together or separately, went on SIXTEEN vacations in 2012 alone! What was the cost of those vacations? Well, we know it was quite a tidy sum. The cost of running Air Force One is nearly $200,000 AN HOUR. When they take separate flights, going to the same place, it’s an additional 100 grand. Should this matter? Well, yes, of course it should! WE are paying for their fun time. If the Obamas paid for their own vacations, I really wouldn’t have a problem. If we had a leader, he, or she, would need a little down time now and then. He’s not a leader, in any way, shape, or form. However, since they are on a spending spree with our money, I think we have the DUTY to call them out. Don’t they have a house in Chicago they could use for down time, instead of renting “palaces” in Hawaii and foreign countries?
Did you take a vacation last year? Did it run into the millions, if you did? We didn’t get one. As a matter of fact, we haven’t taken a vacation since the second year of Obama’s first term. We couldn’t afford it! Oh sure, we run down to Texas, but we stay with my daughter. The cost is gas, and a couple of nights in an inexpensive motel while on the road, and even THAT is more than we can afford these days.
And let’s not forget those over priced, butt ugly clothes the First “Lady” wears! $5000 for a dress that was worn for a few minutes? Seriously? Dear Lord! Well, at least it wasn’t as ugly as what she usually dons.
Congressional spending on wasteful, non-essentials is just mind boggling. No where in the Constitution does it authorize spending for anything other than defense, the post office, and post roads. Promoting ‘science and USEFUL arts’ doesn’t mean paying for Piss Christ! I also don’t think that our Founders would have thought paying to watch a shrimp on a treadmill would be beneficial to the American people. I also have never seen any reference to giving our enemies money, especially in the sums that we have seen going to countries that would rather see us dead. I don’t consider that a ‘lawful debt‘!
The waste, and yes, fraud, we have in the federal government, including Medicare and Medicaid, would pay for any cuts necessary, and then some, without jeopardizing the safety and security of our nation. It would also be a good idea to stop supporting ILLEGAL invaders, through health benefits, education, and food stamps!
It is the Constitutional DUTY of the federal government to secure our borders, which is ‘providing for the general welfare’, yet we see DHS spending money on new ‘uniforms’ instead of hiring agents, and building a fence to prevent invasion. Instead of working WITH House leaders, Obama spends time, and our money, playing golf with Tiger Woods down in Florida.
The list of wasteful spending is long and varied, from all areas of government. The budgets of unconstitutional alphabet organizations, mostly with an agenda of destroying the American economy, are extreme. Thinking Americans are fed up with both parties’ disregard for their duties, violations of their oath of office, and corruption. It is the thinking American that is paying for it, and there is a limit to what thinking Americans will put up with from the government. That point is not as far away as many might think.

….in the largest city, you can buy two 16-ounce sodas, but not a 24-ounce soda because 24-ounces of a sugary drink might make you fat.
….an 80-year-old woman can be stripped searched by the TSA but a woman in a hijab is only subject to having her neck and head searched.
….your government believes that the best way to eradicate trillions of dollars of debt is to spend trillions more.
….a seven year old boy can be thrown out of school for saying his teacher cute, but hosting a sexual exploration or diversity class in grade school is perfectly acceptable.
….children are forcibly removed from parents who discipline them with spankings while children of addicts are left in filth and drug infested homes.
….hard work and success are met with higher taxes and more government intrusion, while not working is rewarded with EBT cards, WIC checks, Medicaid, subsidized housing, and free cell phones.
….the government’s plan for getting people back to work is to incentivize NOT working with 99 weeks of Unemployment checks and no requirement to prove they applied but can’t find work.
….you pay your mortgage faithfully, denying yourself the newest big screen TV while your neighbor buys iPhones, TVs and new cars, and the government forgives his debt when he defaults on his mortgage.
….being stripped of the ability to defend yourself makes you more safe according to the government.

A Declaration Against Citizens?
DHS built domestic surveillance tech into Predator drones
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has customized its Predator drones, originally built for overseas military operations, to carry out at-home surveillance tasks that have civil libertarians worried: identifying civilians carrying guns and tracking their cell phones, government documents show.
The documents provide more details about the surveillance capabilities of the department’s unmanned Predator B drones, which are primarily used to patrol the United States’ northern and southern borders but have been pressed into service on behalf of a growing number of law enforcement agencies including the FBI, the Secret Service, the Texas Rangers, and local police.
Homeland Security’s specifications for its drones, built by San Diego-based General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, say they “shall be capable of identifying a standing human being at night as likely armed or not,” meaning carrying a shotgun or rifle. They also specify “signals interception” technology that can capture communications in the frequency ranges used by mobile phones, and “direction finding” technology that can identify the locations of mobile devices or two-way radios.
Is this a declaration of “war” of the federal government on the American citizens? Who gave DHS the authority to use such technology on U.S. citizens? Claiming this will be to track criminals and invaders on the border is all well and good, but these drones can also track law abiding citizens as well. Publius gives us a simple way of learning the enumerated powers of Congress, and of the POTUS. Anything past those listed in the Constitution are unlawful. Giving any of the alphabets the power to spy on us is NOT Constitutional.
Concern about domestic use of drones is growing, with federal legislation introduced last month that would establish legal safeguards, in addition to parallel efforts underway from state and local lawmakers. The Federal Aviation Administration recently said that it will “address privacy-related data collection” by drones.
I think we all recognize the fact that this government is not concerned with privacy issues. Our liberties have been eroded, bit by bit, over the years, especially with this administration. The U.S. was founded as a Constitutional Republic, but is no longer Constitutional, nor a Republic. We are on the verge of complete collapse of what was once the most free nation on the planet. The idea that my government would spy on me, know whether or not I was carrying a weapon for my own protection, tracking me through my phone, is stepping way beyond the bounds of the powers WE granted by the Constitution. I’m no expert on the Constitution, but I would think this would be complete violation of the 4th Amendment:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. (emphasis mine)
It’s my opinion that having a drone watch your every move, is a violation of our God given right to be secure in our person. I don’t remember ever reading in our Constitution that the Federal government had been given the power to spy on our every move.
Although CBP’s unmanned Predator aircraft are commonly called drones, they’re remotely piloted by FAA-licensed operators on the ground. They can fly for up to 20 hours and carry a payload of about 500 lbs.
Why would the FAA need to have a “payload of about 500 lbs”? Are they planning on using them against American citizens?

Obama signs order to begin $85B in spending cuts
President Obama signed an order authorizing the government to begin cutting $85 billion from federal accounts, officially enacting across-the-board spending reductions.
Obama acted Friday, the deadline for the president and Congress to avoid the steep, one-year cuts.
Despite all the doom and gloom, and dire predictions…..I woke up this morning. The sky hadn’t fallen….well, depending on what you call ‘fallen’, cuz there is white stuff coming out of the sky in Memphis…..and there are no children, disabled or otherwise, begging on the street corners.
The president placed blame squarely on Republican lawmakers at a Friday press conference for failing to stop automatic spending cuts that were to begin kicking in later in the day, calling the cuts “dumb, arbitrary.”
Republicans, for their part, said the fault was his, for insisting that increased taxes be part of the resolution
Well, of course it’s the R’s fault! Nothing is EVER his fault, even if it is his idea. Kind of tired of his petulant behavior. I doubt he’ll ever be ‘presidential’ though because he’s a spoiled brat, who should have been turned over someone’s knee a LONG time ago!
The president said the impact of the cuts won’t immediately be felt, but middle class families will begin to “have their lives disrupted in significant ways.” He said that as long as the cuts stay in effect, Americans will know that the economy could have been better had they been averted.
“The pain, though, will be real,” Obama said.
Bubba, the pain has been real since you took office the first time! You’ve destroyed what could have been a recovery with your socialism, and if we ever get anyone with an ounce of sense, or leadership skills, it will be DECADES before we see a true recovery from having to have YOU in the White House, and your minions running the show!
IF we had a Constitutional government, as was the intent, this would never have been an issue. As it is, there are many place where cuts could be made, but alas, we don’t have any common sense in D.C. so the areas where there should be NO cuts, are the very places where there will BE cuts. They had, what….two years, to avoid all this faux panic? Instead of doing his job, Obama was way too busy hobnobbing with the Hollyweird crowd, playing golf, and dunking baskets. Let’s face a few facts here…we have NO president. We have NO leadership, and those who work FOR us have forgotten the fact, THEY answer to US! I really think it’s time to remind them. ALL of them!

Could Martial Law Be Right Around The Corner For Americans?
Merely a week after military exercises featuring Blackhawk helicopters were flown over the Miami skyline, the Florida Highway Patrol has informed the public that it will set up “vehicle inspection checkpoints” on specific roadways in at least six Florida counties that will be established during daytime hours.
State troopers will be requesting drivers licenses and conducting a visual inspection of every third vehicle once the checkpoint has been established.
So what’s the point of these random vehicle checks of every third car, you may ask? From the Tampa Bay Action News site:
Q: What are “vehicle inspection checkpoints”? Troopers aren’t mechanics, so why are they checking my car?
A: Per FHP, defective vehicle equipment, such as bad brakes, worn tires and defective lighting equipment, poses dangers to the public.
I find all this ‘military training’ over American cities more than a little disconcerting. I’m not of a conspiracy mind, but all this is mighty suspicious. I love my country, but I do NOT trust my government. I pray our military, and LEOs, remember their oaths!

Obama Orders Pay Raise for Biden, Members of Congress, Federal Workers
A pay raise, eh? While companies are laying people off, while citizens are doing their best to make ends meet, feed their children, make sure they have shoes on their feet, trying to keep a roof over their heads, putting off buying that new refrigerator, or car that needs to be replaced, the POS occupying the White House decides he has the authority to take more of our money to pay people who do very little to earn it, as we prepare to splat on the bottom of the ‘fiscal cliff’. Is it just me, or does anyone else see a MAJOR problem here???
Not a damn one of the them should EVER make more than lowest rank is paid in the U.S. Military. At least they EARN their pay!

A Must Read
If you really do care what is happening in the this country, if you are watching the destruction of a once great nation unfold on the nightly news, then you might want to take a few minutes and read this commentary. Is it time for a Second Revolution? If we continue on this path of self destruction, I honestly don’t see any other way for us to survive.
We’ve tried to elect savvy business people, who are more than aware we can no longer support the current level of spending in this country. We have been thwarted time, and time again. Elections are stolen, by cheats, liars, and thieves….also known as the Democrat Party>liberal>progressive>socialist>communist.
Facts don’t seem to matter to some people. The truth is irrelevant. But many of us still believe in the Idea of America, and would prefer not to see her destruction by failed policies, corrupt politicians, and an over bloated government that ignores the U.S. Constitution….a simple four page document that made this country the envy of so many around the world.
We’ve seen the downfall coming for many years, and had hoped to stem the tide. Unfortunately, for the last 3 1/2 years, the destruction has been shifted into overdrive, and many are too blind, or just to plain ignorant to realize they are contributing to the end of the nation.
For the sake of our children, grandchildren, and all future generations, we MUST make a dramatic change! We MUST bring back the documents of our Founders! We have no choice. We will either return to a free nation, founded on Judeo-Christian values, or allow the hatred of the left to destroy us. For me, the choice is quite simple.

Our Anti-Constitutional Government
While trying to clean out some out of date drafts in my behind the scenes blog stuff, I came across this post, dated 16 June. Why I never hit publish, I have NO clue, but considering the circumstances at the time, I suppose it’s understandable. So, I’m going to hit publish now. If a few things are out of date, so be it. We’re still screwed either way if we continue on the path that we’re being dragged.
I’m fairly sure that most thinking people have noticed we no longer have a Constitutional Republic. They haven’t exactly completely done away with the Constitution, but what’s the point of having one, if those who are sworn to uphold it are constantly violating that oath? We might as well just go ahead and say it….our elected officials are following the tenets of Karl Marx. We have a president who rules by executive order, ignoring the will of the people. We have a Congress that passes bill after bill, that go no where, because we have a Senate led by the most incompetent boob known to man, who won’t allow any bills put forth by the House controlled by the ‘opposing party’.
1. Abolition of private property in land and application of all rents of land to public purpose.
Through the actions of the EPA, the Department of Land Management, and other unelected bureaucrats, we have pretty much lost the freedom to do what we wish with land we have bought and paid for with our hard earned money. A prime example would be the town of Tombstone, Arizona. After a devastating fire, torrential rain, and mud slides, they needed to repair the town’s municipal water supply. You know, that water that comes out of your tap when you turn a knob, or when you flush the toilet. Obama’s EPA has decided the town has to apply for a federal permit to make the necessary repairs. Seriously? Don’t the towns people pay the bills for this service….to the city? Why would an unelected federal bureaucracy have any say in the matter? In direct violation of the 10th Amendment, the EPA has decided they have control over who does what, where. Now they have decided if water runs through a ditch on your land, they own it. If it rains real hard, and you have water running through a gully, it is under their jurisdiction, and they have the right to prevent you from stopping the gully washer. I guess that means we can’t find a way to stop the flood that gathers in our front yard every time it rains, that has managed to kill the grass. If it rains, and creates what looks like a swamp, you don’t have the right to drain it, or prevent future flooding. Nowhere in the CWA does it state that the feds can confiscate, or regulate, what a person does with their own land to prevent erosion, or flooding. I’m sorry, but I can’t see my brother in law captaining a barge through our front yard.
2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
Have you read the tax laws? As of 2010, there were 71,684. The people who write this garbage don’t even understand it, yet we, as lay people, are suppose to follow their ‘rules’? If my memory serves, the previous Revenue Act of 1861 was a temporary measure to fund the War of Northern Aggression. The 16th Amendment was shoved down the throats of the American people, and here we are, 99 years later, with an ever increasing burden on We, The People, in direct violation of several sections of Article 1 of the U.S. Constitution. If you can think of something the government does NOT tax, please let me know, because wracking my brain trying to think of something, ANYTHING, that doesn’t have a tax attached to it, in some way, shape, or form, has caused a raging headache. Yes, they even tax the air we breath. Oh, they call it a fee, or a fine, or some such thing, applied to companies, which support another unelected federal bureaucracy, but it’s still a tax, no matter what they call it.
3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance.
It’s called the ‘death tax’. Evidently, the government doesn’t take into consideration that a family farm (or any family run business, for that matter) may have large assets on paper, but in reality, this is equipment, etc., that is used in production of the food we eat. No liberals, food does not just appear out of nowhere on your grocery store shelves. When the farmer dies, the family is taxed for him/her dying. Wait a minute, didn’t said farmer already pay taxes on his property, including the equipment he used to grow said crop, or animals? Isn’t this double taxation, and isn’t that unconstitutional? The family farm has become endangered BECAUSE of the ‘death tax’. The family has to sell off the assets, equipment, land, etc., to pay taxes just because the farmer had the audacity to up and die. Families aren’t allowed to pass on their gains from their hard work to their children. The government evidently believes it is entitled to the proceeds of someone else’s hard work.
4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
Do you have the audacity to oppose the actions of the federal government? Be prepared to forfeit any property you may have. Shoot, even if you are a major Obama supporter, but say something he, or his minions don’t like, there’s a chance you’d get your property stolen. Hey….they’re planning on stealing more of your income starting January 1, 2013, so what difference does it make if they take your home, your car, or anything else you paid LEGALLY earned money to acquire. Recent actions by the DoJ is a glaring example of just how corrupt, and anti Constitutional the government has become, especially under the Obama administration. In direct violation of the 4th Amendment, and probably some of the 5th Amendment, the Holder Department of ‘Justice’, no doubt, at the direction of the current resident in the White, has confiscated somewhere in the vicinity of 2.5 BILLION dollars worth of private property. The innocent have suffered at the hands of this regime, not just the guilty. If the guilty suffer, I don’t give a flip. Unless the way it was gone about was unconstitutional. THEN, I DO give a flip….many flips!
5. Centralization of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly.
The Federal Reserve has nothing to do with the federal government, yet it is a dot gov. It is privately owned by privately owned banks. The voting majority of the board is appointed by the POTUS. Why it has the power to regulate interest rates, etc., is beyond me. In Article 1, Section 8 it states: “To coin money, regulate the value thereof, and of foreign coin, and fix the standard of weights and measures;…“ I don’t see anything in the Constitution that gives authority to a group of private bankers to regulate diddly. I am far from an expert on the Fed, but from what I’ve read, and my small understanding, we have got an entity that is owned by private banks, that regulates, and basically OWNS the U.S. Treasury. How is this not a ‘national bank’, that has a monopoly?
6. Centralization of the means of communication and transportation in the hands of the state.
Think the Federal Communications Commission, whose purpose is to issue licenses for radio and/or television stations. Preventing the overlap of stations is a good thing, which on occasion, they have failed miserably. That ‘bleeding over’ is one of the more annoying things when you are traveling, trying to find a decent station on your vehicle’s radio. Giving unelected officials the authority to issue a license for your radio station if you don’t happen to agree with their agenda is a very dangerous power, and should NEVER have been given to a ‘central government’. The beloved Transportation Security Authority has made travel for everyone a total nightmare, but hey…they’re keeping us all safe, right? I mean, after all, when a 5 year old is groped by TSA agents, don’t you feel safer? Never mind those who actually WANT to blow up planes (aka Muslims) and murder innocent men, women, and children. When airports HAVE to apply to the inefficient federal agency to get rid of the inefficient federal agency so they can hire a private security firm, that is typically 100% MORE efficient, there is something really out of whack!
7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the state; the bringing into cultivation of waste lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
Two words…. General Motors! Then there is the numerous executive orders, including the one signed in March by the U.S.’s head Marxist, giving the POTUS the authority to take over any, or all, resources, in the the name of ‘national security’. Authority for this total takeover of all national resources is granted with nothing more than the writing of a single statement that claims these actions are necessary to “promote the national defense.” Uh…yeah….right.
8. Equal obligation of all to work. Establishment of Industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
It doesn’t look like it, with all the millions of people out of work, but with so many dependent on the government for their sustenance, there is an ‘army’ being created. An army of those who don’t want their ‘free ride’ to end, and will likely do whatever it takes to stay dependent. And while you’re at it, read Sec 5210 (page 496) of that fiasco called ObamaCare.
9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the population over the country.

What Urban and Regional Planners Do
Urban and regional planners develop plans and programs for the use of land. They use planning to create communities, accommodate growth, or revitalize physical facilities in towns, cities, counties, and metropolitan areas.
Interesting. Shouldn’t the people who actually LIVE in such areas plan what goes where? What about the people who actually OWN the land? Those who worked hard, made a decision, bought land, paid the bills, and all the taxes required….isn’t it up to them what will be done with their land? Not according to the numerous federal bureaucracies.
10. Free education for all children in government schools. Abolition of children’s factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, etc. etc.
Where to start!?! Ok, I have no problem that the ‘children’s factories’ were abolished. Kids should be kids, not worker bees. Considering the times back then, it was understandable why so many children went to work in factories. It was called ‘feeding the family’. Mom, dad, brothers and sisters were all needed to contribute so the family could have a roof over their heads, and food on the table. They didn’t live well, or long, for that matter. I don’t think many of us today could have survived in such conditions. The words ‘spoiled rotten’ come to mind.
Now, the ‘free education’, which isn’t free, has become what was intended….indoctrination centers. Glossing over true history, preaching fabrications like ‘global warming’, the theory of evolution, etc., as fact, and why the blazes can’t these kids read, write legibly, add, subtract, multiply and divide without a machine? Why aren’t they able to actually think? Why is rational thought, being able to work out a problem in their own heads, no longer required? Kids parrot what their teachers tell them, and seem incapable of disputing the ‘facts’.

If you ran a business with $25 billion in losses over the last five years, $20 billion in annual losses projected in the coming years, and 80 percent of its locations losing money, do you think that your company would stay afloat? Should it be rescued with a bailout from its customers? Or should it change its business model, eliminate expenses, and innovate to be competitive in the marketplace? These are the questions facing Congress as it considers what to do about the ever-struggling United States Postal Service (USPS).
The USPS is indeed at a crisis point. Barring an intervention from Congress by May 15, USPS plans to start closing as many as 3,700 post offices. Those numbers might sound jarring, but in reality the post office closures (not including the processing centers) only save $200 million under USPS’s estimates, and only 4,500 employees would be “affected” — though many of them would be reassigned rather than let go. Of all the many complaints about airport security and the TSA, one of the most common is that they make little distinction between plausible security threats and passengers unlikely to be doing anything wrong.
And a recent incident in Wichita, Kansas has reinforced that argument, as a four-year-old girl was apparently subjected to a humiliating ordeal after she hugged her grandmother while she was waiting in line.
The girl was accused of having a gun and declared a ‘high security threat’, while agents threatened to shut down the whole airport if she could not be calmed down.
When asked about the overbearing treatment the girl received, a TSA spokesman did not apologise and insisted that correct procedures had been followed.
Haven’t we let this utter………………..BULLSHIT to go on long enough? This has gone far beyond bad jokes. Our government is ALLOWING one of ITS agencies to terrorize old women, children, the infirm, and people just trying to get from point A to point B with as little hassle as possible.
It wasn’t bad enough that airlines no longer give actual service to their customers, who PAY for the privilege of having rude ticket agents abuse them, be crammed into tiny seats with no leg room like cattle, and have their property stolen. No…that wasn’t enough. Now we are subjected to humiliation, a total violation of our 4th Amendment rights, and small children are traumatized.
Instead of watching for those who WOULD do harm, because their so called ‘religion’ tells them to, this government agency runs roughshod over innocent American citizens!
I would like to know when Congress is going to put a stop to this. NOW would be a real good time. It should NEVER have gone this far! We have been stripped of our liberties, one at a time, slowly over the years, and no one seems to notice. The frog was put into the cold water. Now, apparently, that’s just not fast enough for OUR employees. No..they’ve turned the burner up, and the water is on the verge of boiling. It’s time for us frogs to jump!
Screw the politically correct. Shove that multiculturalism where the sun don’t shine, and take your diversity and choke on it! I don’t give a flying flip if I offend anyone or not! Man didn’t give me the right to be ‘secure in my person‘, God did. It’s man, in the form of far over reaching government, who has violated nearly every aspect of ‘Divine Law‘.
When will see passengers, or just the general public, lined up against the wall and shot, because they object to the invasion of their person.

For the past several years, it’s not been an uncommon sight in Anytown, USA, to drive down the street and see home after home for sale after going through foreclosure. They are the still-lingering hangover from the housing crash that began in 2007. Though the true cause of what burst America’s housing bubble is still debated, two of the culprits — housing finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — are still going strong even though both essentially failed in 2008 and are under government control. Economists and politicians alike are now pondering whether we need Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac at all and what would happen if they were eliminated altogether.
For several years prior to 2007, home prices went through the roof, but then they crashed through the basement. Since then, more than 2.3 million homeowners have faced foreclosure — an 81 percent increase over 2007. This all, of course, contributed to the Great Recession we’re still rebuilding from today. “Easy credit” is pointed to as the corrosive acid that ate away at the housing market’s foundation, and federal government-sponsored mortgage finance giants — the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac) — were there to supply it and help other lenders to do so.

In a speech yesterday in Elyria, Ohio — a small town just outside Cleveland sitting at the forks of the Black River — President Barack Obama delivered a politically charged speech in which he hearkened back to the country’s roots, saying that his opponents “don’t seem to remember how America was built.” In his view, taxpayers want their money spent in ways that will help further “the larger project we call America.” In other words, more spending and bigger government paid for with higher taxes.
In a city quite unlike Elyria, thousands of miles west, sprawling forth from the desert just east of Death Valley, officials from this federal government provided the latest example of what happens when the president’s philosophy succeeds — when layer upon layer of government grows so big that it begins to serve the interests of a ruling class, rather than the people from whom it derives its power. Two years ago in Las Vegas, the General Services Administration (GSA) — a little-known federal agency that helps manage other federal agencies — blew through $820,000 in taxpayer funds for a lavish, booze-fueled conference for 300 employees, complete with magic shows, margaritas, and a self-produced rap video making fun of the spending. (It’s worth mentioning that in 2009, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) asked White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel for help in encouraging government meetings to be held in Nevada.)
